I am a Ryzom player who has been playing the game two years and still love it loads (can't imagine myself stopping any time soon).
However, I think that Ryzom is a good enough game to stand on it's own merits. I have not played WoW personally, but I do have friends who enjoy it. The game is decent, it wouldn't be so popular if it wasn't. I don't think it does either game any good to say "this game rocks, and this game sucks" in any situation tbh.
There is currently a large flood of new players coming to Ryzom, and with the recent and soon to come additions to the game, I can only see this continuing for now. However, that doesn't mean its the game of choice for everyone. One person enjoys Marmite, while others hate it, its a fact of life.
Of course Ryzom has been under the radar for a long time and is now only coming to the surface of being known by many people, where as WoW is known even to many non-MMO players. As a result WoW brings many players to the genre, and imo this has probably helped Ryzom more than hindered it.
No disrespect to the origional poster, as I agree with many of your threads, but I doubt that this thread will acomplish your origional aim of helping to promote Ryzom.
Sorry Zaxx, but at the moment you start ranting as if all players of WoW are retarded, you pretty much lost the argument. Its too cheap too dismiss people with other opinions as stupid.
I've tried Ryzom as well, and while it was fun for me for a few hours, I can't imagine that it would keep me interested for long. The only thing that I truly enjoyed about the game were the creatures that seemed to have a personality.
The crafting, which is seen as Ryzoms strongest point, didn't interest me at all. Especially the gathering just felt tedious and weird. Funny enoug, WoW, a game thats always criticized for its weak crafting did that part better. In Ryzom there seems to be no logic about where materials are located. You can find some cloth or iron at exactly the same spot, which makes no sense at all too me.
At least in WoW materials are found at logical places. There are herbs that only grow near rivers or in grassy fields, ores are found on the sides of hills and mountains, etc.
Not quite right, firstly there is no iron on Atys And secondly, specific Matereials do grow only in specific areas.
But, hey, there are as many oppinions out there as there are players, it´s a completely useless point to argue about, wich Game is best. It´s just like in old Hon-Kon-Movies: "My KungFu is better then your KungFu." We all laugh about that. Why do we argue about Games????

I have no paticular wish to promote Ryzoom or disrespect WoW.
Both are very good games.
Just Ryzoom happens to be an Underdog - because its never had as much invested in advertisement , it never had as previosly loyal player base as Warcraft , and finaly it never had as much money as resorces invested in its development ... All this things make WoW so great
But Underdog Ryzoom is slowly but bravely rising up , thanks to its great community and steady quality..
And this just brings smile to my face...

I agree, you would think though with WOW having almost 2000 more votes than EVE it could hold onto the top slots much longer. Too bad we dont have charts to show how people voted like the charts for movies on imdb.com.

Yeah the votes would count for alot more if people could see a break down of the votes. If it was all pretty close but **** game had better ratings then the vote would mean something. If it was 5 or 10% of the votes where in the 7-9 range and the other 5000 where 10s and 1s you could tell that vote was bs.

WoW fell out from the highest ranked MMO list while Ryzoom climbed to third place !!!
MMORPG users you really did it this time
While WOW is probably the best done MMO until now - its fast food fun attitude and community is the reason no serious MMO player would ever back it up
On the other hand Ryzoom is beutiful game with superb community but with serious lack of content ... but the dedication of its players is starting to show - they are actually making more and more people go Ryzoom
And it is definetly a good choice
You are both right and wrong. WoW on its own, all by itself, has introduced 3-6 MILLION players to mmorpgs. (Even though WiW currently has roughly 3 million playing at the same time, roughly 6 million total have checked it out counting the turnover rate, or as you say "fast food fun".) Those players would NEVER have checked out mmorpgs if not for WoW. Many, many, of those players then check out other mmorpgs and get further hooked.

Sorry, mis-understand there. All I meant by what I stated is that WoW is made for the masses and to do that, it is such a damn simple and shallow game that yes.. even a retarded child could pick it up and excel at it. Just because you play WoW doesn't mean that you are retarded and that is not at all what I meant.
WoW is a good game. And for what it is made for and intended for, WoW is a great game. But for all the WoW fans to come on here constantly whining that WoW should be rated at the best mmorpg and that because it isn't that the rating system is flawed is plain out silly... and it is getting old.
WoW is NOT the best mmorpg. Not at all. Because it is the most popular game doesn't mean that it is the best. I really don't understand the simple logic that thinks that just because something is the most popular, it is the best. I guess perhaps it boils down to loving a really simple game = having really simple logic. I dunno.
Originally posted by Gameloading The ratings have and never will be about quality. only about hype. a big part of Ryzom is free now, and hey, for free, its pretty nice game. The saga of ryzom is pretty deep, but Ryzom also proves that depth doesn't always mean its fun. Ryzom is, imo, a very, very, VERY boring game. World of Warcraft beats The saga of Ryzom any day.
Ryzom is boring eh? To who? To you who thinks that you must be able to advance atleast 5 levels per day or it's "boring"? Perhaps some players prefer content and the actual quality of gameplay over how fast you can level up. I can understand how you could percieve it as boring. You probably also think that camping and talking a walk is also boring... 'cuz if you aren't driving a car at 85 mph.. my god is it boring, huh? - Zaxx
Ryzom is boring to me. Ryzom is boring to most of the members of Infinity (the games largest guild who moved to another game) who just couldn't take the lack of content updates. Ryzom is boring to 1000's of players who just don't buy into the idea that sitting in a group harvesting is content. Ryzom is boring to a lot of people.
I'm tired of hearing how much better Ryzom is than other games. The truth is that it offers so much less than other games. It has no questing sytem. The raid feature that was advertised long ago is no longer used. The storyline that Ryzom is supposed to be about hasn't been moving forward (the goo, Kami, Karavan, and Kitin all remain in the same place as they did when the game was launched). The encylopedia is forgotten.
WoW is better than Ryzom. It offers more to do. It's more polished. It has music and better character animations. The game world is larger. And no, I don't play WoW. I don't even like WoW.
As for the user ratings on this site. They are pretty worthless. If you want an accurate view of the ratings system, look at the mmorpg editors ratings. Wow is 8.1, SOR 7.8.

The problem is that WoW is constantly bashed because its popular. There are a lot of people around that say that the game is popular, so it must suck. That logic is just as flawed as saying that its the best because its popular.
One thing I have to note is that I don't play WoW anymore. The game was a great experience for months for me though. At the same time, I played the games that were rated higher as well. i still havent seen anyone say that. i have seen lots of people say that wow community sucks, that the game is as deep as a piece of paper, that end-game is crappy, that pvp is meaningless, that crafting items are worse than looted items, that the game world is static, that there is no player politics or economy, and that 6 million players mean nothing.
still, i didn see anybody say that wow is a bad game because it is popular. more like wow is a bad game in spite of its 6 million players.

For some people, that is a strength, not a weakness. As a questless game, Ryzom is conducive to real content in the form of events that have actual impact and player-driven content.
"The raid feature that was advertised long ago is no longer used."
It is used, just not often.
"The storyline that Ryzom is supposed to be about hasn't been moving forward (the goo, Kami, Karavan, and Kitin all remain in the same place as they did when the game was launched)."
100% false. There are many events that are moving the story forward. Slowly, maybe, but that's because there are many ongoing subplots. The Kami and Karavan storyline is most obviously progressed, both in major events like Episode 2, and political shifts driven by the players themselves, especially via outposts. On the subject of factions, racial tensions also exist on some levels. On the subject of races, the Tryker governor was assassinated (at an event with ties to several others before and after) and the Trykers held an election in which players voted and the outcome was different on each server. There are also things happening related to the Goo, such as the invention of the Goo-based weapon that killed the Tryker governor. And what about the Marauders, and the Matoxia they mentioned? Might Matoxia be related to the Goo? Is it Goo/Matoxia that was used by rogue homins to control a kitin? What is the Black Circle tribe up to (who study the Goo in hope of linking it to magic to attain greater power, and have ties to the assassin who used the Goo weapon to kill the Tryker governor)? As for the Kitin...what happened to the group of homins sent by Elias Tryton into the Deep Roots? They observed highly intelligent kitins, and eventually no more reports came back from them.

To this day it is unknown who the homis are. Where they come from. There has been no advancement as to who the Kami are or who the KAravan are. The black circle have been studying goo since launch so you loose that arguement. There still is no answer as to what the goo really is. There has been no advancement as to what the Kitin really are. There has been no advancement as to what Atys really is. There has been no advancement as to any of the other areas of Atys (the other 95%). There has been no advancement as to the any of the other planets that are supposed to exist. There has been no advancement in the question of why homins aren't allowed into the deep roots. There has been no advancement as to the dragon and what it is. There has been no advancement as to the parts of the roots that look like machinery.
Virturally every question that was a launch is still in the same state it was at launch. Virtually every storyline aspect that was setup at launch is the same as it was at lauch. The things you mentioned have pretty much nothing to do with the Kitin, Karavan, or Kami (which are the main storyline). The one thing that you talk about, the goo, after 2 years it's still in the same place it was back them. What happened to the Zorai insisting on fighting the goo?
I'm sorry but what you mentioned is nothing but fluff and does nothing to argue that the story of Ryzom is moving forward at all.
As for the "Raid" engine. When was the last time it was used???
I just started playing Ryzom a few days back and its realy fun while WOw to me can just be killing monsters and doing realy dumb quest plus hate the pvp hunters and warriors plus a pally and your kinda screwed and sometimes a rude community and strange economist system (15g for a realy nice sword would be a good price when WOW was first made now it goes for about 500g) THough i realy have nothing to say about Ryzom except it does give high effort into all areas of the game and i think it has a bit of a unique style.
Well having given both of them a try, I don't really see why it needs to be one or the other...I'd say the two game types complement each others weaknesses very well. If someone should ever make a game with WoW-type questing with the depth and variety of Ryzom, set in a sandbox world, they'd have a hit on their hands for sure. That said, WoW is far too shallow (albiet with good basic gameplay) and Ryzom needs some more scripted content, which I hope the Ring expansion might help with.
Thank you for pointing out WoW falling from the charts! WoW WAS the best mmorpg untill you got to the higher levels then it was just grinding and weak pvp because if you fought a mage or shammy they ownt you (atleast thats how it was when I played). And the Ryzom players have converted me I've doen SWG and WoW so far SWG for about 3 years and WoW from about 1 ish. I really hope that Ryzom will be the cure for my love of MMORPG!

Agree with you except: Where on earth do you come up with WoW being the best done MMO until now? I can think of multiple MMORPG's that were done "better" than WOW.... they're just older.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online. Sig image Pending Still in: A couple Betas
WoW is a watered down POS excuse for an MMORPG. Everyone who was playing MMORPGs BEFORE WoW was released knows this. The only reason WoW has 6 million plus players is because they were all Warcraft and Diablo fans. Most of those players won't leave WoW for new MMORPGs because any of the other games will seem way too hard compared to WoW.
WoW is a very popular game and a huge financial success, but if you think it's a good game then you should really take advantage of the free trials that real MMORPGs are offering.
I have yet to try Ryzom, but I am downloading the free trial now. Is there a FFA PvP server?

The things you mentioned have pretty much nothing to do with the Kitin, Karavan, or Kami (which are the main storyline). The one thing that you talk about, the goo, after 2 years it's still in the same place it was back them. What happened to the Zorai insisting on fighting the goo?
I'm sorry but what you mentioned is nothing but fluff and does nothing to argue that the story of Ryzom is moving forward at all.
As for the "Raid" engine. When was the last time it was used???
Agentwise

Which FF Character Are You?
