Originally posted by arkimas It's Awful. The game is buggy - more so than any I have seen. It is incomplete, the world is VASTLY empty of monsters or items. Like walking through a painting. The customer service is NON EXISTANT. When you DO get a response you are treated like dirt. Like a criminal instead of a customer. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.
This is exactly what thousands of people on other game forums have said, so I will definatley not buy it. I betatested it and I couldn't even play it because this game needed to start from internet explorer but it didn't work.
Ok, so I am back. I have Horizons, I bought it back in December, but I only played for the 1st 30 days and then cancelled. To me the game felt imcomplete and lacking in certain features that every mmorpg should have. I am back to check it out again.
So far I have found that things are not too different than when I left, but I am having some fun creating new characters and exploring new places, and crafting, which to me was always a lot of fun.
One thing that really burnt me out the first time around was the grind to catch up with guildmates. We were all struggling to build a town, and as a fledgling blacksmith I had to work hard at getting better skills so I could contribute. I am not a powergamer, I don't have all that much time to play each day, so I fell behind. This is no fault of the game, but a big reason why I got frustrated with it.
The games graphics and music are nice. I am currently playing the Everquest free 30 day trial for downloading the EQ Trilogy. I am comparing Horizons to Everquest first-hand simultaneously, and what I can say as a first impression is that Horizons looks so much better and sounds great (I love the soundtrack) but Everquest is filled with content and Horizons is not, yet.
Also, Horizons crafting has always been a very strong part of the game in my opinion, the only problem is that crafters are beginning to lose customers . . . adventurers are scarce it seems and without them, who will buy a crafters wares?
Perhaps if there were less sharads to concentrate more of the players, it would be better. Right now, after trying 3 different shards in Horizons, there are not many players around on any of them . . .
In Everquest, at least in the trial server you get assigned to, there are many players, but this is an unfair comparison because this server is the only one that the new trial players can play. In Horizons, a trial player can pick which server to play on, again, spreading the players out more thinly.
Socialization is a big thing for me in a mmorpg and it seems Horizons is still a bit lacking, but I attribute this to what I just mentioned above, the lack of a more dense, populated server.
I like the combat system in Horizons, it's not better or worse than Everquests. I do like the death penalties of Everquest better, though. I don't like a system that doesn't punish you for dying. Combat should feel intense and you should feel a sense of danger when fighting. In Horizons, I don't really feel that way do to the very soft penatly. In Everquest, it gets pretty frantic, and I remember screaming at the mob on my screen when battles became too close for comfort.
I really like the idea of The Blight and how the landscape changes as you approach it.
Any mmorpg should have plenty of emotes and way to express your character for roleplaying, but sadly Horizons has very few. When I first played, there were not many roleplayers I met, and I figured it just wans't a RP friendly type of game. I am trying out the Expanse server tonight to see if I can try and prove that wrong . . . I rarely, if ever, have any luck finding roleplayers in Everquest, not since the early days have I come in contact with one.
When I began playing Horizons the first time, it seemed alittle difficult. This time around I am picking it up more quickly, partly because I remember things and also because I am exploring it a bit more this time.
I think Horizons still has some potential, but I am not sure yet if I will resubscribe after the trial is up.
Comparing Horizons to EQ.......ok but just remember Horizons is supposed to be a 3rd generation MMO and if EQ is better in any respec it is a falling in horizons.
Of course the graphice and sound is better if it wasnt the game would not have gotten a publisher.
EQ is a old mmo.....which people still play...that says something, but comparing EQ to horizons, horizons should have won in evry regard, but it didnt thats says ALOT.
Even tho it isnt truly fair to compare such a old mmo to what was supposed to be a 3rd gen cutting edge mmo, the fact that EQ was bttr in sum regards shows how poorly Horizons was developed.
Very well said and I agree, however, Horizons does have features that Everquest is missing. So it does improve on some aspects, but what I have seen so far is that it doesn't really go above and beyond in some other areas (besides graphics) like I was expecting.
Horizons is not a bad mmorpg, I think. I could have fun playing it for a while, but as I compare it to others, I am really finding that it could have, and probably should have been so much better. That is really too bad.
Still, I bought it and gave it a try, and now I am back again trying it. It's got potential, I hope it improves.
I like the game. It does have a sort of incomplete feeling to it, but that doesn't make it a horrible game. Some of the features and such are intuitive and neat. For instance the map system is nice which allows you to set waypoints and custimize them. I like the custimization available with creating windows for any purpose you may like. You can create emotes, almost like a mini script for actions. For instance I could set up a action tab that would target nearest enemy, attack, wait 3 seconds, switch weapons, wait 3 seconds, do special move wait 3 seconds, target nearest creature, etc. So, theoretically I wouldn't even have to be around and my person would just repeatedly attack and take care of itself. Anyways, its not very fun that way, but it does give you some useful functions at your fingertips.
The graphics are wonderful. Probably some of the best graphics I've seen for a MMORPG. The crafting system is the best to date and combat is fun and engaging. The world is vast and has many different climates and scenary.
One thing for sure I would like to have more of are quests. I think in that department, Horizons could definately improve. There are quest, but not enough in my opinion. I would like quest that will give you XP in your adventure and/or crafting levels. There should also be more quest that are epic in scope and that really benefit you or the world of Istaria in some special way. I know there are a few great quest now, but there should be more.
All in all, I've enjoyed the game and will probably play it until something better is released or atleast what I perceive to be better.
I also have played a few MMORPG (AC1, AC2, EQ, E&B, AO, JG, DAOC, EvE, etc.). I went thru the whole beta for HZ and hung in there for almost 6 months as my wife liked it for some reason. While this game had great concepts, the horrible execution, customer service and management have made it a true bottom feeder of a game. I have seen worse, but they were usually free games run on a computer in someone's garage.
The crafting is fair to good, community has some nice folks (like any other), everything else is horrid. The way you can tell Artifact Entertainment is lying is: their lips are moving. Bowman need to burn in hell along with the latest game he has helped ruin. When folks talk about bad customer service, they just have not seen bottom unless they have played AE's Horizons. Of course, they just fired their whole customer facing team without replacing them a few weeks ago. Even game addicts like me are not stupid enough to keep pumping money into this looser. I look forward to their impending bankruptcy.
PS - Just in case you cannot tell, I am not a Horizon's fan.
This game is boring and stupid, look at the reviews- gamerankings(total count of all reviews) below 67 percent. PC Gamer gave it a 56/100 and CGW gave it a 2 out of 5.
I've been playing this game since january. I've found it to be a pretty good game, but like all others it does has it share of bugs. I agree that support is most likely worse then any other game. I also play since January, and had nothing but great experience. Alot has changed since launch, and more will come.
I had a lot of interaction with support and it was always really good. The only thing they need to add is in game support. There is a WM which can be contacted in-game, but there is no easy method of doing so. Apart from that it's really good, and I'd suggest you try this game to see for yourself.

The voice of experience, eh, _Unicron_?
The adventure is in the journey itself.
