The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian is a book series, not just one book, and includes the Hour of the Dragon.

Basically though, the answer is yes, but if you had to stick to only one book title, go for the Hour of the Dragon, its the one most relevant to the game's storyline

I read most of the Conan novels and most of the writers follow or conclude much of REHowards work. Robert Jordan and Lynn Carter are 2 big names in Conan lore after REHoward of course. But I must say! Avoid Carpenters writings for in some of his works he portrays Conan as a scoundrel and a coward.(Especially verses the undead.) He does not follow the true vision of REHowards works.image

Its been brought up to me recently that many people think that the REH stories are long novels like your typical fantasy writing...

Well originally they started off as a series of short stories, and as such they grab you quickly and generally dont' let up... and his books are compilations of those so they are much more friendly to people who normally don't pick up a big book and slog all they way through to the end.

Its been said that REH is the master of the "first paragraph" and I quite agree, usually just the first page of any of his stories are enough to capture your imagination, and he doesn't let go till you are done...

Yeah, I know the real Conan.

His talk show is really funny, I like it better than Leno's or Letterman's.

Well he is the REAL conan.  I think you are talking about Conan the cimmerian, who is clearly fictional.

Really really good stories so far.

    "What now?" faltered the girl.

"The plunder of the seas!" he laughed. "A paltry crew, and that chewed and clawed to pieces, but they can work the ship, and crews can always be found. Come here, girl, and give me a kiss."

"A kiss?" she cried hysterically. "You think of kisses at a time like this?"

His laughter boomed above the snap and thunder of the sails, as he caught her up off her feet in the crook of one mighty arm, and smacked her red lips with resounding relish.

"I think of Life!" he roared. "The dead are dead, and what has passed is done! I have a ship and a fighting crew and a girl with lips like wine, and that's all I ever asked. Lick your wounds, bullies, and break out a cask of ale. You're going to work ship as she never was worked before. Dance and sing while you buckle to it, damn you! To the devil with empty seas! We're bound for waters where the seaports are fat, and the merchant ships are crammed with plunder!"

The original Conan tales are magnificent, aren't they?

I would have to say, I guess, is that I'm just an old fart. The Conan books and lore used to be so much more straight forward...

Indeed.  When I first started to read them and realized that they were short stories and not novels I was at first somewhat dissapointed.  But be not fooled friends, short they maybe, but their just as indepth and involving as longer novels.  It was amazing the stories he could bring to life in several pages.

Well here is my philosophical side fav quote so far:

"There intruded vaguely a wonderment at the mad pranks of Fate, that could make the daughter of a king the companion of a red-handed barbarian.  With it came a revulsion toward her own kind.  Her father, and Shah Amurath, they were civilized men.  And from them she had had only suffering.  She had never encountered any civilized man who treated her with kindness unless there were an ulterior motive behind his actions.  Conan had shielded her, protected her, and -- so far -- demanded nothing in return."

Howard, Robert E. "Iron Shadows in the Moon."

And here is my favorite quote because deep down, I'm an evil bastard:

"'And so, farewell, barbarian,'  mocked the sorcerer.  'I must ride to Shamar, and the siege.  In ten days I will be at your palace in Tamar, with my warriors.  What word from you shall I say to your women, before I flay their dainty skins for scrolls whereon to chronicle the triumphs of Tsotha-lanti?'"

Howard, Robert E. "The Scarlet Citadel."
