Doesn't really work on my computer. Crashes all the time.
No idea why. My video card gets wonky with older games...
I wanted to like it, but even if I did get it to work, the choppy animations just make it difficult to swallow. I mean, I don't mind dated graphics, I still play SNES games sometimes, or X-Com. but I just get the impression that shadowbane's graphics were never verry good.
I tried RYl. It was by far the biggest waste of money I've ever... well... ok,, maybe not the THE biggest, but you get the point. It really sucked. There isn't even any PVP in the game, I mean, there is, but everything is duels. How can you compete over resources when you can't kill the other guys?
As for SWG, it sounded like it was really cool once, with the skill based system, and the player housing and all... but I hear a lot of bad things about it recently.
As for UO, never even thought about it. I'll check it out.
Sounds like a problem with your computer, my rig isnt all that new anymore, and I dont have problems with crashes at all.
See, I don't really like the whole instanced battlegrounds thing.
That makes it feel less like war, and more like a team sport.
I mean, to be perfectly honest, I don't even really like tactical combat. I mean, I don't mind it... I realise that it's part of the game, but I'm more interested in... well... in logistics, as in, winning a war by having superior numbers and equipment, and having strategic controll of resources.
Kinda bugged me about WOW... Not enough emphasis on world PVP. I mean, the only world PVP that really happens is rogues ganking people when they're fighting mobs...
It'd have been cooler if WOW was actually more like the Warcraft strategy series. If you could build towns, and cut down trees, and capture mines, and acutally fight over controll of the world map.
*sigh*
Exept that if it was like that, then one side or the other would eventally win, and then that'd be the end of the game...
oh well...I'll keep dreaming I guess...
You are 100% correct sir. Instancing fights is ruining the youngsters in the MMO PvP scene. The reason I loved shadowbane so much is because one guild, if it was large enough, could dominate the entire server. Usually if this happened a bunch of the smaller guilds would pool their resources and souldiers(players) together and take them the f**k out. That is what made the politics in shadowbane so important. Everyone knew who they were and weren't supposed to attack and 90% of the time your guildmates stuck with the KOS(kill on sight) list the guild leader set. The "politics" (i hate using the same word over and over) were purely player driven in that game and that is what made the PvP so intense, you actually felt like you were fighting for a purpose. None of this respawn at the graveyard with all your gear care bear crap. Even in cities like mine "Coliseum Trainers" I had a strict rule that no one could be stole from or murdered while in my city training their skills, and if that rule was broken I put you on my guards KOS list and if you returned to my city...you died.
I hope and pray every day that Darkfall has player driven morals, politics, and respect to the fellow player like shadowbane did. If it doesn't I can still dream that this type of fun and enjoyment will be provided to me in another MMO someday.
In Chronicles of Spellborn coming out, there is going to be a system called shard conquest, which are basically entire planets that guilds/houses battle each other for control over, which sounds better than anything already out or coming out soon. The only problem with this is they have said that it won't be implemented on release, probably a month or two in, but it still sounds sweet.

I think the BGs were ok but I'm in agreement that WoW did have a severe lack of World Pvp. This kind of removed the meaning of pvp and they just kind of patched it up by having some honor kill system which was just flawed really. But anyway back to what I was saying in the previous post, I don't think it necessarily needs to be instanced to alter the amount of resources available at a time. Just the point was adjusting it, or scaling it according to the number of people online. But still problematic. I think EvE Online may have some good solutions in this area.
I'm considering screwing around with my video drivers and such to see if I can get it to actually run, but is it worth it?
I mean, it is an old old game.
And the fact that its' free now isn't all that reasuring. I'd actually rather pay for a good game, and know that there's a well paid staff around to admininster the game and top of the line servers and all that.

My video card in fact.
It crashes on a few other games too... Only older ones, but... *shrug*

So do people still play Shadowbane?
