... by any other name would still ...

Many moons ago when EQ was new, I joined a small guild. One day some one said in /gu "Have you ever found a corpse, went to rez it, then changed your mind because of the stupid named they picked"

I must say that I have. In fact I've gotten to the point where I won't even reply to people with stupid names. I turned down a guild invitation once because they had a member called "illsodomizeu". While your free to associate with who you choose, it says allot about you.

In current MMORPG's our names are almost the only thing that is truly unique. It defines how others view us. I think it speaks volumes about the people behind the keyboard. So I've created a small list of naming do's and do not's for those that wish to be taken seriously, get into groups, and rezzes when they die.

Let's start with the Do Not's:

Do Not pick a name that substitute a "s" for a "z" at the end. ex: madskillz

Do Not pick a name that substitute  "a" for "er" ex: skillzplaya

Do Not pick a name related to a sexual act ex: doghumppa

Do Not pick a name after a part of your anatomy, do not pick a name after a part on someone else's anatomy.

Do Not pick a name with mother in it, anywhere.

Do Not use verbs in your name.

Do Not try to make a political statement with your name. ex Ivotefordean

Do Not try to make your name a statement ex: ilovetoeatchipsanddrinksodaoneveryfriday

Do Not try name yourself after a rapper ex: fiftycent

or after a rappers pet name ex: Imslimshaddy

or after anything having anything to do rap or the music industry in general. ex: britenyspears

Do Not pick a name that has anything to do with prostitution. ex: phatpimpdaddy

Do Not use the word "phat" in your name

Do Not name yourself after illegal activities ex: Iliketosniffcrack

Do Not name yourself after some other popular proper noun. ex: grandalf

Do Not try to creatively spell profanity to get around the work filter ex: bytchz

Do Not name yourself after anything found in a litter box

Do Not name yourself after any action preformed in the bathroom

Do Not name yourself any part of the public sewage treatment plant

Do Not name yourself after any means used to realize air from your body

The list of Do's is rather short

Once you picked a name ask yourself: "Would a parent name a child that" "Would I consider naming a child that" "If someone called me this in life, I wouldn't be offended" If the answer is No to any of these, then you have a high probably of NOT being grouped with, rezz, or getting help in any form from players with self respect.

Wow, I never thought that anyone took naming so seriously, but the more I think about it, the more stupid names in a game are stupid.  The only time I don't mind seeing names like those are on mmog's like Counter Strike or another game were it doesn't really matter what your name is, because no one will really try to remember it.  Only thing though is you didn't say anything about abreviations, for example the bk in bkool are my initials.  Is that stupid I wonder?

The don'ts are pretty funny precisely because they are right on.  Any name incorporating l33tspeak throws a red flag up in my book.  I have a different attitude about people who incorporate pop cultural references if they are done cleverly and conform to the naming scheme.  For example, I once ran across a character named Devona Mothersbaugh.  I'm willing to bet that most of you don't catch the reference - that's what makes it so cool!  image

As far as judging your name as a "do" by whether or not someone would actually name their child that, I've heard of people naming their children Atom Molecule and Tarantula Crustacean image .  Maybe less bizarre but still frustrating are parents who mangle the spelling of a normal name by naming their child Typhanni or Mykkall.  In other words, don't overestimate the judgement of some parents.

Personally, I don't really care about names or profanity for that matter. The way I see it, a person has the right to name their toon whatever they want.

On the other hand, I ignore people who use "m8, l8er, ppl, plz, lo" and other like abreviations. I'm sorry but it won't take too much time out of your busy day to type "hello" instead of "lo." Oh and people who use "lolz." I never got that one. Laughing out loudz? Or laughing out loud zebra? Hmmm... image

I agree 100%. It may be funny the first few times seeing them type of names but it does get old real fast.

I used to have a character named Jeezlueez, but she was sort of a throwaway who ended up being my main for quite a long time. I generally got positive reactions to the name, although few people typed it out-- I was "Jeez" or "Lueez", but hardly ever both. I liked to claim that it was Dark Elvish for "She who beats you up and steals your lunch money."

But I do agree for the most part.

I also tend to react better to shorter, simpler names, rather than names like Mruiuaellscisnarorwe, for example. "Neschria" was generated for me by AO, IIRC. Some of the names I used in EQ were Kensha, Geneene, Unaeni, Merika, Marrelle and Teadanae.  Geneene is pronounced like Janine, and Marrelle was named after Mithaniel Marr, being a cleric of that deity, but mostly, they are just names that looked or sounded nice to me. And, most importantly, they don't tie my fingers or my tongue into knots when typing or speaking.

If your name is Mruiuaellscisnarorwe, then chances are that we all call you Bob when you aren't around.

DAOC was funny because your last name could be like 25 letters or so. I had many a great last name!

I agree, stupid names are from stupid people in my book. Can anyone tell me how uncreative "Pwnz" is for a name? I saw that one last week in HZ. I also remember seeing a "darthvad3r" in SWG.

Me? I certainly don't associate with these idiots in games. It takes only several minutes to come up with a name that won't make you look like a moron. Spending a little time being creative is worth it...

I have to agree. Bad naming can have a negative consequence on the atmoshphere in a game. Although I seem to see it less and less these days.

I'm not completly innocent though. I've got a blacksmith in Horizons called "Zinedin Zidan". Probably won't mean a lot to most of you Yanks :-)

It's partly out of reverence to the god of football and partly because it's such a superb name.

yes, names aren't that bad anymore nowadays.

I sometimes use my wheel of time books for inspiration but never take a name of a main character because it's to well known.

I personally hate things like dartvad3r image, that ain't even fun speaken too, ain't good for some of the gameplay (or you must be in a guild that uses names like this on purpose)

I sometimes uses Nas as a firstname, k it is an artist but i like it because it's short.

Who the hell would name their kid Clever Glove ?

It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.

Clever Glove for a kid?... no.... Clover Gleve... Maybe.

Yeah, I think I like that. Now I just have to obtain another child to name. image Or another MMORPG character.

I agree completely...my general rule of thumb for names is if it takes more than a few seconds to type it they're not getting resurrected or a response to their tells.
