Im curious, has the mmo world discounted the very people that helped make it big? Im rapidly approaching my 30th birthday, and after roughly 13 years of online gaming dating all the way back to MuDs, Ive figured out one thing.
The new MMOs dont cater to adults, (dont even try to squeeze an EVE online ad in here, ill throw up, again, or in two months after Ive aquired the right amount of skill points to vomit correctly.)
It seems like the games we started on initially, like EQ, or UO, and the like have pretty much burned out what they can do for the long term player. And new games it seems like cater to a younger demographic, and of course I understand thats probably where the money lies.
I find myself contemplating quitting MMOs altogether, none of em are original, the communities are terrible (sorry kids, you arent as much fun to hang out with when yer not a kid yourself) and whats worse is ive found myself playing games even worse than what was out 5+ years ago!
Im not trying to hate on anyone here, but I am curious if the mmo industry is either ignoring the pioneers, or have decided our demographic is too small to cater to.
I dunno, someone enlighten me if Im missing something.

But girls keep saying that guys have the mental evolution of teens anyway!
Beside, there are game with a LOT of commitment, Saga of Ryzom for example is extremely harsh and hardcore IMO, yet nicely done. Not for me, but still, very nice.
Anyway, there are plenty MMOs out there, I am not sure the majority even cater to teens, but maybe. I dunno.
I know that my friend who is over 45 is playing WoW with his DAD! I mean, that can't be that bad, is it?

I'm 31 and play yes you guessed it EVE!!!!!
I don't think companies are trying to squeeze out anyone, but some just want money so will cater to the largest segment of paying MMO customers they can. A few companies don't do that, but no-one is trying to discourage customers in my opinion.
I think the MMO market is better than ever since you have much more choice than before, and there are MMOs that appeal to the more mature. Although I must say I've met many adults online with a mental age of a nine year old and 13 year olds that have better socializing skills than some twice their age!

Well I will never see 40 again.
I have played MMO's for a LONG time. I do agree that MMO's seem to cater to the younger crowd with easier game play. I guess we cant blame the companies for going after the larger market.
I guess I am getting old but I find leet speak, trash talk, and sexual themes on general chat make me want to just grab the little creeps and stuff a sock down their throat. I know there are some younger players that dont do this but most of those that do are younger.
Also any game that I have to turn off general chat to play I quit. **cough WOW cough**
Support Bacteria, its the only culture some people have.
I am almost 42...
I play WoW with my son.
I play Oblivion, BF2, HL2 when he isn't around...
Then I come back here waiting for the Next Ultima or Turbine to tell us they redid AC2 to be like AC1...
I am watching out for HJ, LOTRO, VG:SoH, DarkFall and maybe even WAR since my son tells me it will be the ultimate PVP and will kill WoW. LOL...
In the end I lost hope for VG:SoH, don't expect so much of DF and holding out for HJ to bring back the old days of MUDs. Well atleast Simutronics is planning something...I hope. But I think LOTRO is my last stand with Turbine and if they screw that one up I will take them off my favorites.
I have a feeling in a year from now I will be gaming with my son in WAR, playing Quakewars when he's not around and cursing Turbine for being such idiots. On, in my spare gaming time I will be working on my NwN2 mods and anticipating the new upcoming Forgotten Realms Online by Bioware. Well, in my dreams....hmm maybe it wil be a futuristic post apocalyptic MMO, maybe something like Fallout. Now that would Kill WoW in a heartbeat....Survival in the wastelands. Man, I will loose my job on that one.
Oh BTW don't ever give up gaming. Shees I wish I could get a pic of my stepdad playing Metal of Honor Allied Assault. He's 75 years old and a retired Engineer. Nothing looks funnier than to see him play a FPS game. He doesn't play online but just the single player. Shees, he'd get owned even by a 5 yr old. LMAO. hmm, think I will get a picture of him playing and have it in my sig....with a sign saying....The Godfather of Gaming!
The 30+ year old crowd is my fave to play with, occasionally.
hehe
See, it is our generation whom completely grew up with vgames/computers. I think as the baby boomers retire and make room for us gen'xers things will evolve. I dont mean to segregate the generations, but I do believe there are distinct differences in schools of thought between "us" and "them".
And playing with the younger players, I do feel more like a baby sitter at times. You get some who have to be completely dramatic about everything. At heart they are good, just that you must have alot more patience with them.
"...and with that cryptic comment, I'm off to bed!"
definately a different mindset between us and babyboomers.
Whats funny though is what finally made me realize the last vestiges of my youth were gone was seeing a car commercial aimed specifically at us. It was complete with earringed, tattoed spiky haired alt rocker look alike lol.
There are existing games that have 'ok' communities but the games tend to be comparable to being unconscious or the communities are so small you may as well play neverwinter nights.

No doubt, what's next? Led Zeppelin playing over the intercom n retirement centers!
35 here..
I dont think theyre squeezing out the adult gamers, but I think those of us who are in our upper 20's and 30+ are just getting burned out on MMO's.
we're the generation that has played ALL of them and we're seeing very little change in the mechanics and genre. Even the younger gamers are starting to experience this.
we're also the generation who played PC games since the invention of the personal computer. We've been through all stages of graphics development, AI improvements and the internet explosion. I think we've become slightly jaded and ..well just expect more.
things are NOT advancing like they used to. Each time a new PC game came out, it seemed like new benchmarks were set. You can somewhat still see this in single player games, but you definitely do not see this in MMO's
so I feel that we adult gamers are feeling exiled because we've been through many years of PC gaming and expect a lot more then what we're given..
oh..and playing games swamped with kids sucks also.. I gotta agree on that point :P but thats why I do a lot of research on the guilds/corps/clans I join to find out how many adults actually are member compared to kids.
but I mean lets face it, table top and video games are very jouvenile as a whole unless your at a poker table
sucks getting old.. doesnt it?

I agree with your post completely Rayx0r.
I think I maybe am victim of MMO burnout, and Ive complained countless times on countless forums about the lack of imagination behind current MMos, but its the companies perogative to go with what works so they have the cash flow. Still, doesnt make me any happier knowing that :P
Sadly Companies are catering to the Kiddies nowadays and nothing us Adults can do about it. Only because it's ALWAYS about the money and not about the people in their community who supply them that money.!

Bah, WoW is a MMO that leads you by the hand. However, playing CCS with one hand? hmmm...HACKER!!!
Oh BTW, CSS is old. BF2 is where the action is. Only nubs play CSS. Shees and I am almost 42..
I simply dont ask people for their ages on games, im 17 but the majority of people i game with i know are in their 20s-30s because they complain about their children or their wife/husband all the time, they know im in my teens because i complain about collage or my pearents.
I find that the fps non mmo games such as americas army have a much more mature community, teamspeak can be a major benefit in weeding out kiddies because you can instantally tell if they are going to be annoying if they start making fart noises down their mic or anything like that.
I'm fairly new to mmorpgs in comparison to most, only been playing them for around 4 years, starting with my precious tibia . Most games today all owe themselves to the 1st people that got addicted and supported the 1st real mmoprgs, without them this website probally wouldnt have ever been created and the unstoppable flow of new games would never have come to be (weather they be original or not something innovative is bount to come around and have us all pissing in bottles frantically clinging to our computers).
I make claymations, check them out if you want on youtube. (WARNING, very sick and wrong, dont watch if you are offended easilly)
I find MMOGs more engaging every year, and I'm 36.
You're clearly missing something. Whatever that is, you'll have to figure that out for yourself.
