News Flash:
Today Blizzard Entertainment announced that they are pulling the plug on their enormously successful cooperative online game World of Warcraft. There was no apparent reason for the pullout other than a lack of interest in continuing the project from the developers. They regret having to do this to their loyal players and apologize for the hasty notice.
Okay, so let's pretend that's true for just a few minutes. Blizzard shuts down World of Warcraft.
What do you think would happen to the MMORPG genre after that? You can be specific about a certain game or games if you like, or just the genre as a whole. I'm just curious what you guys think would happen after all those players don't have a home anymore.
Would other games grow?
Would other games try to appeal to the old WoW players by acting like WoW did?
Would other games try to be different than WoW was?
Would other games go back to being like they did before?
??????
Whatever you think would be the biggest noticable outcome, tell us.

Let's pretend the sun stops shining tomorrow. Would that lead to a decline in skin cancer?

Erkennst du mich
Ganz tief in meinem Herz
ist noch ein Platz f?r dich
Ich suche dich
Ich sehne mich
nach dem was ich geliebt hab
doch ich find es nicht
They are gonna pull the plug on a game that makes more per month than most games make the entire time they are released.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
But anyway, I would suspect that 50% of the WoW crowd just stops playing MMOs.
Then EQII and FFXI would take huge numbers.
Then the rest would scatter throughout the rest of the MMOs that are out there.
A Work in Progress.

Actually WoW causes skin Cancer, not the Sun.. or was that Wow causes LACK of skin cancer... hmm i can't reember...
at least i will have good dreams tonight, a world without WoW maybe the MMO world would go back to being NON-mainstream..
AH the good old days...
before we found out there were 5million people like us in the world.. how depressing...
Well if Blizzard shut down WoW all the other games would run a party event and then get flooded by 10 year olds that just lost their greatest hobby since watching Cartoon Network
I left Wow for 2 reasons
1. The Average age seemed to be preschool
2. I dont want to pay giant fees to do me real life job as Youth Worker online
1. Join a guild with a strict "age/maturity" policy
2. WoW is one of the least expensive mmorpgs on the market.

How do you figure? The key is still $40-50 and its $15 a month after 2 years.

WoW isn't a bad game, the number of subscribers proves that, it's just that it is aimed at players who want maximum reward for minimum effort.
I for one hope WoW continues forever.
Not because I like it ..... I don't. I find the PvE bland and their idea of PvP is a pathetic joke.
I hope WoW continues forever so that the millions of immature and weak minded people who flood the game at the weekends will stay away from everything else.
If you like WoW then play it. What does it matter what other people think ?
If you don't like WoW then don't play it.
Enjoy
May I suggest to Hire a complaint against thier action on pulling WoW..!!
Just think of the money and time we spend playing this game..!!
If this will really happen,I would not think twice of not buying a Guildwars and Guildwars Faction Installer..!!
Auntie pls.. buy me those WoW is gone..WWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAA
People would just flock to other MMOs,simple as. An increase in population of other MMOs. Just like any other big P2P game that crashes.
Most ppl I talked to about other mmo while I played wow was interested in CoH / CoV if they would ever try anything else. I quit wow couse it just got down to same old, same old... tried CoV and got the booring wow feeling after about 30 min.. made 8 chars for fun to get different looks then gave up on that game to.. Sooo tired of grinding XP, gear or whatever... Grind FTL,, think Im just gonna enjoy the sun outside for a couple of weeks.
If it was to happen... I would expect about a third of them would stop playing mmos and move back to console games or FPS online games.
I would expect about another third would move to probably a dozen free online WoW emulators that would almost immediately pop up, heh.
And the other third of them would flood the other games out there... EQ2, DAoC, Guild Wars, and Lineage 2 would probably all see a HUGE increase in their subsriber bases. Other less mainstream games like SoR and Eve Online would see a few thousand more newbs come in, curious of other worlds.
Oh, and Blizzard would immediately become a laughing stock and the butt of millions of jokes for being soo damn stupid to pull a plug on about 100 million dollars flowing in per month! No doubt.
For what it matters, that would be my prediction.

He didn't say it was really cheap, he said it was one of the least expensive MMORPGs compared to the other MMORPGs. Take a look at EQ2, CoH/CoV, DAoC, FFXI and so on - their prices are the same if not slightly more than WoWs.

EQ2 is $20, you can get KoS and EQ2 for $30 and its $15 a month. CoH/V are $30 each $15 a month, you can get DaoC and every expansion for $20, FFXI is like $30 for the game and all 3 expansions, and only $12 a month. What exactly are you guys trying to get at here? That WoW hasnt pulled out any expansions yet?
