Would "real-time" combat work in a MMORPG?

 If a MMORPG offered the chance for players to use their own skills by allowing you to input actual commands in to pull off attacks and defensive moves with a game pad, would it work? Say each weapon requires you to learn a new set of commands to wield that weapon. Or if spells required you to press a certain sequence of buttons and directional moves to cast, would it not too get boring?

I mean it's bad enough that we have to sit through hours and hours of combat to begin with and now some people are asking for it to be even MORE demandng? For me I say this would work for a PvP setting but not for a PvE one. Let PvP winners be determined by skills with the gamepad, but let PvE battles stick to what's tried and true.

    Sadly as cool as this could be people would just macro it. I'm NOT for making you to have to press a series of buttons to cast spells but a moves system for melee combat has potential.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

    WWIIO has real time combat.

    Are you suggesting like punch out? You see the mob pull back to deck you, and you need to block, or you get hit?

  • Interesting theory. Myself i would say that yor right about sitting through a fight that lasts a long time but u shouldnt hav to sit through a sequence of aankkn to pull off a move if thats wat u mean. if u want to punch you press p if u want to kik pres k etc.

    Real time combat wouldn't work too well.. and would put users on a 56k and from other countries at a big disadvantage. Personally I prefer where you still have a big effect in the battle but it isn't all latency related. And as for a gamepad with a pc.. :/
