The Crucible (Double Standard)

KuzzleKuzzle Member Posts: 1,058

AHH!!! I have to read this dribble for my Language Arts class. It's so friggen' boring! I'm tempted to claw my own eyes out just to get out of reading it! *Screams bloody murder.*

Seriously, though, why should I be forced to read about a bunch of religious bigots? Being forced to read about religious people is like having someone hold a drill to the side of my head! It is physically painful! I swear, I've never seen the words "Church", "Hell", "God", or "Devil" written this frequently in my life.

I mean, seriously, can't I just say that it's offensive to my beliefs and be done with it? I mean, my science teacher had to give some ridiculous speech before we watched a video in there, all so we wouldn't offend the Christians. It's disgusting, because if you're following a religion, they have to bend things so as not to offend you, but if you're an athiest, they don't give a damn. I'm so sick of this double standard. I could deal with reading this damn book if so many Christians didn't bitch and moan about how Evolution's taught in schools.

The fact that all schools are willing to say "Well, evolution's just a theory. You don't have to accept it as truth." only serves to discredit evolution in the public's mind, without showing a thread of evidence against it. Whereas if I, or anyone else for that matter, were to bitch about religion, half the teachers would just stare me down like the wanted to wait until the sun went down, then slit my throat.

Ok, so don't get all pissy at me: This thread isn't about whether or not religions hold true, or whether or not evolution's true. It's about this damn double standard. I'm so fucking sick of it.

I'm glad I don't have to read that book untill next semester.  Yeah, the double standard thing is bull shit.  I think I said this before in the forums, but at school we are not allowed to bring or wear anything that could be considered "satanic" to school, such as the satanic bible or pentagrams or even wear shirts that people might think is demonic but is just artwork.  But of course it doesn't go the other way, you can wear shirts that say jesus on them and bring the bible to school, it sickens me.  Now, don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly fine with people bringing religious things to school, but to ban other people from bringing their religious things to school, just because it disagrees with your beliefs is wrong.

If you are an atheist than you are reading complete fiction.  Why do you hate fiction?

So do you suggest that schools teach children that evolution and the big bang are absolute truth?..
And by the way people bitch all day about religion... For example... kids cant pray outloud in some public schools because apparently that is infringing on atheist rights...

No, kids are allowed to pray out loud anywhere. Of course they aren't allowed to interupt the class to do so, but they aren't banned from it.  What was banned was schools forcing kids to pray everyday.  Big difference.

Oh, and about evolution and the big bang, teachers do not teach it as absolute truth, actually they make sure to state that it is just a theory about a thousand times so religious people don't get mad.

Because it's fiction that so many people regard as the truth.

On another note, I half wish I was a satanist, just so I could walk into school covered with demonic symbols, and I could nail them for it if they said anything.

Gotta think of something I could wear that would both represent that I'm an athiest, and drive them crazy because saying anything would be enforcing a double standard. If they did that, I'd sock 'em in the face. Or rather, I'd sue their pathetic asses.

(Edit: Pathetic because they enforce a double standard. Not because they're religious. Don't missunderstand me.)

You could just wear one of those black shirts that say "atheist" on 'em.  That just annoys people who are "right."

Religion was only invented as a form of controll : If noone could believe in anything to save them then the world would have gone crazy tbh.

Now we have technology we have science to save us so to many of us that is our religion :P We don't need any of that made up god crap anymore.

Um, being a definite christian I can say it's fiction, lol.

I had to read this play in one of my college courses ("Witches and Witch Hunts").

It's actually more about history than about religion. This is the kind of thing that went on in the early years of America. I could go into great detail on the whole witch-hunt thing but I won't. Think of it as a history lesson.

Or better yet, try reading the book and every time they say "witch", change it to "terrorist" and every time they say "devil" change it to "al qaeda". Proves very interesting indeed.

That being said, they're hardly trying to preach religion to you with this play, so get over it.

What I was talking about were the religious zealots that "know the absolute truth."  It annoys them.  It wasn't really logic, i was just stating a fact

I know that's what the law says... But thats why I said "some" because some schools have taken it to extremes by not allowing kids to have bibles in school or pray in school.... Those cases are almost entirely gone now... But they still happen...

Anyways it doesn't seem to me like Kuzzle is a real atheist anyways... He's more of a religious rejectionist.. Which is why he has a problem reading a book that has a couple religious words in them...

I read evolutionary theories... and watch discovery channel pretty much alllll day.... You dont see me saying... OOhh nooesss.... <rant><rant> blah blah..

Ok, what did I say? I said this debate was about the double standard, not specifically about religion. Got that? Ok, good. (This comment goes out to all of you who're focusing specifically on the "My religion is right! There should be a double standard!" crap, and wasn't specifically directed towards methane. His comment was quoted for my next comment, not this one.)

Yeah, I'm an athiest. And yeah, religion pisses me off. If you've got a problem with that, well, I don't really care. The point is, I don't want to have to read about a bunch of religious zealots with nothing better to do than kill each other. I don't care if it's history or not, it still pisses me off. I've just as much right to bitch and moan about this as Christians do to bitch and moan about evolution.

(Edit: Maybe that's because you're not being forced to read or watch them.)

Does it count that i was forced to learn evolution in every science class since primary school? And if i didn't answer questions the way they wanted them answered then i would fail...

I dont think that there is a gross double standard currently... The fact that you count ONE book that you are forced to read shows that there is a double standard bias for religion then you just show that you have a skewed view on the topic to begin with...

For every Religious text that you are forced to read children have to read about 12 texts denouncing religion..

And that is why i dont think you are a real atheist but more of a rejectionist

Yeah, I'm having a hard time seeing what the problem is.  You can't possibley believe someone is trying to shove their religious beliefs down your throat by reading having you read the Crucible, are you?  That is the last book I'd ever want someone to read as a primer to christianity.  You saw the word God, I'm guessing, and your blood pressure sky-rocketed.  Even though the story actually paints a very unflattering picture of that sect of christianity.  You used the word zealot earlier.  If this book riles up your anti-religious feelings so bad, then you really should examine your own zealotry.

Dude... You think I'm talking about just the one book? No wonder you think I'm crazy. No, I'm talking about the double standard as a whole. Xexima cited a great example at his school. I remember that when I was little, one teacher said that people weren't allowed to wear anything with Mickey Mouse or Pokemon on it, and the reason she gave was "Because they're signs of the devil." No joke. Now that bitch was fucking crazy.

Ugh... I guess I wasn't really clear about it. I didn't mean that I felt that they were "shoving their beliefs down my throat". I'm just tired of reading books with religious main characters for school. I mean, last year I had to read "Cry the Beloved Country", and, just... ugh.

Plus, there were some students doing a report, and they said some crazy stuff about how "Paganism was a religion" and about how "(Something that I don't remember) and Wicca were just subsections of it", or something. The teacher didn't even bother to correct them.

So, yeah, neither of those are great examples, but... I mean, hell, they've hosted religious functions on the school grounds before! They even advertised it on the marquee. Sure, that doesn't really show the double standard, but it does show the bias.

In the important scenes we would get bonus points for acting out parts.

Thats what I was talking about, the double standard.  Schools don't allow you to bring satanic bibles or wear anything that could be considered satanic, but they are allowed to bring regular bibles.  To say you are not able to bring either would atleast be consistant with no double standard.  Why is it extreme when they ban Bibles, but not when they ban satanic bibles?  And don't give me the "satanic bible is immoral and wrong, while the bible is moral and right argument," because if you do then you have not read the satanic bible.

I never wore Mickey Mouse or Pokemon clothing, anyway. The point was why she said we couldn't wear it. If you can just ignore why it was, because of what it was, you obviously don't care what the religious psychos do.

Believe me, there are enough sick and twisted Christians out there. Besides, good and evil don't exist. They're just elements in fairy tales. And there are plenty of "Evil" kids in school, regardless of their religion. I can think of one kid who, when I knew him, constantly had his nose buried in books about war. He publicly admitted to killing small animals for fun, and he didn't see anything wrong with that. Religion has nothing to do with whether or not someone's "evil", and if people are allowed to wear crosses in school, they should be allowed to wear pentagrams.

It's not the amount of religious texts that I'm forced to read, dude. It's that I'm forced to read any at all. It's that there are rules against things just because they don't synch up with Christianity. It's that Christmas is a nationally celebrated holiday! Bullshit.

Exactly. Not a specific religion, as he stated. And yes, when people speak of religion, it does annoy me. There's a difference between annoyance and anger, though.

So, yeah, neither of those are great examples, but... I mean, hell, they've hosted religious functions on the school grounds before! They even advertised it on the marquee. Sure, that doesn't really show the double standard, but it does show the bias.

Ok, now you're just being a dick. A Science fair isn't saying "Religion is wrong!" But, as you seem to think that that's what it's saying, you reject all science, in favor of religion? In doing so, you're going against your own religion by using the computer you're on right now? Oh no!
Yeah, it's annoying when someone acts like a dick and doesn't make a valid point, isn't it?
