1. Grind as in no quests just grouping with people and killing mobs until yer max level
2. Grind until you claw your eyes out from boredom and the longevity of gametime it takes you to get a level.
If you like 1 over 2, AND you liked Guild Wars for its PvP and not its instancing, than shadowbane is for you. You can get max elvel in about three days and start fighting huge guild battles once you hit level 20/75(ish).
Originally posted by devils_hymn grind isnt bad in maplestory dont listin to the other dude i got to lvl 30 in a day and in a week to lvl 60 without hacking
This is a lie, you can't get to 30 in ONE DAY, and you can't get to 60 IN A WEEK. Please try not to make it sounds so obvious that even a 5 years old can figure out. Lvl 30 in a day, man I really wish.
Tried shadowbane and absolutely hated it. Graphics and control were horrible. Thanks for the suggestion tho. If I had to do any type of grind, I enjoy questing alot more then just killing mobs over and over.
Originally posted by OMRomero I'm going to give DAOC a try and maybe even DDO. As long as they got good pvp and little grind any game would be great! Questing is definately alot more entertaining if it must be done then just plain grinding, at least in my opinion. I appreticate all the help, thanks.
I dont believe DDO has PVP. I played it when it first came out - the fact that you HAD to group was the reason I only played it for two weeks before cancelling. The quesitng was cool though.
DAoC was good. Give it a shot. A bit dated on some things, but a good game nonetheless.
"...and with that cryptic comment, I'm off to bed!"
Two things... 1) I'd avoid WWIIOL like the plague. I played on and off for a few weeks (no more than an hour at a time) and always ended up back playing Battlefield 2. WWIIOL has bad graphics an oversized world for an undersized playerbase, and outdated game technology.
2) Damn EA for cancelling Ultima Online 2. Ultima Online was the greatest MMORPG ever created in my opinion. I still play once and a while, but have been spoiled by modern day graphics and the ability to see more than 50 feet in any one direction.
Why hasn't an MMORPG developer made a UO Clone? I seem to recall UO competing fairly well against EQ when they were both in their prime.
As far as minimal grind, it depends how much you play. I feel that WOW has fairly quick leveling compared to most MMORPGs.
But as another post said, check out Ultima Online private servers. There are several hundred to choose from and 5-10 good sized ones. If you can handle the old-style graphics its a fun game. Many of the private servers harken back to the days of open-pvp. The inability to simply walk casually from one city to another without a convoy of other players.
The modern MMORPG is simply not worthy, of the acronym RPG. The straight grind and lack of atmosphere leave me with no choice. From this day forth, World of Warcraft, Everquest 2, and all the games like them shall be referred to as PIGCRAP. People In Guilds Constantly Raiding And Power-leveling
Just recently stumbled apon this thread while performing a search (bumped this instead of making a new one). I'm looking for the same exact thing but there is not anything like Guildwars at the moment. As far as any upcomming games being similar to Guildwars concept, the only thing that comes to mind is Darkfall and maybe even Fury.
Funny someone brought this back up. Yeah, I ended up sticking with Guildwars. There's just no alternative rite now and the two games d1ce mentioned are the only hope.
Guildwars is almost perfect in my opinion I just need open pvp and ranking/ladder of more content like eq2's leaderboards. I'll just have to wait for a future game to have this.
EVE just might be close due to its sandbox nature. i mean, all u need to do is make ISK. some make a living from salvage in 0.0. just showing up like a vulture when a fight ends and cleanup. others jump into frigs, pick their fights, and takedown the big fish
might be possible to pursue other ways to in 0.0.
due to the serious death penalties people rather pay a ransom demand rather then lose their ship. ive also heard of corps making good ISK just charging for protection.
other corps make a decent living wardec'cing others. pure assassin corps that have no place to call home that are paid by 'respectable' corps to do their dirty work. my friend's corp kept ganking some miners in 0.0 and they got pissed and hired an assassin corp to end their existence. his corp got decimated.

oh a ladder. hm, yeah only other MMO ive played that had that was Starport but its 2d. wasnt aware EQ2 had that. when I tried it at launch it didnt have PVP
"As a Level 1 Citizen you can gain another level by completing the Principles of Architecture, Principles of Body or Principles of Leadership. Once you complete any one of these principles you will gain a level and receive a new title: "Initiate of Architecture", "Initiate of the Human Body" or "Initiate of Leadership".
As a Level 2 Initiate you can gain a level by completeing any of the principles you did not complete from Level 1, or any of the new principles gained at Level 2: Principles of Art and Music and Principles of Thought. Once you have completed any of these 4 principles you will gain a level and receive the title "Initiate of Two"

Well uh...EQ's last two expansions added a huge pile of quest arcs to do, but the trouble I have with pretty much all MMO's is that quests boil down to some guy telling you *which* mobs to kill over and over, so you can loot their eyeballs and give them to him in a box! God knows I can't recommend EQ to anyone wanting to avoid grinding.
DDO was all about quests as people have said.
UO is probably your best bet for non-grind but the graphics are old-school to say the least (and it's restricted to a third person view).
I personally think Anarchy Online (though the graphics suck massively) offers an excellent variety between dungeon crawl, land fighting, PvP and PvE. If only they had player flown space ships.... Anyway, it's *very* (as in not necessarily challenging enough) easy to hit level 200 on a free account (last time I played you had to pay to get passed that). Finding a group on a free account is difficult to impossible, but I never had any trouble soloing no matter what race/class combo I made...mostly because the mission terminals have a slider that lets you push things over to the "easier" side for the squishy characters. I *never* logged off AO feeling like I hadn't accomplished anything, but I did get a little bored after a while.
I can pretty much certify there is not much grind to EVE at all. maybe not as light as Guild Wars but decent.
I'm in an Alliance PVP corp. they set me up with ships. when i lose ships they build me a new one. now ya maybe i might end up having to mine because I cant fly a bigfish yet in 0.0 but as we made our push towards one of our POS last night I saw wrecks all over the place. hell my wreck alone probably set some lucky PVPer up with some ISK
u just gotta have the balls to hit 0.0 if u dont want to grind.
and there is no need for a ladder. PVPers all know who the best guilds are due to the real fights we have over real resourcves
I did play Guild Wars extensively as well have multiple 20s and was in a top ranked guild. but so far what I'm seeing is EVE is really awesome wars with tons of pvpers onscreen altogher. just wrecks floating around all over 0.0. this is how it should be, choas and death everywhere u go. I hope i never have to leave 0.0 for a damn thing I hope.
bottom line though maybe someone will have to grind ISK but that doesnt mean -you- have to be the one that does the bottom feeding. but even doing PVE in 0.0 is really exciting due to the all out wars and impact u can have on the universe
edit- the time based skill progression prevents the ultimate player skill element u have in guild wars tho
one more game to checkout if u dont mind 2d graphics is Starport. that game is similar to EVE but its very casual oriented. there are no skills u have to grind in Starport. some will grind sure but -you- dont have to is the key. You can be a pirate and jsut simply invade other peoples colonies. I had one of the best ships in the game day #2 thats how light it is.
Its all player skill like GW. you pilot your own ship and fire your own guns. due to the heavy player skill involved, a newbie can slay a vet. espcially due to the serious nature of the game. no logging out to escape death. just straight up open PVP and a true test of your morale.

"Looking for alternative to guildwars/little to no grind mmorpg"
Sorry to say but there are none, grind all the way
Assuming you talking about the post above "darkfall"
no lvl's nor item based,no grind

Hmmm well as far as upcoming games I see Tabula Rasa, Huxley, Hellgate:London and maybe Age of Conan as being good games for you.
Right now, there isn't much out there. I'd reccomend trying The Saga of Ryzom (there's a free trial).
yeah guild wars is in a class all on its own pretty much those devs really outdid themselves. maybe at some point ill pick back up on GW too heh
atm we're hoping Two Worlds xbox 360 turns out decent. 8 player coop supposedly should be out end of this month or something
besdies that we've had fun with neverwinter nights and other coops like that.

Try 'A Tale in the Desert': http://www.atitd.com/
No Combat.
