Ah....shocked is pretty much my thoughts on this.

I wake up in the morning, open up my internet and the top news article is about croc hunter dead. I thought to myself WTF!!!

after reading it and asking if my gf had heard of this before (she always wakes up before me) I just kept thinking why? and just speechless.

He is just one of those guys that is excited about so many things. Witnessing him doing the things he loved was a joy. It was entertaining and educating watching him on his shows.

RIP Steve, sorry to see it end mate!

    Current: Puzzle Pirates
    Waiting: SWTOR,Aion, CO
    Played: AC, WoW, SB, EVE

Yeah like nobody saw this coming.

He made a living from poking deadly animals with sticks.

How did you THINK he was gonna check out?

If you live by the Stingray, you will die by the Stingray.

Its rare to die by a stingray.  Very rare.

RIP Steve Irwin.  He was more of a man than 99% of mmorpg players.

I agree. Steve was a great guy. I loved watching his shows. I'm just glad that he passed away doing what he loved to do. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. I will definately miss the guy. Discovery Channel is not going to be the same without him.

"See, I am hand-feeding a bear and it has not taken my arm off (yet).  Therefore bears are harmless."
"See, I am standing next to a tiger and it has not eaten me.  Tigers are just big playful kittens."
"Animals are harmless and misunderstood.  Animals rule!"

Sadly, for all his hubris, the Crocodile Hunter has missed out on raising his family.

I believe the point they're trying to get across is that if you know how to properly handle animals in most cases they are 100% safe. I can't think of one animal that just mindlessly attacks things. Usually they attack out of fear, territorial instinct or hunger.

They were indeed doing a bit on Stingray's. The problem was their technique. The cameraman was in front of the animal and steve was above the animal. The animal felt cornered and let off a warning by thrusting his barb upward. It probably didn't even mean to hit steve as it was just an instinctual action. Wrong place wrong time. I'm sure if Steve had to do it over again he'd agree he was in the wrong position to approach that particular animal.

I still find it hard to imagine how it really happened. As far as I know a Stingray does a "swipe" when he defends himself. How is someone stabbed by a "swipe"?

This caught me so off guard when I saw it on the news.  I used to love doing impression of him whenever doing something a little crazy or hell just trying to make someone laugh.  Now I think it would be in a little bit of bad taste.

It sucks that he had to get hit in the chest/heart, I mean, he might have had a fighting chance had it been elsewhere on his body.

It is good to know that the Discovery Channel is going to be setting up a foundation in his name to help with wildlife conservation.  He will be missed by many people.

There was a picture on the front page of one of the tabloids over here and he was swimming just above and slightly behind the ray. I think it was the Sun.

Of course it was acompanied by a giant CRIKEY!!, heh a fitting tribute .

Another paper said that he wanted the footage of his death to be aired, a showman to the end.

    @pheonix:

Its murder!  New online conspiracy!  Steve Irwin was actually murdered by his cameraman who broke the barb off of the stingray and stabbed him in the chest! Yes! I was the first to think it!  Pattented!

This is really sad i grew up watching him, doing amazing stuff that almost no one else wanted to.

i just heared on the news that he learned how to  wrestle a croc down or do what he's famous for at the age of 9.

That's... heartwrenching...  I, like many others, grew up watching him. I remember thinking "This guy is nuts!" when I was little, but... I never thought he;d be taken down by an animal. I'd just assumed that a great man like him would live to a ripe old age, and pass on his trade to one of his children... They should build a memorial, or something. This is... just too sad...

At the very least, he'll be remembered as a great man. His youngest may not fully remember him, but at least there are plenty of films, so he'll know, at the very least, his father's public persona. I won't assume he acted the same in private, but... He won't be forgotten...

I know everyone has to die, I just wish it didn't have to happen so soon. First John Ritter, now Steve Irwin... Ugh, why couldn't some of the vapid, shallow, meaningless celebrities have died instead? Bah...
