Well, I gotta say almost all franchise based fantasy stories are fairly mediocre. There is a clear jump up from say some generic D&D book and say an L. E. Modesitt book. There are exceptions but as a general rule its pretty reliable.
Now a particular D&D or Wrhammer etc campaign setting may be good, but most fantasy books based on them are mediocre. Even the good ones are just fairly decent.
I mean someone like Zelazny, Modesitt, Feist, Glen Cook, David Gemmel, etc. Those guys are just a cut above.
