Originally posted by Elnator I call total BS. I can think of at least 5 MMORPG's in which I have seen WAY more than 300 people in an area without any significant problems. SOME people lagged but the servers never crashed or hiccups. Those of us with good enough systems didn't even LAG.
Just to name a few: DAOC EVE AO PlanetSide (Pre population cap on continents, to this day you can still have upwards of 375 in an area) SWG - PreNGE we had over 1000 people on Lowca involved in huge PVP battles.
Waitasec... SWG is in that list... so exactly what did they do with NGE that suddenly made the game such crap that it can't handle 300 players in one place? They messed up and they're trying to blame the customer's computer. Hate to break it to you folks but the days where you can do that are long gone. I know folks with 4ghz+ systems (OC'd) with quad 7800 cards in SLI mode who can run CIRCLES around the SWG servers, performance wise. Matter of fact I'll have one of that caliber or better next spring when do my bi-annual upgrade (every other tax return I upgrade my computer).
SOE is full of crap.
You don't just have players there though. You have hundreds, maybe thousands of NPCs, bombs falling from overhead fighters landing on the ground (and doing damage), ships landing and dropping more NPCs, and god knows what else.

You're WAY off...
There weren't even 100 NPC's there, and I know, I've now been to 2 of them.
There are no fighters landing on the ground. There are dropships, but FYI- They're considered an NPC... a fat one.
The Bombs going off are not synced to the bomb runs. The Bombers are the same as the ships flying over Bestine every 3 seonds, just a few more of them... maybe 12 total.
I was part of an Event for MxO (right after launch) were my own faction had 6 Crews of 8 there alone, and we were only about 1/4 of our Faction Represented. I would estimate there were over 400 people there at least, if not more. People were fighting for Blocks. Those of us with HyperJump were fighting on Roof Tops.
The battle was the climax of an Event (and at the beginning they KNEW how to do Events, they were AMAZINGLY well writen and executed) and took place in a Park. At the End, rips openned in the MAtrix and these fake Agents began POORING out, HUNDREDS of them. The Main Factions had to stop fighting eachother and start fighting together. At the end, I and the other Faction Leaders were called to meet our various Leaders (mine, the Marovingian) were we had a meeting to discuss what other areas of the city we should try to control. For fighting in the Event, everyone in my Faction was awarded a special ability / buff.
They Dropped the ball with that game, but when SOE bought it I was PRAYING they would bring the Event team over the SWG. These guys new what they were doing. Laggy? Yup, but no more than 3 second spikes, and at the end there were over 600 players and NPC's fighting, all in a persistant world, with "ripping" graphics destroying the world all around. If MxO had been better in combat and non-combat content, I would have stayed for the Event Team... of course, now Events are rare...
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
We did do profiling and testing on Test Center several times leading up to the release of Restuss. The main difference was population. We had a very large response to the dev events, but the population was not quite where Ahazi or Bloodfin was during this event. We learned a lot from the testing on Test Center that directly translated into improvements in the feature as a whole (not just the battle.) My main point is that the response we saw on the live servers (in particular Ahazi and Bloodfin) was so immense that these resulting issues were exhibited.
David Jones Associate Producer, SWG
So, lets see... the Servers that didn't crash had a planet Lock-Up for Rori, but that's not an issue. And I love how they say they planned a Serve Wide Event, but they weren't expecting people to show up? These guys are pathetic...
Poor Bria, you are #$%^&*...

Yes that is rather horrid business insight. When you do something on a test center, you prepare not only to see if it handles that light load, but how it will react when it handles a full load. They also promoted this as the big event to save SWG. I guess the devs have an even more pessimistic view of subscriptions then we do if they thought nobody would show lol.
The problem is though they have stated that they dont use Test Center to really test anything, other than the changes... Helkios stated they use their Q and A department for all the internal testing.

I think they may actually be ahead of schedule.
