Not even close to 6 million people play WoW, nowhere NEAR it. People often make the mistake of saying "WoW R t3h best game 6 million subscribers!!111 omfgbbq"
Whatcha gotta understand is that 6 million people have "TRIED" WoW. There was a post some months back showing us the satistics of how this was caculated. 6 million people have tried WoW, this includes china, and you know how overpopulated china is.
... they didn't make a chinese WoW, it would be funny if they did Um, what? There are 4-4.5 million WoW subscribers in china. Although I am unsure as to whether that is comparable to the commitment entailed by a western subscriber. The game is run and licensed to The9 a chinese company. Blizzard gets some percetnage of their profits.
No, your the one that doesn't know anything about business. First of all Guild Wars isn't an mmorpg, period. Second of all do you even know how much it costs to maintain the servers? What about customer service? How about server maintenance? And the developers that constantly add content? Do you think they would work for free? If you can't handle it, get a frikkin job.
Well, first off, they wouldnt make as much money. Second, 6 million people have been more than willing to pay 50$ up front, then 15$ a month so why would blizzard say "no thanks guys, keep your money, where here for the fun of it." And considering the fact that Blizzard does do a pretty good job at adding content for free, I think its reasonable asking price.
But I do see your point, personally, I think it should be reverse. I think we should be able to download the game for free, then pay a monthly fee, first month up front. That would be profitable in the long run since people would be more inclined to pay 15$ a month for a game, pay 30$ for expansions, rather than 50$ up front, then 30$ for expansions, and a monthly free on top of that.
For each million of customer that subscribe, they made $15 millions per month.
I don't see why someone would want to lose those benefits.
Saddly raiding is going to hurt them, if they think raiding hurt Blizzard yet, it is because they didn't see what is to come out of it yet, it is...exponential.

Yes, because we all know new raids with the same but retextured map is "new content". Oh yeah, and now I can view the armor before I buy it! These guys have gone a long way!
"Time.." I chuckled "I hold no secret to time, though it's mystery puzzles me. Deny it's existence and lie to myself not with hopes of a quickened pace."
Blizzard will never make WoW free. This is due to what someone posted earlier - 6 Million ACTIVE subscribers paying 14.95/month which is a lot of friggin money and since Bill Roper left the company has joined th Vivendi band wagon on hoarding cash (sure miss Roper).
Making the game free would also hurt the game as they would be less inclined to update it as it would be expensive (The game is not as simple as StarCraft and Diablo 2) and the operation costs probably would be just astounding - I personally would like to see that monthly bill.
And also just to throw out, Guild Warsi a MMO game... what is an MMO a Massive Multiplayer Online Game, with what 1 million players would make it massive. Diablo 2 could be considered a MMO since it has 50,000 people daily. Don't tack on paying as what an MMO is... and MMO is what it plainly says...a lot of people playing all at once.
If everyone would get off welfare then paying $50 to buy and $15 a month isnt a problem.
And the subscription plans in most of the Asian countries are different than standard US / Europe / Aussie ones. They dont pay per month. They pay per use, internet cafe style.
Originally posted by SLNTASN hmm, 6million players x 15 dollars a month = 90000000000 (approx) Would you be willing to give that much money up a month?..... no therefore: your question is one of the many actual "dumb questions"

Clicky Above is an article for the two of you, explaining both how Blizzard calculates subscriptions and what's the likely annual revenue from the game.
Ico Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
your an idiot and prolly like 8 or sumthing cause you hide your age. They cant make it free or else how would they pay for everything to keep the game running and to pay the developers. Making it free would be like u having a job working 5+hours a day and never getting paid.
It sould be free more pp would play thats y im not goin to by it, its a waste of money i bogut the gaem now i have to pay to play!
Whenever i step outside, somebody claims to see the light It seems to me that all of us have lost our patience. 'cause everyone thinks they're right, And nobody thinks that there just might Be more than one road to our final destination--

omg, 6 million people paying 15 bucks a month.... yeah their not short on money, so the could make it free and not have to worry about money, but corporate greed is a powerful thing.

geez kid....have you ever played an MMORPG before or know what one is? How in the world could a game as massive as WoW be free to play.....
Guild wars is free because its not as big as a REAL MMO, its all instanced....gee.....man......

Please! WoW free! Why would blizzard do that if they can suck in 15 bucks a month from 6 million suckers! I will die (or get a job) before i will pay that much a month for a game. mwuhahahaha. Well anyway WoW isn't a broke teenager's game. If ur broke try guildwars, yes its instanced but that brings out the true essence of skill in this game. u an ur guild are on their own out there. there is no "help please join us in this epic battle" thing which leaves room for cunning and strategy. Guild wars may not be an mmo but it is the counterstrike of online rpgs
Okay, you people do know that WOW isn't the only MMO with a monthly fee, right?
And that money is usually spent ( as stated before by others ) on Server cost, Employee's, etc.
You people act like blizzard is only like 3 people who have more money then Bill Gates.
And the monthly fee is only 15 a month. And you can buy 60 day game cards if you don't feel like paying that.
But the monthly payment isn't bad. I have a crappy paying job and can still come up with money for two online games and have a alot of money in my pocket.
