After upgrading to 1GB RAM (this was pre-cu) I can remember being in a 200 person battle with no issues.
For shits sake, lets say what Garva said is true...it was client side lag....the Devs would know the limit of what the client can do...like he said "I doubt ANY current MMO could handle that many people" THEN WHY OH WHY WOULD OYU MAKE YOUR FIRST MAJOR POST NGE CONENT ADDITION A HUGE PVP EVENT THAT YOU "KNOW" THE CLIENTS CAN'T HANDLE???????
And FWIW what he said was BS....
Pre-cu SWG would of reacted the same way to such an event , CU as well . The system has always bogged down always . Bloodfin used to have 100+on 100+ battles almost every night Pre-cu . Everytime they were lag fests ,but they were fun .
Rememeber trying to PVP around a packed cantina pre-cu ? The second anyone initiated combat everything slowed to a crawl until you got far enough away . Most games would react the same way . This is network lag we are talking about , I have the best cable connection available in my area . I get lag all the time in big battles, Past or present I also have 2 gigs . My screen rate doesn't really drop , My specials won't fire is the problem . I remember Pre-cu lag so bad my attacks would go off 10 mins after I was dead and couldn't clone.
If you played on Bloodfin then you should remember the battles between my guild NDC and MASC city, way more people than this event had at it, But only once do I remember the server crashing from it. IMHO the lag is worse than it was preCu around say publish 9 and 10. For some reason there is also more packet loss in the NGE. This type of game is just not designed to run this type of combat system efficiently. Back to the drawing board with this one. They can still claim that they were the first to try it (fps based targeting system in a large scale MMO).
It has to do with clients constantly doing a onclick calculation query against the server. Ever click represents a calculation that queries the x,y,z coordinates for all clients in the area. A target lock system doesn't have this query. This query alone is a cause of massive lag. I went into more detail before but this is simply why.
The server has to process each clients click coordinates and find out if any client was at that location at the time of the click. That is a huge processing overhead. Simply bring back full target lock would probably make this game work 1000 times better.
I can distinctly remeber back int he "preCU" days having PvP battles between AH and Bestine with 400 people involved. It was kinda laggy but well within any playability level. This was a spur of the moment PvP event as people were running around looking for volunteers. there was still a ton of people that did not participate. Not to mention all the people on the other planets that didn't even know this was going on.
Since that PvP event in preCU 3 years ago I have purchased a new computer with twice the memory and processor speed as well as a more powerful video card.
So if the Restus event was so laggy that it crashed the server or made for an unpleasant game experience ... I would say that it is due to the code being a complete F'ing mess. Especially since these sorry excuse for game developers can't handle the code and had to dumb it down. Or who knows ... now since they made the NGE maybe SWG has to share bandwith .... where before maybe they had their own pipe to handle the playerbase?
But I truly don't believe that it was the clients that was causing the problem. I mean really... 300 people at one time is NOTHING compared to preCU.

It can't, that's why this is whole mess is so funny.
Players: Umm, can you please do something about lag during the Restuss event? We've had multiple server crashes...
We just wanted to say thank you to all who participated in the first series of Restuss Events last night on Ahazi, Bloodfin, Radiant, Scylla, Eclipse and Naritus. The Battle of Restuss is the first of its kind for SWG or any other MMO, and we are glad that so many people logged in to check it out! We do consider this a learning experience and did monitor server performance last night. We know many players had some issues with lag and overall performance. A couple of servers had some problems switching over the event. We apologize to those of you who experienced any difficulties. With this in mind, we are planning on pushing out a fix the beginning of next week that we hope will improve server and client-side performance. This should help all players during upcoming Restuss Events as well as any other future large-scale in-game events.
Hey guys wanted to jump in on Vapors thread. When I made the comment at the Stratics HoC chat that we would not have lag we were all working hard testing the event and felt solid about the outcome. Obviously our tests did not mimic reality for everyone and some of you were affected. I am genuinely sorry for that. Our intent was to deliver an epic server wide event and we are working to improve the Restuss encounter for the servers who have not yet experienced it.

End of the day, devs still look like morons. The entire lead up to this "mother of all events" had failure written all over it, and the players tried to tell them so.
example: When you TC has some issues with the vent in questioon, you do not tell the population of your game, "well gee TC is not really anything special, it is just a dev/user playground>

Someone explain this to me please? what EXACTLY was first of its kind? and why is is so complex that 300 players managed to crash a server with it?
WOW's server wide event on Moonrunner alone had well over 300 logged on, online and the sever did not in fact crash while all the ingame morphing of the world space was occuring. I know i was in the middle of a pvp right at the crossroads with 30 allaince and 35 horde at the same time.

I was just wondering the same thing. Never heard of him before. I am also surprised not to see Julio or one of the other regular Dev's on there saying anything/apologizing. To top it off I just read the 6 pages of responses and not one is fully positive yet. They have a media nightmare on their hands. Can you just imagine what the big name PC gaming magazines/websites will be saying about this next month?
"If we don't attack them, they will attack us first. So we'd better retaliate before they have a chance to strike"
Ignore reality and believe our BS. It's all your fault. Our coding, servers & testing were perfect, and there was no way we could have predicted it since all of the feedback we recieved about the TC event was biased complaints about lag & stability. David Jones Associate Producer, SWG
jneri Lucas Arts I never claimed there would be no lag, because as a gaming professional I had no idea how crappy everyone's machines are. Forget what I actually typed, because it didn't apply, and therefor can't be used against us. We can't help how crappy your machine is playing our client or that you are all using dialup, and based on the fact that everyone claims to have had issues, we can only assume that those claiming to have "gaming machines" & 8mb connections are all liars, and therefor can't be trusted regarding their experiences which means the Event was Great.
Some may think we're not addressing your concerns, but it's obvious by our response that we don't care about your concrens, which is a response in it own way.

LOL....just read the Galactic Senate Weekly Report : Friday 7th July, 2006 and laughed when I got to the bottom of the weekly events:
"Uber lag fest. Heswindu calls it as he sees it after lag issues with servers in Stage 2 of the Restuss event. Questions about what was done to prevent this from happening--as promised in the June 1st Stratics Chat--are asked. Meatpuppet1987shares a video of how bad things really were."
I call total BS. I can think of at least 5 MMORPG's in which I have seen WAY more than 300 people in an area without any significant problems. SOME people lagged but the servers never crashed or hiccups. Those of us with good enough systems didn't even LAG.
Just to name a few: DAOC EVE AO PlanetSide (Pre population cap on continents, to this day you can still have upwards of 375 in an area) SWG - PreNGE we had over 1000 people on Lowca involved in huge PVP battles.
Waitasec... SWG is in that list... so exactly what did they do with NGE that suddenly made the game such crap that it can't handle 300 players in one place? They messed up and they're trying to blame the customer's computer. Hate to break it to you folks but the days where you can do that are long gone. I know folks with 4ghz+ systems (OC'd) with quad 7800 cards in SLI mode who can run CIRCLES around the SWG servers, performance wise. Matter of fact I'll have one of that caliber or better next spring when do my bi-annual upgrade (every other tax return I upgrade my computer).
SOE is full of crap.

I remember in the old days Cnet would be packed with well over 200 people. Cantina full of dancing entertainers. Med center full of medics healing. Starport having a bunch of docs buffing. People loading in and out from the shuttle ports, and the starport. BH's using the BH terminals there, and launching thier droids. People dueling. And not to mention the chat channel was swamped with people talking and advertising for thier malls......With all that going on, the server never crashed.
