The realm that captures the most has the highest bonus. Honestly, did you get all that involved with the RvR??? "Team PvP in certain zones" lol. WOW's Future: 6 million and growing. This should be a strong game for years to come. DAOC's Future: A slowly dying game, but one which will be fondly remembered. Probably true to a degree but it had its run, its still a superior game to WoW in just about every respect. The pop of DAoC is still greater then most MMO's. WOW Class System: Clean and basic (i.e., Warrior, Paladin, Priest, etc...) Simple things for simple people Its far easier to balance a few generic classes that do anything to difficult. But hey, how can 6.5 million people (most of which are Asians) be wrong? DAOC Class System: Many different, but similar classes, a little convoluted IMO (i.e., Runecasters, Eldritches, et...) Its called diversity. If you read the lore or even the class description you would understand why Hib mages are different from Mid or Alb. The fact I am typing an explaination just proves the point.

You know I once played a game which had numerous stats including optional stats such as "Adrenal Offense" and "Adrenal Defense" and if one looks at reality, there could probably be 100's of real life characteristics (stats) that you could measure a person on.
But there is the argument for simplicity. Yes, "Agility" is not the same as "Dexterity" and certainly not "Quickness", but when a MMORPG has more than 6 stats (DAOC has 8) and fully half can be useless, totally inert, for any character class, I have to wonder if Mythic could have done a cleaner job.
Just look at the starting character stat allocation of points, yet a character cannot choose a final class until level 5. What this means is you really have to envision your final class at level 1, spend your points wisely, or else risk having a gimped character at level 5. A totally awkward scenario, in opinion.
Better, would have been if they had stat allocation of the free 30 character points at level 5, after you played your fighter character up a few levels and decided, "I think I'll be a Paladin instead of an Armsman."
WOW, by comparison, is a much cleaner system than DAOC. I said "cleaner". "Better" is anyone's own opinion.
I can't think of any game in which certain stats aren't next to useless for certain characters. In WoW Spirit does next to nothing for most characters, and yet half the crafted items in the game have dorkloads of it. I love the way my Hunter's tough scorpid set looks, but if I could trade all that Spirit for Stamina ...or even Int I'd do it in a heartbeat. Have you seen the calculations on how much Spirit it takes to make a difference even in long ionstance runs? A mana tick that you can get from an inexpensive mana oil is better than hundreds of spirit.
For that matter, how much Int do your Warriers and Rogues usually go for? Doing the happy dance every time one of your mages gets a piece of cloth with Str and Agil? I don't find "lots of useless stats" to be a compelling argument. You get gear for the two or three stats you care about and ignore the rest in DAoC just like any other MMORPG. Not saying that useless stats isn't idiotic (whoever designed the way that Spirit scales in WoW needs a good swift kick in the bum), but DAoC is hardly the only game that suffers from it.
More on topic, DAoC is a better game in just about every way once you get into it. The exceptions to this general rule:
1. There are fewer polished well scripted quests in DAoC than you will find in WoW. Although the quests that are available in DAoC tend to usually have good story elements.
2. It's much harder to find pickup groups for PvE in DAoC than WoW. It's a smaller community in general. Things are better on the "classic" servers than the regular ones because there is no "/level" command on the classic servers.
3. DAoC has a steeper learning curve than WoW, so can be harder to get into. The newbie quests in DAoC, quite frankly, nearly bite (I usually skip them).
4. Many of the older classes can't solo well in DAoC, which makes problem 2 all the more glaring.
5. WoW has a better auction system.
6. WoW has more players, and a growing community.
That may sound like a lot, but those are honestly the only things I can think of that WoW has over DAoC. I'd say DAoC is superior in just about every other way in my book. I like the graphics better, crafting is more rewarding (but harder), there is a much larger variety of classes, PvP is lightyears better, DAoC has housing and WoW doesn't, the endgame in DAoC is actually fun, three "main sides" to try out instead of two, completley non-overlapping quests and content between the sides (case in point: if I have to take one more toon through stranglethorn vale I am going to hurl!!).
So basically it comes down to whether you want something with depth and a well implemented endgame, or something that will be easy to get into and easy to make friends in. Both have their plusses. Oh yeah, and if the idea of being a mindless cog in a machine during a 40 man raid for 30 hours a week give you a big stiffy, then by all means gor for WoW. You'll love it at 60.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
ive played them both and invested a lot of time in both ..
WoW is a very good game and lvling/questing is great fun from the very first lvls.PvE in wow is amazing and top end dungeons when you reach lvl 60 are very well made. only trouble i found is that to get the best equipment you need to invest a LOT of time and to do the top end Mobs/Boss you will prolly need to be in a good guild .. to get in a good guild u need good equipment .. the circle is nasty but if you gota lota spare time it can be rewardng. the pvp side of wow is quick game play and i found it lacked any real skill or much thought to win/die. there is always lots to do the crafting proffessions are really sweet and well made. but at the end of the day i got bored as all the game is really PVE based .. ( some ppl love yes aye but it wasnt for me)
Daoc is a bit dated compared to wow with regards to lvling as its lot more of a grind to lvl up. at earlyish lvls you can do rvr (they say you can start at lvl 1 but rly the lvl 1-19 area's are pretty dead) at lvl 20-24 you can enter the first populated battle grounds and thats when the fun really starts. the pvp fun is just great. at low lvls you will lack the skills and abilitys you can get at highers lvls but in the battle grounds you up against people who are in the same boat so no biggie.. the grind to the end game (lvl 50) is slow if you havent got friends to help you but due to the amount of vets playing when you tell em your new to the game most ppl will go out of there way to help ya (just dont beg). lvl 50 RvR (PVP) is just great and the best ive ever played in any game s stated above. the only sad thing is that a lot of people have left the game now and vv few new players are comming in .. put this over the next year and the comming of mythic;s new game WAR DAOC's days are numbered.
try the trial of both as stated above and see what you like the feel of .. just keep in mind WAR is comming next year and its gonna be rocking !
While I too think that DAoC is a better game than WoW, I like to play with many people at a time (sort of the "massive" part of an mmorpg). DAoC just doesn't have the numbers like it used to have in order to fulfil that.
What I recomend is picking up WoW until Warhammer Online comes out (being made by the same people who made DAoC). WAR seems like it will be the game DAoC aspired to be and should have been. While we all should be a little scepticle, I still think that WAR will blow WoW and many other mmorpgs out of the water; especially PvP wise.
The things I really miss about DAoC right now that I don't get from WoW is the great PvP ( I mean the best you can ever have ), and interesting, unique classes... although I find the priest class in WoW really well done.
I have also played both DAOC and WOW. i currently play WOW.
Honestly WOW is one of the greatest PVE game outthere. like everyone has alrdy stated with is vast amouts of dungens and areas to explore how can WOW be disliked? IN PVP!!! I love wow and all it has to offer but when it come to pvp it just lacks wut DAOC has.
I must have PLayed DAOC for 5-7 years or so (i started pre SI and went untill 4-5 months pre Darkness Rising, u do the math). any ways if this thred was created before the realse of ToA DAOC would win hands down absolutly no compotion. But for a Gammer who loved what DAOC was WoW is the closest thing to it.
This may or may not make sence to some so here like everyone has said
You like PVE and dungen raids and such go with WoW
You like doing TDs all day everyday and then getting to lvl 50 (highest lvl able when i played) and then going to ToA and doing all the MLS getting ALL the artys just to stand a chance in RVR then go with DAOC.
As advised by others, if you like PvE, then WoW is your game. If you like PvP, DAoC is your game.
WoW has a bigger community but DAoC has a very good one too. I would advise you to play in the "Classic Cluster" of DAoC. You will discover an average of 2000+ people in it all the time. Around 700 in your Realm. Not bad at all. Start playing Albion at Gareth and you will get groups and help in the low level.
DAoC is an old game with worst graphics than WoW. If you like graphics, go WoW. I think DAoC is much more complex than WoW. If you like diversity in your characters, for example, go DAoC. WoW is more simplier in that aspect. Another silly thing, for example, do you want a house? If you do, go DAoC. hehe You will understand me in time
Crafting system is much more friendly in WoW but both sucks (bah! crafting sucks in any game LOL).
PvP in DAoC beats totally WoW. PvE at DAoC is not bad at all but WoW is much better.
DAoC expansions are focus on PvP while WoW expansions are focus on PvE. At least, for the moment.
DAoC has a great Customer Support Service and "hears" the clients more than other games. Can't tell how is WoW in that aspect. Many will say I am wrong but the Classic servers are an example of it. Classic servers don't have ToA expansion neither the /level command. Players really complained about that both things. Mythic created Classic servers to fix that. Yes, they took time but they did it. Most companies never do it.
Both games will have continuity. Blizzard won't stop WoW and enither EA Mythic will stop DAoC (it's a money moker). The new incomings (Lotro, Vanguard, WAR) will drain players from both and... imho... will drain more from WoW. But both games will continue
EA just bought Mythic. Some people thinks that will ruin the game orthers don't. I just think this: EA is showing that wants Mythic to run the oeprations and just invest. If that continue to happen, then we will have a much better DAoC (Mythic just hired more developers for DAoC, and for the new coming WAR). Thinking EA didn't learn from their mistakes in the past games and start destroying Mythic, is like thinking a new management can come to Blizzard and destroy WoW. Just speculation and futurology For now, the only fact is that EA had put more money and that's never bad.
Leveling in both games is good. You don't need months of grinding (like in L2... yes I am a MMORPG addict LOL). If you play a couple of hours per day, you will be high lvl in both games in just a month and have a nice group of friends to play with.
As other people in this thread advised: grab the 14 days trial and test them.
Hmmm Am I forgeting anything? Oh well.. back to DAoC! LOL
rofl cant be any wronger about the graphics wow is great if your into cartoon like graphics but if your looking for realism daoc graphics is nice however eq2 graphics are better but still daoc graphics =nice
Originally posted by reavo DAoC is a much better game than WoW. But DAoC is empty right now.
Agreed.
WoW is not for those long term players. Unless your are content with the item-centric vibe. Check out Vanguard...sounds like you would like that game when it comes out.
If you like PVE raids, WOW is the game to play in the long run. If you like PVP, DAOC almost definately wins in the long run (though be sure to play a classic server if you don't like raids). If you like non-raid PVE, /comfort, there's not really a game that focuses on that at 'endgame'. If you want to play something for a while for fun without doing a big powerlevel run, playing WOW on a new server is probably the best bet - there will be plenty of people around doing stuff, and you won't have the overpowering gear showing up for a while. DAOC seems to be pretty empty at lower levels, and most of the people that you do see are following a patter to jet on to 50.
Just a few points on WOW which i have played for the last 2.1/2Years ,good simple game to start easy leveling 1-60, that's where it start to change. You will need to spend a lot of time in 5-10 groups in dungeons to get your gear. After that you will need to be in a good reasonably hard core raiding guild (40 man raid) to get your tier 1 ( Molten core) & tier 2 ( Blackwing Lair) armor sets( Have my tier 1 & part of my tier 2) Note some of these guilds will have certain expectations of their members, such as attendance (which they need to in order to ensure 40 ppl online at one time). Attendance expectations can be as high as 6 nights a week with 2 weeks holidays. Aask questions, do they have a charter & rules of conduct? & ask yourself are you willing to to make the committment they are asking. This of course is only if you want the high end game armor sets.
It is also only fair to note that the expansion will reduce most of these instances from 40 man to 25 man.
Can't give a opinion on Daoc as I have have only just started the game myself, so far i can say Daoc is a much more in depth game referring to character spec's & professions.
Hope this helps & you enjoy whatever your decision leads you too.
daoc is much better I tried wow, SWG, EvE and within the week I was playing Daoc again. Y even play anything else its the highest rated game when its not rated by fanbois.
Originally posted by frankyz669 There is a problem in society these days. This problem is that most people are woeful pathetic when it comes to making decisions for themselves. They are susceptible to advertising, marketing, and to a lemming herd mentality. This is the only explanation I can come up with for the reason that WoW has 6 million subscribers. Wake up! WoW isn't good. Just because you are told to like it, doesn't mean you should. Just because you are told that a war is righteous, you shouldn't believe it. Just because you are told that 2+2=5, you shouldn't follow the masses. DAoC is a far superior game in all and every aspects, except for the fact that there is about 5.9 million less dunderheads playing. DAoC provides better customer service, has better PvP, and the PvE is comparable. Graphicswise - which doesn't mean as much when it comes to gameplay - WoW is better. So, choose wisely young one. Choose with your own mind and thoughts and what you think is best for yourself.
Ok, I guess DAoC sucks then. So i don't believe you that DAoC is any good.
For DAoC f.a. you will hardly find anyone played it for 4 months or more, who says "DAoC sucks" whithout telling you why. i´m imagining, WoW has released at the time when DAoC normally was released, and DAoC after it, when WoW normally released. However DAoC is aged. Many gamers who played it for a long time are searching for a new MMOG with same long time fun, because they have seen, felt it all.
The DAoC PvP-system pawns every other MMOG, Guildwars inclusive. Yesterday, today, and - my prophecy - in near future, because in WAR are only two factions.
One word to PvE: The 40man-raids in WoW are kind of fun. The reasons, why i stopped voting for it in my guild´s forum - a leading guild (greetings to Amok/Alleria) - this chatless robotlike event. you have to be concentrated, yes, with all your addons running with you. No matter if you rock or wiping in an instance. Each new boss demands to be tested - several wipes occure and how long do you think does a regathering and buff-period last? It is a real YEAH-feeling, when a boss finally kisses the floor, the first or second time. But there are some of the 40 guys who also want to have its loot. Same in DAoC. In DAoC the Bosses are much easier - some would say "for idiots, just zerg it". For me, when i have time on weekend to play, i also have time to drink 2-3 beer and want to chat. The bosses in WoW 40er instances are far more challenging, and you need equipment. The higher the 40er instance, the better the equipment.
One year ago someone in the german DAoC-forum said: In DAoC I am camping and farming for what? For RvR. In WoW I am camping and farming for what? For nothing.
I definately have to agree with some of the posters before, its best to try out the 14 day trials for each of those games before deciding which one to attach yourself to. Once you figure out what is more fun to you then play that. All of the replies are based off personal opinons and experiences, its probably best to get in there and try both the games and see what your experience is like. Both games are highly rated MMoRPGs so you can't go wrong with either one. Both have monthly fees and much to offer.

Well, here it is so you can make your own choice:
WOW Graphics: Cartoonish, but clean and colorful
DAOC Graphics: Drab and dated, but realistic. Very nice weapon and armor graphics
WOW Community: Lots of teens, but always folks around to group with.
DAOC Community: I think most of it's hiding out in the upper levels. A slowly dying game, IMO.
WOW Class System: Clean and basic (i.e., Warrior, Paladin, Priest, etc...)
DAOC Class System: Many different, but similar classes, a little convoluted IMO (i.e., Runecasters, Eldritches, et...)
WOW Combat: Fast and clean, very fun.
DAOC Combat: A little slower, but not much.
WOW Stats: Simple and sensible. No need to allocate stat points, though you do get "Talent Points" later for customization and these can be reallocated for a price (i.e., you cannot gimp yourself).
DAOC Stats: Too many useless stats. Play a warrior and Empathy and Intelligence are nearly useless to you. In fact, they could have gotten rid of two or three of DAOC's stats maybe. (Do we need Quickness and Dexterity, or just one? Can we choose one and call it "Agility"?)
WOW Spell Casting and Graphics: Colorful and well-thought out spell system.
DAOC Spell Casting and Graphics: Okay. Everything seems to be blue or green.
WOW Game World: Huge world with separate starting racial zones (village and nearby major city). Lots of dungeons and mysteries.
DAOC Game World: Divided among the three factions (Albion, Hybernia, and Midgard). Smaller, but more realistic. One major city in each and which are now nearly empty. Expansions have added more towns to stop and repair at.
WOW Loot System: Excellent and dynamic. Money divided evenly, more or less. Magic items are rolled for automatically. Non-magic items go to looter.
DAOC Loot System: Pretty good, especially for its day. Money divided evenly, more or less. Some items go randomly into party member's inventory, not necessarily to person who did actual looting.
WOW Downtime: Minimal
DAOC Downtime: Not as fast as WOW, but low. Maybe DAOC pioneered short downtime in these 3D MMORPG's.
WOW PVP: Team PVP (Horde vs. Alliance). Active on PVP servers, mostly consensual on Normal servers.
DAOC PVP: Team PVP in certain zones, PVE in most zones.

The above are my opinions, of course.

That is why you do not put any points into stats that you do not need. One could argue what is the point of quickness to any of the caster classes? Strength doesn't do much either outside of allow you to carry more.
There are not useless stats, but stats that only are important to certain classes. This is hardly new to the rpg genre whether it is PnP, computer, or mmorpg.
The classic server for DAoC is packed up, not much less than a WoW server. Your only going to be playing on 1 server so just pick the classic server for DAoC and the numbers will be alright. Having played both and not hating either I can fairly say that DAoC is a superior game with not so good graphics (it came out in 01). So if graphics is your thing go WoW. The game play and the PvP system own in DAoC, just remember go classic server. Log on to their main website and the numbers of how many people are playing on each server are on there on the right, check it out.
Hello all.. I played DAoC for years and played WoW for the past year off and on. My take on the two... DAoC definatly a classic and I feel its tried and true to its RPG roots. Granted the servers are less and less populated, but the players in those servers seem to want to play the RPG side more. The graphics are dated more but are definatly more real and gritty than WoW.
WoW is more colorful, eye candy type of a game. The Players there are more for socializing and grinding their way to the top. Most of them are normally out of char, and to me that takes away from the game.
so if you want the eye candy go with WoW and if you want the a gritty, indepth character system, go with DAoC.
Thats my $2.00 ( 2cents aren't what they used to be)

Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Oh & quick note on graphics daoc has a new engine which imo surpasses wow.
Daoc is more realistic & wow being a little more toonish ( so depends on your liking) but really comes down to what the game is all about.

Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!
Both games have their problems.
One word to PvE:
The 40man-raids in WoW are kind of fun.
One year ago someone in the german DAoC-forum said:
In DAoC I am camping and farming for what? For RvR.
In WoW I am camping and farming for what? For nothing.
Let's face it, if it didnt have 'Warcraft' in the title, not as many people would have been interested when it first came out.
WOW's Future: 6 million and growing. This should be a strong game for years to come.
DAOC's Future: A slowly dying game, but one which will be fondly remembered.
The above are my opinions, of course.
Because it is late and i'm going to bed soon I just want to say 1 thing.
You're a noob and know nothing about DAoC, worthless stat points; ARE YOU HIGH?

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
