Apparently I confused you, which is not shocking.
The gamespot review is more then three years old at this point, and was out of date a few months after release (unlike certain other MMOGs, updates were fairly regular and didnt just contain new thousand-man raids to grind on, and a fun little game of CTF).
Oddly enough, the newer reviews are in the 90% range you remarked on. THAT IS UTTERLY SHOCKING AND INEXPLICABLE.
Fun little side fact about the gamespot review, CCP (or their publishers at the time) failed to advertise with gamespot, so the initial review release was little more then two paragraphs. They eventually expanded that to the existing review because of how pathetically inadequate it was (theres a little note at the bottom of the existing review which notes that). Now theyre refusing to re-review it three years later because EVE does not in fact put out a new box you have to buy to continue playing the game you already had.
Nope, you didn't confuse me, the gamespot review was never updated simply because the review rating wouldn't have changed nowadays, regardless of the minor upgrades that were made to EO, the gameplay is still weak overall.
The game hasn't changed at it's core in the least, 3 yrs later, it still remains a poor sci fi game that only has a " large community" as a major asset and lots of loot to make a "redeemable" and interesting MMORPG. That's the truth.
That doesn't imply it's a bad game per say, I just said it's not a stellar game either. Regardless of how technical the game may be, that's not enough to make a fantastic game (though that portion of the game I like as well). I got through the tutorial fine either, it was extremely simple.
The gameplay simply revolves around mining asteroids and killing pirates for months on end, till you get enough ISK to actually do something in the game. That's all there is to it. You can't even land on planets, like in Star Control 2, can't mine on planets, can't do anything. Limited gameplay, as I said. Buying new ships or figuring out which new engine part is best for your ship isn't "great gameplay".
Most of the stellar 90%+ reviews came from European reviewers, which leads me to believe they're also biased (this is a european game after all).
I can understand how bad reviewing magazines would get fooled into giving this game a very high rating however. Just because it's a very technical game and has a large community supporting it, doesn't make it a masterpiece of a MMORPG
I still think the gameplay is weak. And gamespot's review was spot on. their reviews are always the best, from what I've seen
I still think the gameplay is weak. And gamespot's review was spot on :-)
Gamespot also considers WoW the perfect casual MMOG, in spite of the rep grind, raid grind, honor grind....
Then again, blizzard threw a big sack of money at them in exchange for verbal fellatio. The expansion could be a pipe bomb in a box that kills you when you purchase it, and gamespot would hail it as being a 'revolution in gaming, the most explosive release since Doom!'.
My point is that I couldnt give two shits if you like the game or not, gamespot is just a shitty site which exists because morons like you think their reviews are meaningful at all. Its basically prostitution without the risk of catching a STD.
I really did enjoy EVE a lot! Do the two week trial, but get emeressed. The learning curve is a bit steep, but if you do the tutorial, and ask questions you'll be fine. The game is pretty amazing though. I really enjoyed the graphics, and how you could basically do EVERYTHING in the game.
Well WoW was worth a 9 rating at least.. They borked PVP, but the stellar PVE in itself is enough to compensate for the PVP shortcomings (PVE with tactics, etc, diversified bosses). It's a great PVE game, for those who like PVE and raiding.
It's a fast, colorful, diversified, playable game. It brought many improvements over regular PVE game (smaller groups, easier grouping, more sophisticated quests than regular MMORPGs and so on)
WoW deserves it's 9 rating, whether you like the game or not, regardless of how annoying the PVP is, or how "cartoony" the graphics may be. No other mmorpgs has this much diversity in it's scenery, not even EQ or EQ2
But anyways. I would have given it a 9.1/10.. even tho I don't personally like WoW.. heh. Because the gameplay is actually good.. whereas the one in EO is limited overall (excluding the player driven events, which do make this game more interesting)
I dunno what Gamespot says, but any rating lower than 9 just destroys your credibility right there.
You may not like its pace, maybe you don't like sci fi, whatever the case, but to fail to respect its uniqueness and open ended gameplay is totally dishonest journalism.
That's like saying the CIA was responsible for 9/11. Who do you think you're fooling?
Eve is a 9/10 at the very LEAST, and thats even if its not your cup of tea.
I'm taking a break from it right now and its a 9.1, I might play it some more, I might not, but failing to acknowledge that this is a brilliant piece of work is like trying to ignore the Sun.
EVE is lacking way to much to receive a 9. the combat is pretty bad, sure it requires some strategy, but its just so incredible boring. the PVE is close to the worst ever seen in MMO's. there is nothing special about it.

Minor updates? When exactly did you play the game last? The review from gamespot is valid for the game on release, but it does not represent the current game in the least. CCP has added completely new gameplay elements that weren't present on release which have changed the way the game plays drastically, these are all things that the newer reviews recognized that the gamespot one didn't.
They new tutorial, which takes about 3 hours to complete is much more detailed than the first one but still only scratches the surface of what you can do in the game.
The game does not revolve around Mining or Farming NPC's, that's just something to do between the times when you are interacting with other players, whether it be co-operation or competition and there are many people out there who have alternative methods of generating isk. The gamespot review fails to mention that, which is not surprising, seeing as the review clearly didn't spend more than a few hours playing the game at release.
As for landing on planets/mining from planets, if it doesn't add anything to the game but a change of scenery what is the point? CCP's next goal after the kali update is to add planetary interaction and you can bet that it will add a completely different aspect of gameplay into the game. But if you think that mining and ratting is all there is to the game then you already miss the point of the game to begin with. Items play a relatively minor role in the game, it's knowing what to fit and how to use them is far more important, there is no "epic tier 3 items of uberness" in the game that will make any one player unkillable, you'll die just the same, if a little slower against someone who is fielding the right setup.
The stellar reviews coming mostly from Europe has more to do with a complete lack of advertising than anthing else, the game has grown at a phenominal rate considering it's been mostly advertised through word-of-mouth and trial accounts and banner ads, they have put very little/no money into print/tv ads at all.
Gamespot's review are well known to be utter crap by most, and are usually disregarded, hell the player reviews on gamespots own website show just how off the mark their official review is.

it is not that his opinion is not valid. it is just that is fits so well... it is the perfect example us EVE players have been waiting for. he is 17, he is not mature enough for EVE so he hates it. thus, he plays wow, the most simplistic and watered down MMOPRG on history.
Full loot/risk on dieing, fuels this allready awsome economy, this brings great meaning to wars and battles,.
honestly, coming from the original diablo, then UO... and many games since that time... i do not understand how/why people like games where this is no risk/penalty upon death.
by this i mean you actually have your stuff LOOTED or DESTROYED.
i mean, i can understand people loving their stuff and not wanting to lose their "good stuff"; but loss also makes people play smarter. if there's never any loss, you have hordes of horrible players that will never learn to play better -- because there's no penalty for it, OTHER than someone calling you stupid.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

I quit because I was bored to tears, someone always seems to have to be a victim of boredom in this game...
To the OP - not really, but it has a fanatical following. Actual gameplay in EVE involves tons of grinding unless you can get someone else to do it for you. You'll need a ton of money for ships, which you can get from missions, mining, ratting, and sometimes trading. Generally, chatting with other players and fighting PVP battles doesn't actually make money. Down the road you probably won't need to grind anymore, as you will either have enough ships/cash not to worry about it or have production set up, but most corps have lots of people doing lots of grinding so maybe not.
Some people have said that the solution to that is just to find a corp that will keep providing you ships while you learn the game and get good at fighting, then keep providung you with ships. While that would be nice, it seems a bit unbelievable - especially since they always neglect to mention which corps are accepting newbies and handing out ships.
EVE mainly gets high ratings because it has very fanatical players, who believe that you really are less smart if you don't like the, that it's truly amazing in all respects, and that EVE players are all superior to others (read the official forums, especially the corp one, you'll see a ton of self-righteousness). It's not a bad game in total (I don't like it, but I am opposed to grinds and bad interfaces), but it ain't the best thing since sliced bread.

4) A willingness to PVP, even if only getting shot at while travelling
You will not have a meaningful Eve experience, and you will get bored or frustrated and quit.
It takes a personality that most people do not possess, and that is fine, I do not think of them as "inferior beings," however we Eve players tend to be kindred spirits, we like our own type of people.
So if you tried Eve and had a bad experience, then I apologize for any hard feelings and hope you have a better experience elsewhere.
