It takes a very long time to level in WoW and you will be poor most of the time. Try all the professions before you pick one. Try both sides before choosing. Try different servers to get a feel of the people you'll be playing with. If you don't wanna hear the garbage kids talk these days try to find a RP server. Unlike SWG - WoW is a level based game and you got to except that you wont be uberleet for a few months.
This is the most important thing to note.
WoW is all about time. if you want a powerful character, you'll need to spend as much time as the person you want to be better than. Want to be among best pvpers, skill doesn't matter, just grind long enough.
Want better gear? Grind long enough. Instances take 4-8 hours with dozens of people, in the end, only a few items drop, and guilds keep participation lists to determine who gets what. Expect to do 10-30 runs before its your turn. Expect to repeat this frequently till you get everything.
Due to severe lack of social structure and completely grind/time based method of obtaining everything in game, expect to not have much choice. You'll belong among the same people your grind/time allows. Cannot spend 6 hours farming pvp rank every day? No good pvp guilds for you.
The important difference and distinction of WoW is, that time invested is 1:1 proportional to who you are. While choosing good spawns and planning ahead makes a difference, the whole experience is directed. It's directed with lots of polish and distractions, but if you could go to DWB after one or two weeks of playing with a good guild, and do the vette for fun, WoW makes certain you cannot do that until you've played for 3-5 months. It puts finely grained obstacles that prevent you from doing so.
This, is what level based game means. You are your level. Once level no longer matters, you are your tier. Every single aspect of game makes sure you belong only and only to your number. SWG, despite having a level, never was like that.
This is why WoW will never see me. To me this is the lamest way to play, since it kills any player choice, but you need to follow linear path along every step.
This, is why most SWG players perceive WoW as boring, although WoW probably offers most content out there today. But looking at it a bit more carefully, you realize every single step is the same, and only polish changes.
Doesn't mean it cannot be fun. Lots of people apparently think so. But then again, lots of people also love console games, despite their obvious simplicity and linearity. Doesn't mean it's a good replacement for WoW.
Don't even bother with WoW. It's dumbed down so much and, when I played it, made me feel like pulling my hair out. I lasted three weeks. There's also alot of kiddies playing the game.

Look at absolute contributions, these "lots of people" are new to the genre and never experienced EQ to know that grinding = boredom. WoW did not steal every other MMORPG's playerbase, WoW brough millions of new players in.
In a year or 2, they will be seeking for more, Like I did after 1 1/2 years of EQ.... (especially after they see that burning crusades don't offer that much)

My personal opinion has always been, that with regard to MMOs, a person will only do one grind in their lifetime. Some are of course grind-happy, but most aren't.
After all, hitting level cap is fun the first time. But after that, it kinda loses its charm.
Just imagine the post-WoW MMO market. Doesn't look too pretty to me.
But I stand by the original statement. WoW IS fun. But fun is subjective. It's not fun for me, and it will most likely not be fun to people who valued what SWG was about.
Me? I play GuildWars. Is it fun? Don't know, just like playing it. And it doesn't have one single thing in common with what SWG was. Funny, how things work. But to me, the core features that make the difference are the fact, that the GW is skill not level based (yes, there's a level number, but it makes no difference), and that grind is optional for decorative items only. This is what defined pre-cu for me. The rest, apparently, didn't really matter.
I guess it depends on what type of game player you are, I played WOW, and I play SWG even in the NGE state right now I find SWG a better game then WOW. I enjoy role playing, and I can still role play well in SWG, however in WOW I found you can not role play at all. I would recommend you give the trail a try out first and see if you like it, you might enjoy it. If not then try out GW it is pretty good, as is SOR. Thank you for your time.
Damn byotch dat aint no friggn moon fool, dat be a friggn space station byotch.
Originally posted by wookiee Any former SWG players feeling the need to play ever try WoW? was it a good substitute? between game play and community was it similar to the former pre CU SWG that so many people long for?
Ive tried it several times since the nge, in fact still have a sub., but I just cant stay interested for very long. The only reaason I have maintained my sub is that there are a few of my old swg friends who do seem to like it and enjoy being able to stay in touch. But to me, there is absolutely no comparison. I have tried to understand what they see in it, but it bores me to tears.

i did the free trial and liked it...i dont think its as good as precu galaxies, but w/e...its better than nge. id probably get a sub to it, but im gonna wait a little longer for the emu
i guess ill just pass on Wow, i would have used the trial but I didnt feel like giving them my credit card number. Just incase they decided to charge me anyway and had a non working customer service number.... been there once and never again thank you very much.

And these friends don't have email, or IM's, or like just about everyone else, a MySpace account? LoL You're willing to continue paying $15 a month for a game you do not like to just talk to a few old swg buddies? So basically, WoW for you is a monthly-subscription hugely graphical chat service? I don't see much logic in that, but hey, not my money.

Their cust. service number works fine, and they don't charge the card when the 10 days are up, they just shut off the trial account. You will only get charged if you specifically go into Account Management on the WoW site and turn on the account yourself.

Try another game, like EQ2.

1. Few Bugs.
2. Content is actually designed and plentyful
3. Compared to SOE, the DEVs actually listen
Among WoWs failures:
1. Not a SCI-FI MMO
2. To many kids
3. To Simple
