Yep, I posted this in the GW forums.

    Can't believe it...

For a game thats all about collecting skills and using them effectively in PvP....wow. How lame is this??

This is what they had planned with the GW store all along...I'm so angry/dissapointed with NCsoft.

I don't know how much you know about NCSoft but I can tell you this. GW is losing money and is currently opperating in the red according to the latest NCSoft Quarterly report.

     here

The game failed miserably in Asia which they where banking on to keep it going. Factions took to long to release (it was originally planned for 6 months after launch) and sales where far below expectations. Like all expansion trends, nightfall will probably perform even lower.

Its hard to say where the future of GW is going. It looks rosey on the outside but things are not so good on the inside.

Yeah, we've discussed this before, I think.

NCSoft is  the rat in the corner right now.

I wonder what the folks at ArenaNet think about this, really. Remembering this game when it was still in development....the vision they had for what the game would represent, what the community would be like, honestly, GW has become something completely different than what I personaly expected a couple of years ago. I remember being so hyped for this game, I bought the freaking collectors edition when it was released, never done that before or since, it was my personal way of showing support for the vision, appreciation for the development team. I installed the day the server went live, and boy was I disapointed. It really seemed like they released an unfinished product, like they were forced into an early release. This latest development is bringing those memories back for me, and I'm thinking now that NCsoft really does manage to ruin any game they get their paws on. What a god damn shame.

eh...what exactly is so bad about this? o.o

Guild Wars has been a big pvp game from the start. I always found it silly you HAVE to do the entire PVE campaing to be able to play PVP in a competive way. this is just a solution for people who don't want to play the PVE campaing, and just buy the game for the PVP.

I think its a great idea, really.

That might be, but they do cool parties. Got an invite at the games convention ^^. But yes, I really do think this is quiet bad. I know they need to make money, but that just doesn't seem to be the right way.

I hope this move turns a lot of GW players off. I never was interested in GW because of it's instancing.

Damn not good news then for no-subscription fee models.

I was never a fan of GW tho I did buy the game long time ago. I enjoyed the start of it... Very nice zone... Untill it was all destroyed and turned in to desert. I cba to play that crap anymore. And PvP was very lame.

And now this... Very bad move. NCSoft lost my respect. It's not that I couldnt afford this kind of crap (99% players can afford this)... It's just very wrong and lame way to get "good" in some virtual world.

+Yes I do understand that some people don't have time to grind (job, wife, kids)... But who is forcing you to play these kind of games that take up lot's of time? Go buy yourself PlayStation and have fun.

Hmmm.......I completely disagree. (dont take that as a personal attack) The game had open beta almost every month for a year. I betaed the game the very first time more then a year defore release. There was nothing "unfinished" or "rushed" about it. Arena net made it, what would they be wondering about? The game is exactly like what they said it would be. I thought it turned out pretty good. Its not what core MMOers want but no game is.

Most NC games turn out pretty good when compared with their peers. Honestly what can stand up to most of them. Yes, they have their problems like all MMO's but nothing on the scale of games like SWG, EQII, DDO, AC2, and on and on....NC games are guilty of maybe not having the scope or depth that we as a market are expecting. But then they all lack that lol.

    EDIT

there where also many articles before release about how they would pull this off. (no subscription model) and it was always planned to be dependent on "selling" extra content and expansions. Arenanet planned it all along. They never said it would be totally "boxed" expansion based. They even said at one point they would be selling gear. (which in turn caused an uproar and they stopped talking about that) Without a sub fee and no timely expansions what would anyone expect to happen? Someone has to pay the bills....

Honestly though, I wish more companies where as up front about the numbers as NCSoft. They leave no speculation. All the numbers, subs and profit/loss are right there. You can't do that with amost any other company. For better or worse there you have it. Do you see the 10 million dollar write off for Auto Assault. Thats right, they wrote the game off.

It is always funny to read how ppl say they lose respect/interest or even do not want to play a game from this company, keep doing this and soon you will not have any MMO to play. They can not make everyone happy.

Why because someone does not have the time or money they can not play an MMO, this is ridiculous. I am a casula player myself, so from your opinion I should not play a game because I do not enough time, with this mentaly you would play pretty much alone. No one is forcing to play but that is the kind of game I like.

Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!

    A) Arena net always said they would do it. No one liked to hear about it. It has nothing to do with "if anyone can afford it" or not, it has to do with the company making some money since they are losing money every day running with no sub fee.

    B) With that sort of thinking about players, you would crash the genre. Its just bad form and semi - ignorant to tell people who don't have time to play as much as some fanatical leveling drone, to just go buy a PS. The vast majority of players play because of the communities not for the steller content. If you want good to excellent content you play PC games and consoles not these "go kill 10 rats" crap games.

They probably didn't turn the grindfest high enough for asian players.  I wasn't aware that GW was losing money. Guess so much for that genre of "free" mmorpgs lol.

It's better be hated for who you are, than loved for who you aren't.

There is nothing "bad" about it. It just upsets the purist. How it surprises anyone that the company is attempting to plug the money hole it has, is what amazes me. You would think these guys make the games for charity or something.

Hey GL, did you see my question for you here...?

What sucks is that all those people who already SPENT the time going through all the content to get the skills have their effor trivialized.

Doesn't really affect me though as I don't play the game. Kinda unfortunate to see that their business model is failing though.

I wouldn't write them off yet. I wouldn't call it "failing" at this point, I would say they need to react quickly and we are seeing that. Luckily Nightfall isn't to far away. That puts it 6 months after factions which is perfect. The real test is if they can keep it up or not.

They always said they would be selling items and armor in the beta days along with new content zones. I would not expect to see anymore "free" updates. That would just be giving away money.

  • DrSmaShDrSmaSh Member UncommonPosts: 454
It's just wrong to buy this kind of stuff (extra spells, better weapons/armour, gold). It's like playing games with cheats. Yeah it can be fun for mybe 30 min but then you get bored. That is unless you are some kind of a retard and you find walking around in imba armour with imba sword and imba spells a challange.

The first time I saw the NC store I kinda figured that they'd be selling in game stuff. This system is actually a little pricey for my tastes. I think they would be ahead to sell individual skill unlocks for 50 cents to $3 a pop. I don't really feel the need to buy all the skill when I'm usually only gonna need one or two for a specific build.

And of course, no one is OBLIGATED to buy skills. Just like with asian "item mall" games, you can play the game to get what you need, or you can just buy it.

I kind of agree.  The big advantage of GW is quick action that takes a long time to master.  Having all the skills is nothing compared being able to understand/use them right.

The game is already big into the match play and much more minimized for the "progression"  aspects.  I dunno know abotu the pricing scheme etc.  But now you can get compelx match play immediately or you can opt to go for PvE progression style play.

In a way they have to charge so that people who work through it don't feel shafted.

I dunno, all in all I think GW is wise to move away from the traditional RPG/EQ style progression treadmill paradigm and focus on more sportslike isntant action.  That is GW's strength and no other game can even come close to comparing.

I think they should completely go away from MMORPG and do waht they are doing be a sporting platform for complex team style combat matches.  In the end a game like basketball is eternal.  I think they should do a sporting platform and sell advertising.  Their "Observe" feature is awesome, its like frigging TV, I wouldn't mind if they showed a lilttle 15 sec commercial before loading.

I say keep the game free, eventually transitiion from an expansion model to an advertising model to prevent too many classes and then just tune the system until its air tight.

What this thread needs is for the uninformed idiots who don't even play GW to shut the hell up.

There is nothing wrong with the skill packs being sold...because all they do is UNLOCK skills for PvP characters...if you start a PvE character you STILL have to play through the game to get them (whether you've unlocked them before or not. And there is ABSOLUTELY NO ADVANTAGE to unlocking the skills quickly for PvP. (You can easily unlock individual skills with only a few minutes of PvPing...so in 3 or 4 hours you could have a PvP build setup exactly how you want it with no monetary cost at all. The skill packs are only for those who don't mind paying to get everything all at once. It will still be skill/strategy/build-planning that win the day in PvP, not money spent.)

I don't think GW is failing either, they get money for each new release they make (just like a normal game), it takes them 12 months to develop a chapter (shorter than most dev cycles, because most of the "game" part is already coded) and profits are profits.

The people in this thread crowing about free-games failing are the idiots here...what? you don't want your genre to become free to play...fools. You're all believing the corporate hype/crap that says running servers costs lots of money, and a game can't survive without the fee...pure garbage.

  • GreyfaceGreyface Member Posts: 390

You really have to cut them some slack.... it IS free to play after all.  I'm honestly amazed the servers are still even running.
