Guild Wars is Free but they are going to put out 2 expansions a year that are $50 each which is $100 a year... it's alot cheaper than MMORPGs but it is still isn't free.

Current MMO of interest: Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
MMO background: EQ, UO, AO, SWG, PS, EQ2, L2,EQoA, WoW, WWIIO, and AC2

Umm Blizzard doesn't keep all the money they make ... remember they are owned by Vivendi,  get a job $15 a month is nothing. Also this is a business there not trying to make friends here.

It actually isn't much cheaper.  100$ compared to roughly 168$ (with a 14$ monthly fee), so it's not a huge differance.

The whole "Guild wars is free!!! No monthly fees!" thing is just some gimmick that preys on people who don't see it as one.

I just read the whole thread here! I am trying to understand the logic in it?

Why would you make the most popular game out there for free? To be even more popular, why? More people will like it, why?

I went to school long enough and did a lot of math, so I am trying to see the point here!

6 millions (or whatever number they say) X 15$/month = 90$ millions/month to whoever get the money

                                                             VS

12 millions (or whatever number they say because now it is free to play) X 0$/month = 0$ millions/month

More people liking the game does not make money, so 50$ a game = 3 months of playing so they will start losing money.

    6 millions players X 15$/month X 12 months = 1 080 000 000$/year
    21,6 million players X 50$/game  X no monthly fee = 1 080 000 000$/year

As you can see with the actual player base, they will have to sell 21,6 million game copy a year to make the same amount of money.

So again, stop making stupid post like that, all real MMO out there as a monthly fee. Please spare my time telling me about Guild Wars or other free MMO. They are not in the same category and if your not happy go play Silkroad or even Guild Wars.

Well anyway WoW isn't a broke teenager's game. If ur broke try guildwars, yes its instanced but that brings out the true essence of skill in this game. u an ur guild are on their own out there. there is no "help please join us in this epic battle" thing which leaves room for cunning and strategy. Guild wars may not be an mmo but it is the counterstrike of online rpgs

That made me laugh, thanks buddy. Your talking about Epic Battle in GW. Do you know what EPIC BATTLE means, I see you never played L2 when over 200 player killed a Dragon or DAoC during a siege. How can you call a 4 players team having an Epic Battle.

Guild Wars is a much smaller game to maintain and has a much smaller playerbase.

Guild Wars has a higher rating than WoW in mmorpg site
    Guild Wars has 2m subscriptions.

Players who love grind would love WoW
Players who love simple combat mechanic would love WoW
Players who are less tatical/strategical adoptitive would love WoW
WoW are nothing but an eye-candles.

    Rating on MMORPG.com means nothing,
2m is a good deal less than 7m

    Everything is a grind
    True
WoW is one of the best for PvE strategy and tactics, though GW most definitely beats it in PvP
    eye-candles?

LMFAO... You use mmorpg.com rank list to say GW is better than WoW? Don't make me go spam all WoW servers to tell everyone there to come here and vote all 10's on WoW. That tells you right there how reliable mmorpg.com's ranking system is.

As for GW's 2m subscription numbers. HAHAHAHA ok, wait you are telling me you are comparing a F2P Online RPG to a $14.99 a month P2P MMORPG that has over 3 times the amount of players.

Now are you gong to tell me that if GW started to charge a monthly fee that their subcription base will go up? I dont' think so and BTW I bought GW when it first came out and since they DONT charge a monthly fee, how am I EVER going to be taken off their so called list of players, eventhough I haven't played since the first month of release? I would have to DESTROY my GW account to do that.

I don't think it is a good idea to compare a F2P game (GW) to a game that hit the highest subscription base in history (WoW). Lets see GW start charging even $9.99 a month and see how long it will last. I bet anything GW will sink faster than AC2.

For all you out there that whine about monthly fees. You pay more for your pop a month than you would for two subscriptions to any MMORPG.  Think about it. Most people spend 79 cents +tax a day for a 32 - 44 oz of Coke/Pepsi/Dr Pepper/Ice Tea and etc...Most people do this on a daily basis...on average you spend over 25 bucks a month on pop alone, this doesn't even include the candy or snack chips you buy as well. If you claim "I don't drink pop" Well, your damn Dasani water cost EVEN MORE!!!

Don't tell me you can't afford it or that it isn't worth it. The crap you shove in your face during the first f'ing 10 minutes of a gaming session cost more than 2 (two) days of game play.

As for why WoW cost and GW doesn't is due to mainly that GW servers don't host the adventure areas where all the action happens. All they do is host the player data, chat system and town instances. No major bandwidth there being used and it doesn't take a top end system to run it either. When you are out and about in the world. Then the one with the best connection to the group is hosting it...That is one reason why GW doesn't have raid parties. Your damn system and most internet connections can't handle it, unless you were at a job where your boss didn't mind you using the server clean room and the OC 48 line to host a raid party.

As for WoW and other MMORPG's. They handle all of that and all you do is receive and send data so everyone knows where you are and what you are doing as with the data you receive tells you the same of your group/raid and etc.. Who is handling all this? The servers that are at Blizzards clean rooms for WoW.

That is the most basic laymens terms I can use to explain this. However if you were to have GW's handle it's worlds like most other MMORPG's do then it would be costing them major bucks and you would have to pay more money to keep everything going. Otherwise ArenaNet/UBISoft would be shutting down GW to stop a high mantanence gameworld.

If any MMORPG out there should stop charging, it should be DDO since it is much like GW in how it handles the instances. Turbine won't say it upfront, but you can tell sometimes  just from the network usage that the instances are not hosted by Turbine, but from one of the party members itself. Which if I am correct, there is a leakage that turbine is considering DDO to go F2P by this Christmas.

However, WoW to go F2P. Why should they? They aren't having any problems with subscription fees. All other MMORPG's out there will be the ones to turn F2P way before WoW ever will, which I don't see they happening anytime soon either.

Just because in your selfish thoughts of wanting to play WOW and not wanting to pay for it. Isn't going to make Blizzard stop charging. Their selffishness is a LOT stronger than yours so I doubt they will ever give in to a non-subscribers whims, especially when they don't give into 50%+ of the whims of their current subscriber base that want things new or different.
