Well what do you classify as MMORPG, are you only counting graphical games in this or are you also willing to except MUDS as well?
If only graphical then I would say either The Realm or Meridian 59 were the first (I could be and most likely am wrong but those are the first 2 that I remember waaaaay back when heh) followed soon after by UO.
If you are talking MUDS as well, then that is a different story entirely, the first ever MUD was created by Roy Trubshaw in 1979, and it was simply just named MUD.
There is a forum on this but i cant find the link. so.....
and i think he wants overall mmorpg. im thinking diablo but.... no.... to late
diablo doesn't even really fall into the mmorpg catagory.

This allot like asking how invented the Hamburger, it all comes down to how you define it.
I belive the in 1961 the kids at MIT linked together the PDP-1 and a TX-0 to play chess in separate rooms. They also make "space war" a game with 2 space ships that fought each other around a single screen with a planet in the middle.
2 people not Multi-player enough?

The people SAIL (Stanford AI Lab) in 1962 had come up with a new game, Don Woods and Wil Crowther wanted something based on Tolkein, something a real adventurer could get into. It was made to run on a PDP-10
It didn't take long for "adventure" game to get passed and expanded. By the 1970's many people on campus could play, all at the same time.
Not graphical enough?
Many thousands of people played On-line muds with RIP graphics, or other types of vector graphics in the 80's. I remember playing on prodigy to that effect. Legend of the Red Dragon support RIP. (later in the early 90's)
Does it have to be 3D? to be a MMORPG?
While this is the very short history of Computers and games. I hope it becomes clear there was never a "eureka" moment. No invented a MMORPG it advanced slowly over time with much hard work from all those involved.
If you find the early years of computers, that shaped everything we do today, interesting. I highly suggest. Hackers by Steven Levy
