Correct me if I am wrong (I obviously don't play it), but isn't FFXI on console with a monthly pay subscription?

There was a nice article on, gamasutra I believe, where they described through how much trouble they went developing their international deployment system and support, how much management they have to ensure quality, the length of pipeline due to console distribution, and not to mention that FFXI is actually a decent and well rounded game.

But the scope of its management is WAY WAY beyond what SOE could ever provide, even for EQ2.

On November 25, Smedley stated (on the forums) that, "Noone is working on an Xbox 360 or PS3 version of SWG (Or PS2, Xbox or PSP), nor is one on the drawing board.  Would that be cool someday? Sure... but it's not on our radar at all."

And a month or so later, Smedley admitted that they had been developing SWG for a console release but "those plans are currently on hold".  Or words very much to that effect.

You forgot to add the fact that Square can manage and run a game better than every other MMO developer in the world, on par with NCsoft and I guess Blizzard. FFXI just as many subscribers as WoW, every SoE game, EvE, DaoC, UO and DnDO combined. FFXI is huge in Asia, numbers bigger than L1 and L2, and has big numbers over here in the US.

I couldnt ever get into FFXI because of the heavy grind, but the game is basically perfect when it comes to the amount of bugs to class balance.

SWG is not going to console. If you had 1/2 a brain you would know the huge differences between coding enviroments. Bioware is also NOT making a version of SWG. Both of these facts are known.

This, however, does not change the fact that SWG is a pile of bantha poodo.

As per an official press release from Sony Online Entertainment:

"SOE will be creating a DC Comics game for the PC and next generation gaming platforms"

The press release was on June 17, 2005.  I site this as an example for why the NGE came out, as a way to simplify the game for a console port.  However, after the reaction to the NGE, I think SOE decided to scrap any console plans for SWG.  They probably decided that it would be easier to code a new game for both PC and consoles than it would be to change an existing game.

I do not know anything at all about coding, but if they are looking at DC Online to go to both PCs and consoles, I would assume that the "differences between coding enviroments" are not as huge as you stated.

They're not huge at all.  In fact, the games are initially developed on PCs (using custom SDKs and emulating environments), and then migrated (with little effort) into the console format for testing and mastering.  That has been happening for quite a while now, and was designed that way to streamline product development.  Titles release across most platforms at the same time.  The days of having to wait for your favorite game to come to your machine are pretty much gone because of this.

I played FFXI for a while. Not my type of game but it is really well put together and run. In my time there I never encountered a bug and the mini games like fishing were actuelly really in depth and fun.

Console was considered, that is public knowledge. However that was pre-cu.

The EQ games seem to be treated very differently by SOE, the forums there have mods and developers who actually talk with the players and discuss gameplay and changes, it seems a much more respectful relationship.  They do seem to have done some large combat changes, and there was something about a server merge that was implemented and not announced ahead of time, but their player base seems solid.
The SOE that runs the EQ games and the SOE that guts Galaxies on a daily basis just seems like two different companies.

At the very least they are two seperate (if occaisionally interchangable) development and management teams. And it shows.

I started playing EQ2 just after NGE hit, having put off going there as it looked, from the outside like yet more dwarves and dragons and hitting fings wif stcks.

I tried the "Trial Of The Isles" and it blew chunks on this machine, laggy as heck. But then I saw a copy heavily marked down in a games store, bought it, installed it (gawd, I'd forgotten how crummy SOE's distros are, lol) and after a few hours was ingame.

And I'm having a blast.  Without a word of a lie, it feels as fun as preCU SWG, nice character anims, combat queue, etc but it's got a UI that's customisable from here to eternity.

Over on the official SWG forums I'm getting tired of the "oh they're just doing $randomThing because that's in WoW" when it's also in EQ and EQ2, has been since before WoW got off the starters block and what's more likely? They're going to rip off somebody elses idea, or do the same thing as they were doing when they worked in the offices along the corridor at SOE?
