Hi, what MMORPG sould I play if I want to escape the lvling treadmill? To specify the question: What game has non-repetitive, multi-stepped or openended quests or/and meaningful PvP?
Asheron's Call #2... I'm at lvl 15 only by quests. You can play the free 14 day trial to try it out (no credit card required). Check in the Asheron's Call 2 forum for link.

Guild war is not here yet, and I´ve tried AC2. Unfortenately, there is not very much meaningful PvP in AC2. I want to be able to fight for resources/towns/bases, and I want the task to be dependent on player skill too. Darkfall seems like an interesting game, but it got crappy graphics and is not out for a long time.
Can anyone tell if the PvP and the questsystem in Anarchy Online is fun? The notum towers seem kind a dull to fight for, I´d rather defend my home town or conquer towns. And is the PvP in AO partly dependent on player skill? What about the quests, are they repetitive (I agree, AC2 have fun quests).
Planetside might be something you looking for, It's fps in persistent world with elements of RPG. You fighting for bases, resources. I enjoyed it alot but unfortunately it gets old rather quick. Anyway if you after skill based MMOG this is the one to try.
Edit:
dont expect any quests there, it's more fps than RPG.
I dont think MMORPG with features described by you even exist, we can only wish for one to be made .
============================== And besides, like it or not, people do try to "win" massively multiplayer RPGs. The rules of engagement are something like this: * If there is a status bar, make it grow bigger * If there is a number, make it higher * If it moves, either get a mission from it or kill it

AO's mission system (quests) is highly-addictive, but also highly repetitive. You will do the same things over and over and over. AO defines a treadmill...it's one of the worst MMOGs if you're trying to escape the level treadmill.
I can't comment much about PvP as I dont do PvP. The Notum Wars are what people who like to PvP seem to do in AO. Every day you'll hear messages about bases being won and lost between the rebel Clans and Omni-Tek Corporation. I don't know if it's much fun, or if player skill really figures into it, but since it's a free download and 7-day trial it can't hurt to try.
Since I only play with ED-glasses (3D shutterglasses), Planetside isn´t ofr me (see the ad on this site). And bye the way, I just downloaded the AO free trial...
Shadowbane... You level ridiculously fast in that game. And the PvP is designed to be battling over cities and whatnot. I was able to take a character from 1st level to 20th level in a few hours.
Be warned though, it is a PKfest, need to get into a guild quickly after reaching level 20 and leaving the newbie area.
I can agree to that. I loved the PVP in Shadowbane. It had me hooked for over 6 months! But as mentioned, Shadowbane is definently not for the weak hearted; you will get PKed on a daily basis (and geting 10X the kills once you master the game! )]
I played SB for about 6 months. (the shortest amount of time I've ever played any game that could be played over a network).
I was PKed about 4 times total. But by PKed I mean, I was soloing or in a low level group killing mobs and someone popped out of no where and mowed us all down. I was killed allot in group vs group type conflicts.
Maybe it's a little different now? but I thought PKing wasn't excessive, but it does happen. Certianly not weak hearted.
I only stoped playing SB due to the lack of content. PvP is fun, but varity is good. Doing to much of the same thing gets boaring over time.

Try EVE, if you don't mind SF/space combat. No such thing as a leveling treadmill, though, like any game, it's not completely free of repetitive activity. Still, there are enough choices of things to do that you should be able to find a corp which fits your desired playstyle. If you like PvP, I would be surprised if you could find a MMORPG better suited for you than EVE. It does have its problems--a slow start being the primary one--but can be great fun if you get in with a good group of people.
THere is currently no way to escape the mmo tread mill. Trust me, I've played just about every mmorpg I could get my grubby hands on, it just doesn't happen.
AC2- Good quest system, gets teddious running the same quests over and over again, plus it boaring as *&^% hanging out in a world with a population of maybe 400 on a good day.
Shadowbane- Quite symply the worst interface in a mmorpg to date, talk about lame music and horrable sound effects. Blah, Yeah shadowbane's great if you don't mind aweful in all the area's besides pvp.
My suggestion, wait for world of warcraft to come out. Blizzards focus on making the game is to eleminate the GRIND of leveling. Normaly if a company pointed this out as a mission statement I would be sceptical, but with games like Blackthorn, Diablo 1 and 2, and the Tremendous Warcraft and Starcraft serries, you can believe what these guys say.
