"Content is king" as the Ranger of Verant/Sigil has stated many times. Vanguard certainly seems to have a plethora of content & promises possible great amounts of fun. Let's just hope that besides offering a rewarding challenge that Sigil remembers that games are indeed supposed to be fun for the players & not just time-sinks. i disagree with the "entitlement" accusation mentioned in the article though. Doesn't Sigil want Vanguard fun for all players with an ability to progress, casual to professional, or are Sigil & SOE already specifically marketing for a certain player type?
Vanguard is already however seemingly following a similar path of Everquest, especially with this recent switch to SOE. Alone this isn't a reason to abandon a possible great potential game, but it does heed concern.
i applaud the innovations that Sigil seems to be trying to implement, but as a casual player i hope Sigil doesn't allow SOE persuasion to slant the games interaction with players too much.
Overall, too early to tell whether Sigil's alliance with SOE again will be positive or negative for Vanguard. Evidence of Everquest should be considered however & how SOE handles customer service. i still miss EQ, it was great fun but more because of the players than how SOE operated it.
Whereas i was certain i was going to purchase & play Vanguard now i'm reserved to await more information since the Sigil & SOE merger. Sure does seem SOE has many MMOs under it's belt now though. Goodluck with Sigil & SOE.
There's a simple solution to corpse runs: don't die. I think this was the intent of the devs...play smart, or pay a penalty.
Where's the fun in that? As much as I hate death penalties and corpse runs when I die in a game with a steep penalty, it also makes me feel that much better about myself when I LIVE.

I totally agree I wasn't saying that corpse runs were a bad thing. It is a way for people to play somewhat conservative and come up with stratigies to kill a certain mob.
I know everyone can remember... Pull, Mez, Wack, Heal, MEZ MEZ MEZ..

I was pretty hyped about this game a few months ago. Now Im more inclined to agree with your thoughts.

Well since 20% of MMO'ers equates to about 1.5 million people I am sure Sigil and Sony will have no problem with that.
The games not for every one, they already said that.
I have never played EQ or UO and have limited time for playing so I expect I will be playing Heroes Journey and not Vanguard. But that doesnt mean we should be slaiming the people who will play and enjoy this game.
The more successful games there are in the market the better it is for everyone as developers cna get funding for innovative games. So I hope Vanguard is a big success.
Originally posted by Zippy It really sounded if mmorpg.com reviewer was not a fan of Vanguard and had no intention of writing a positive review. She just could not find anything to complain about so instead she wrote a generic article with no new information or insights. More or less just going through the motions of writing an article. She could have just as easily written this article by reading a preview from 3-4 months ago. MMPORG.com always seems to have a bias against non pvp games and more hardcore pve games. This preview is no exception and a waste of space. If one is intrested in Vanguard E3 information there are close to 20 much better written and informative previews from other sites. If one wants better Vanguard information there are much better links contained in the thread below. http://www.vanguardsoh.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53263
And a good portion of the reviews you reference ARE written by Vanguard fanboi's, which I'd take with a dose of salt. Frankly I found the MMORPG preview informative and professionally neutral unlike some of the fan and fansite reference you've supplied there.

Those people all hate SOE enough to not want to play any game associated with them.
Vanguard, the new home for the MMO zealots and the inane ranters. Great you've sold me
Solo content: if that's what you want from an MMORPG why not buy Oblivion?
Time Sinks like excessive travel (20 minutes????) and corpse runs are there for the obsessives. They make the game less fun for everyone else. They'll also encourage bots, hacks, pre-made chars for real money.
There's also a hint that you will have to suffer kill/loot stealing and other griefing practises.
Graphics: while gameplay is king, I think everyone expects the graphic level to be raised by successive generations.
What may swing things one way or the other is the interface: how it looks, how easy it is to tweak, what it lets you do, etc.
Looks like it may well be a fantastic pve game, but I can't play a game without good pvp and you can tell that Vanguard pvp is a long way from being a priority.

I don't get it, but I am interested in understanding what your saying. Please elaborate, especially about how "time sinks" are for "obsessives" and how they encourage bots, hacks, etc.
I don't understand simply because mmorpgs that have been labelled time sinks have been enjoyed by many, many more players besides those you might label obsessive, including myself, and I have yet to learn about a bot or hack in Everquest (not saying there aren't any, but it has never been an issue in my years of playing).
Players cheated in Diablo II, and I couldn't consider that a time sink at all. People cheat to get the upper hand on other players. It happens because certain people suck, not because of the mechanics of a game. I think you're pointing the finger in the wrong place.

Corpse runs = game killer, suck, lame
SOE = poor CS, poor server managment, terrible comunication
This game will be great for the 20% of MMO'ers out there and the rest of us will just have to wait for the next WOW.
