OVERVIEW OF RESTUSS EVENT:
They took the city of Restuss on Rori and made it the center of an ingame "event". Storyline is basically the Rebs and Imps are fighting over some experimental power source in the city, which ends in a large battle in which the city is reduced to rubble in a large explosion.
Basically the event was to proceed according to player progression on certain Restuss centric missions based out of the Imp and Reb camps that were placed near Restuss. These camps grew in appearance as players advanced through these missions, basically creating a race between the factions to complete their sides base 1st. After both bases were completed, the event was to advance to the next stage.
Eventually after the bases are done, and the "event" advances, there is a large PVP faction battle within the city of Restuss, with lots of npcs of both sides, TIEs and XWings flying about, ATAT, etc etc, at the end of which the city experiences the large explosion that leaves it rubble from then on out.
After the city is reduced to rubble, Restuss became a permanent PVP area, where only faction aligned players can enter, and once you cross into Restuss you are automatically turned Special Forces and subject to other players coming after ya. This part also contains new missions that force players to go into the PVP area of Restuss, and also the new saber hilt drops off a mob that only spawns inside the PVP area.
What happened was the base building missions at the begining were bugged and exploited, and un-balanced between the factions, making it an unfair "race" from the get go. Crafters were essentially forced to pay credits to participate in the event due to the fact their base missions involved them crafting endless amounts of E11s and Rocket Launchers at their own expense, only to be handed over to the npc and thus wasted.
Players were also unclear how a faction was declared the "winner" of the event, the badges were buggy, and apparently it was based on who completed their base first, and since that was an unbalanced "race" it seemed nobody ended up happy, win or lose.
The actual main battle inside Restuss, basically was a slideshow to most, as the lag was unbearable, most players couldnt have fought during that battle even if they wanted to as the lag was just too much and many ended up crashing etc. For example Ahazi's event basically lagged, froze, crashed, then bugged, nobody got to really do anything but stand around and wait to go LD, and when the grand finale came the city exploded.....and nothing friggin happened, no rubble etc, looked the same as ever. Although it had been turned PVP as it was supposed to, it wasnt until a fix was patched and the devs manually flipped it that the city actually turned into what it was supposed to look like.
To help with the lag on the other servers who hadnt experienced the main battle yet, they supposedly made a patch fix, but the main way they went about helping keep the lag down was by not announcing the main event as they had before, both in the forums and on the launchpad when logging in. Many players were very angry that they missed the main battle due to it happening without anybody knowing when, as if you didnt check the forums that morning you'd have no clue the event was going to happen that day. This angered many people who were wanting to attend and waiting for the day to come, yet when it finally did come nobody bothered to tell them. Even the announcements they did make in the forum were vague and many that saw them still didnt know when the event was actually to occur.
The PVP Restuss now appears to be little more than a griefers paradise, as factions fight to control Restuss and prevent the other faction from completing their missions or getting the loot drops, causing many players to just faction hop to get the loot they want without hassle, also many bitter feelings over who "won" have spilled over into the aftermath of the event further tainting the area of Restuss with bad joojoo, and the desire for speeder-killin, ganking, and over all griefing seems to be the fotm. Although it also appears many servers are getting tired of all that, and are now just sitting around camping the hilt drop, making the PVP area look like a waiting room at the methadone clinic.
Basically, in many players eyes the event was a total failure. From the first moment they cleared out Restuss to make way for the event changes and didnt bother to re-drop all the quest npcs that were there, to the ill prepared missions to build the bases that had little to no thought put into them it appears and thus were exploited and hated by many, to the unbalanced race to make the bases, to the lag-fest crash party that was the main event battle for many, to the griefing gettin-old-quick PVP zone left over at the end, it all adds up to one not-so-impressive event, that was hyped way too much for what it ended up being.
SOE described this event as something that would change the galaxy forever, but aside from Restuss looking like rubble and the gcw turning into a loot-camp contest, I fail to see how this event changed much. In all it was a grand disappointment for many players, and a confirmation of how far out-of-touch SOE is when it comes to making SWG fun and as they like to put it..."starwarsy"

The main battle was a one-time event, if you wanted to see that and missed it you were screwed. After that battle Restuss becomes a rubble filled PVP area forever. So on the servers where the battle has occured already Restuss is now a 24/7 factional PVP battleground, if you enter Restuss you will become SF and subject to PVP, there is no choice in that.
The phase 2 base-building missions can still be done during phase 3, and will get you comendations to spend at the comendation officer npc inside the bases, this is how you get the new weapons and wotnot, this will also trigger you getting the events badge it appears. The post-battle phase 3 missions are the ones that force you to go into Restuss, thus granting more comendations, but also subjecting you to forced PVP. Im unsure if phase 3 ever ends, or if this is how Restuss will be from now on, with these missions always being offered etc.
Restuss is now the main PVP/GCW area in the game, everybody hangs out there atm it seems, the BHs all seem to have to go there to find their marks these days, even the spammers and venders have set up camp there. So if youre into PVP/GCW then Restuss is where youre at, its the fotm, especially since the new mando armor, weps, and hilt, all come from Restuss based missions and loot drops. Everybody is racing to complete their mando, get the hilt, or if you already have those then grief the players attempting to get theirs, lol.

People that complain they're being "griefed" in Restuss annoy me. You do not have to be there and you get a system message telling you that you are entering a PvP zone and to expect to be attacked by the opposing faction. If you still go in there and get killed then it's your own fault. If you're outnumbered then group up with the rest of your faction and take the city over. I don't care if you're outnumbered, Imperials are hugely outnumber on Chilly yet we always manage to take the city from the Rebels. You just need to get smarter then the other guys

That's the whole idea of Restuss. If you want to do the quest there, you first need to clear out the opposing faction. If your faction controls the city, of course you're not going to let the opposing faction walk in and do their quests. It's a war! Yeah, faction hoppers suck but in general when they were in your faction they weren't doing anything to help and they don't usually do much to help on the other side either. First signs of a battle and they run If you don't want your speeder killed, uh maybe don't use it in an area where it could be shot?
I can only speak for what I've seen on Chilastra, but most people there are enjoying themselves and having a great time. For most, Restuss has brought on some of the best PvP battles since pre-cu The only people tainting it are the few that jump on the forums and complain they're being attacked in a PvP zone.

I love pvp. I got involved in every base raid i possibly could pre-cu.
I love competing and have played many games that require me to kill other players.
I hate restuss. Its laggy, and poorly developed. The city is constanlty held by Rebels on my server. There is no PVP its just people doing that Antenna quest over and over. I play on Eclipse one of the 1st servers it went live on and the execution was terrible. The lag ruined the whole experiance for me.
So your wrong Obraik. The only people tainting it are not just people that complain about being attacked in a PvP zone.

Its a huge failure. 2nd biggest since the NGE.
It's not the devs fault that it's held by Rebels more then it is by the Imperials. There's no extra incentive to be Rebel over being Imperial in Restuss. You need to go out and recruit more to the Imperial side or maybe your Imperials just need to grow some :P Most of the day on Chilastra, Restuss is constantly being fought over.
SWG is a sandbox game. They provided you with a new playground and it's up to you to choose how to use it. If you decide to let the big bullies hold the slide all day then that's your problem, you miss out :P They could have gone like WoW gone the holding hands way and restirct how many people from each faction can be in the area but I think that'd get boring. There's some huge satisfaction to be had when you win the city despite the huge odds against you. It inspires people to work together to achieve a goal and those that don't miss out.

Why?
There's no reason to pvp. There's no benefit, there's no rewards, there's no bragging rights.
Bases were personal. They were placed by guilds, defending it gave bragging rights. It motivated people to organize and prepare.
Restuss is static. It's nobody's. Nobody gives two farts about it, except for commendation grinders (or whatever that antenna thingy is).
Throwing something static in is not sandbox. Recruit people to fight? So that the rebel dominance can be crushed? For what purpose?
The general consesus is, that people are fed up beyond belief with binary faction conflict. It's said in every single game. Even a little twist on the concept (RF Online with 3 factions) still results in complete lack of engagement. Nboody cares about it.
Why WoW works? Because it's grind fest. There aren't any pvpers there, only faction farmers. Anyone who has ever tried it will tell you that pvp in WoW is horrible. Yet so many people do it in order to get higher rank, better gear, and can afterwards pwn lowbies without that. It's a primitive concept, but it's been proven to work over and over.
The pvp in SWG that formed around old GCW base concept wasn't about rebels pwning imperials or the other way around. It formed around guilds and alliances. It was intangible, it wasn't specified anywhere in the mechanics, yet this is what engaged people. You weren't fighting for the rebels - you were fighting for the people you knew and played together.
It can be of course argued indefinitely that Restuss is for the better. But in what way is it different that Theed, Bestine or Coronet or whichever place was the pvp hotspot before. Restuss holds incredible apeal to the shinies-and-trinkets population "oooo a pvp place". But everyone else has long ago realized, that pvp is dead. Nobody will be able to tell you why, just that it's dead.
Go read other game boards, reviews of other games, comparison of design, and player feedback. "We are sick of static conflict between fictional factions" - this sums it up pretty well.
You fight for Restuss so you can get your commendations and to help those in your faction level up. If you don't have control, you can't easily get either. There's also the hilt for Jedi. Not only do commendations buy you the new armour and weapons but they sell very well too. At 50k a pop, if you can get a good number of them you can make alot of cash.

Oh, and I thought the quest reward weapons and armor were crap, and crafters made so much better stuff, that nobody in their right mind would even consider doing anything else.

Uh...to get to those rewards you first need to fight for the city. Depending on how that battle goes, you might not get them.
Except for the heaby weapons, the Mustafar weapons have better stats then the Restuss stuff. I've said a few times now that the Mustafar weapons are superior to those that you can craft. The armour you get at Restuss only has resists of 5.4k. Crafted battle armour (with Primus layering) can get up to 6600.

No need to /rant Obraik I agree with ya on how what some people consider "griefing" others consider "battle", but I really wasnt referring to the GCW-centric PVP you speak of, thats great and Im all for it, and there should be a lot more of it in a game based on a giant galactic civil war imo.
What I was really referring to was the attempts by some players in Restuss to, for lack of a better word, grief other players attempting to have fun there (fun being the gcw-ish fighting you described, or the mission/loots etc).
Now Im not so foolish as to not expect my speeder to be destroyed if im SF in a battlefield, but Im talking more about the hidden spy groups that are blowing up peoples speeders but then not engaging the player in battle beyond that, attacking for the sole purpose of destroying their speeder, then running off probably thinking to themselves "teehee, thats the 100th speeder ive pwned, rawr im teh uberist!". Im all for a good battle, but when your doing that kinda thing it falls more into the griefing catagory in my book.
When I talk about other players inside Restuss attempting to prevent players from completing missions or get loot etc, Im also not talking about a good gcw battle as you described, I also agree in a battleground you best expect to fight while youre in there and not be surprised when you end up dead. What Im talking about are the people doing things like using dead pet "meat-shields" to block the mission objectives, players "looting" the hilt mob to thwart others from getting one (fixed now i think?), and other things of that nature that also tend to fall more into the griefing catagory than the gcw one.
I think that the poorly planned nature of the base building missions, the bugs and exploits, the unfair "race" they created, and the fact that there was a "winner" and "loser" badge depending on that unfair race, ended up leaving a lot of players with a bitter taste in their mouth, and this has spilled over heavily into phase3 PVP imo. The "losing" faction is usually twice as bitter in this instance, and thus I think a lot of the attempts to prevent players from completing their missions and get the loot are almost revenge based rather than gcw based. Ive read many posts from players stating similar bitterness and cheesy attempts to block peoples Restuss goals. I agree there is a fine line between griefing and battle, but a lot of it depends on the intentions behind the participants, and Im only referring to those people whos intentions arent to participate in GCW, but rather cause problems for whoever they deem a target for their shenanigans, usually the opposite faction, especially on those servers where the subject of who "won" is a touchy one, lol.
I think a major flaw in the Restuss event (aside from the bugs, unfairness, and lagfest) is the fact that the new fotm loots are only really available by going into the PVP area, thus exposing yourself to the asshats I spoke of. I think it was very unwise for SOE to release new content and loots (in a game starving for new content) in a GCW/PVP-only area of the game. It shows in the fact that people are faction hopping to attain the new loots, if these players were going to Restuss for GCW/PVP they wouldnt be so quick to faction hop, they are going into Restuss for the loot in most cases, plain and simple, just look at the faction truces starting to pop up, lots of players want the loots in Restuss, not the forced PVP in Restuss. Everybody wants these new loots, and the race to get the loot is tainting a lot of the GCW imo, especially with the added bitterness of who "won" bleeding over into it. I think if the loots were also attainable by doing high level PVE missions out of the bases (ones that gave equivilant comendations to the enter-Restuss ones, and a hilt drop mob) then a lot of the cries of griefing you hate seeing would cease to exist.
So I hope you see Im not one of the people you need to /rant about "complaining theyre being griefed in Restuss", I respect a good GCW battle, and Im not in the forums crying "whaa" all the time because I got ganked in Restuss etc. In fact, Im actually a crafter on my main, and dont bother going into the Restuss PVP area at all, as theres really no point, dying before I enter the 1st gate isnt my idea of content, lol, so Im basically screwed on that front (another great thing about the Restuss event, the crafter base missions were a joke and actually costed us credits to fufill our part, yet in the end we cant even go near Restuss to attempt to gain the main rewards of the event). Before somebody suggests I make a combat alt to be able to get into Restuss, lol, I already have a combat alt, BH, except he's still only lev 39 as I honestly got so sick of the new NGE combat system that I just plain stopped logging him in altogether a long time ago (imo at some points its kinda like Benny Hill made a Whack-a-Mole game or something). So since I dont PVP at all atm, Im not really a victim of any current griefing myself (even if Im the victim of my own Profession-choice denying me access to the event area), but rather Im just stating what my observations of the Restuss event are overall, the post-battle griefing going on being part of that. I /salute you, as it appears from what you stated youre not one of the griefers I spoke of, but rather somebody wanting to enjoy the gcw area for the fun of it, Im only sorry that SOE's poor planning in general regarding this event leads to so many opportunities for others to spread bad joojoo around the Restuss area, adding to the bitterness and further division amoungst an already splintered community.
"Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh... everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?"

I am a Rebel. Thats why its boring no imps to fight and no reason to fight when everyone can just hop factions to the winning side and farm there arses off for crap new weapons, crap new armour that is useless in PVP.
SWG is not a sandbox game. It is not open ended we all go in the same direction dictated to us by SOE's NGE.
Imperials won the initial battle i mean lagfest but the rebels have held th city since. The imps have jumped ship because they want the hilt and to level up alts from level one to level ninty in a day.
There is no real incentive to pvp. Just hop to the winning faction and farm your ass off for items that have no use except look pretty.

Im all for a good battle, but when your doing that kinda thing it falls more into the griefing catagory in my book. Getting your bike blowen up due to a hidden spy isn't their fault and I wouldn't consider it griefing. Hiding is what spies do and if you're entering a PvP battleground you should expect that there are spies hiding out in the field. If they hide after blowing up your speeder, you can bring them out of hiding and you can damage them with AOE's while they're hidden. Who's to say this isn't GCW type stuff? Seems pretty smart to me that an opposing faction would set up stealth fighters to take out peoples speeders and prevent them from getting back in as quickly. This could lower the numbers inside the city so an attack force could have a better chance of invading and taking over. When I talk about other players inside Restuss attempting to prevent players from completing missions or get loot etc, Im also not talking about a good gcw battle as you described, I also agree in a battleground you best expect to fight while youre in there and not be surprised when you end up dead. If there's a pet in the way when you're trying to attack an NPC, run away from it. The NPC will follow you and then you can carry on with your attack. That and NPC's very rarely stay in the same spot. Yes, looting the Emperors Hand has been fixed and her corpse won't dissapear. This is the first I've ever heard of people being bitter over winning or losing the event. Other then the badge, winning or losing didn't give you anything over the other faction and it doesn't change the outcome of the event. Again, blocking the opposing faction from achieving their goals in the city is part of the point of the whole thing. How do you differentiate from someone killing the opposite faction because they're bitter and another who's doing it for the GCW? They're doing the same thing and I can't see the difference. You want to stop the opposing faction from doing their quests at all costs, which is what both "groups" are doing. This is the first peice of PvP content ever put in the game, everything before has been PvE. PvP'ers were forced into PvE to get that stuff. They didn't have to get it, but they had no other option if they did want it. Why should PvE'ers that want stuff from PvP content get special treatment? If you could get the same amount of commendations from doing PvE stuff then Restuss really wouldn't be any different to going /pvp in Theed or Coronet. Keep in mind that alot of what I'm saying isn't soley directed at you Just curious though (not a flame), how are you observing the event if you're not in the PvP? Posts on the forum? Talking to people in game?

Profession wise, no it's not a sandbox anymore. However there is still alot of sanboxy stuff left in the game, and Restuss is one of them. The situation you see on your server isn't always going to be the same you see on another server.

Should I be the first to say it?
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

All spies do in Restuss is blow peoples speeders as they go back and forth to level up there toons with the PVE content Restuss promotes. Its harldy smart tactics to kill peoples speeders while they are grinding. Its not like they are using tactics to win a war, they are just swoop killing in an attempt to slow someones PVE grind down. Most people have crates of swoops on them so its not like the Spies are really doing anything but wasting their own time
If there's a pet in the way when you're trying to attack an NPC, run away from it. The NPC will follow you and then you can carry on with your attack. That and NPC's very rarely stay in the same spot. Yes, looting the Emperors Hand has been fixed and her corpse won't dissapear. what if the npc is corpse on the floor and people cant target it to learn the schematic because some idiots have put pets ontop of the corpse. i read a thread on the SWG Jedi forum regaridng this. And /target didnt help the people it concerned This is the first I've ever heard of people being bitter over winning or losing the event. Other then the badge, winning or losing didn't give you anything over the other faction and it doesn't change the outcome of the event. There used to be battlegrounds in SWG. Restuss is nothing new. Restuss is hardly PVP. You get rewards from completeing the PVE content. Whats the reward for pvping? nothing people just hop to the faction holding the city so they can PVE grind. And your statement above doesnt make much sense. Keep in mind that alot of what I'm saying isn't soley directed at you Just curious though (not a flame), how are you observing the event if you're not in the PvP? Posts on the forum? Hope your eyes bleed reading this lol
Admit it Obraik. Restuss fails as does your poor attempt to convince anyone the NGE along with anything SOE are doing right now is any good

A sandbox-style video game (or a video game with an optional sandbox mode) is a video game with an open-ended and non-linear style of gameplay, or a mode of gameplay within a game that is more often played in a goal-directed manner. The sandbox analogy is used to describe this style of gaming because, as with a physical sandbox, the user is simply allowed to do what he or she wishes (with the available game elements and within the limitations of the game engine - the metaphoric toys within, and bounds of, the sandbox).
Seems to add up to me...you can choose to fight in the battles for the city, you can join the winning faction, you can stealth and take out vehicles/players for a few examples...

A sandbox-style video game (or a video game with an optional sandbox mode) is a video game with an open-ended and non-linear style of gameplay (since you're locked into a Profession, this does not apply), or a mode of gameplay within a game that is more often played in a goal-directed manner.
"Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh... everything's perfectly all right now.
We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?"

Since me and you have been discussing this topic Obraik... What do you think about what the OP stated? I stated it was a total failure and you disagreed.. The OP here listed even more reason as to why its a failure, and aside from your view on griefing - battle.. What do you think about the rest?

1) Spawn camping - check
2) Faction farming - check
3) Commendation farming - check
4) Powerleveling - check
5) PvP - MIA

/rant off
You could go Imperial and stir things up on that side
Profession wise, no it's not a sandbox anymore. However there is still alot of sanboxy stuff left in the game, and Restuss is one of them. The situation you see on your server isn't always going to be the same you see on another server.
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

CS Lewis
Hope your eyes bleed reading this lol
Admit it Obraik. Restuss fails as does your poor attempt to convince anyone the NGE along with anything SOE are doing right now is any good

Seems to add up to me...you can choose to fight in the battles for the city, you can join the winning faction, you can stealth and take out vehicles/players for a few examples...

You're Clueless. You don't even READ what you post...
Your quote is talking about THE WHOLE GAME, not a city. Hey, look, my Kitchen sink is a Sandbox game! I can choose to do the dishes, or not! WOOT!!!
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
