Yeah, but I would say entertainers aren't a good example of smart people when it comes to money. How many sport stars or entertainers have any money left when they retire. You hear all the time about them being broke. Come to think of it, I can't think of many rich people who aren't entertainers or sport stars. These people who are buying the PS3s aren't rich people who can't wait for an item. Most of them are addicts who got caught up in the hype (or people trying to compete with the "jones") most wealthy people don't need to worry about that. But how do you know? These are individual cases, and we don't know who the buyers are. My guess is they are either entertainers or sport stars. Or if they aren't, I guess evolution is just following its course again. No harm in that. I often think that a society which tries to protect people from their own mistakes is acting as an evolutionary force against intelligence.
Here is the list of the top 10 richest people in America. Not a single one is an entertainer or sport star. Actually for the first time this year to make the list of the top 400 richest americans you needed to be worth 1 billion dollars or more. The only person on the top 400 list that is an entertainer/sport star is:

I think you are totally missing the point. There are more then enough people that are part of this MMORPG.com community that can afford to do stuff like that. It's not a question of one's ability to afford it. We are questioning these people's intelligence. There is a big difference between plopping thousands of dollars down on something that is considered rare or a collectable item. Versus spending thousands of dollars on something that isn't rare that eventually everyone who can afford to, will eventually have. Also you have to consider first gen consoles have a bad track record for life expectancy.
Let me break it down to you like this:
Spending x amount of cash for a car that is in going to be limited to something like 100 produced in the whole world and never anymore. That would be a smart investment. Rare or Collectable items have incredible return value when kept in good or mint condition.
Spending x amount of cash for a console. That can and probably will break on you within first year of owning. Plus isn't unique or special. Because within 6 to 8 months everyone that wants one will eventually be able to get. That has no collectors value. Is not a smart investment.
Smart investing and Bad investing is the difference between being Wealthy and being Rich. Rich is a status that can be lost pretty easily. While wealth is something that is handed down generation to generation.

q. who buys these ps3's in ebay costing thousands of bucks?
a. the taiwanese
q. why would they pay such a high price for it?
a. they buy it, dismantle it, reverse-engineer it, copy it, make a by-pass to the anti-piracy thing-a-majig installed in it, make hundreds of thousands of units from it including millions of copies of pirated games, then re-sell the boot-leg units and pirated games for a quarter of the price of the original. spending thousands and making millions is good business.

That is just unnecessary, I don't care how much money you have.

Could it still feed everyone after the populations of third world countries have increased by, say, a factor of 100? Starvation and disease are nature's population control mechanisms; I doubt we could survive just removing them. Its not actually as bad as it sounds since people would have less children if they lasted longer (the children). Most need children to provide to them, if they'd get more charity they might actually go to school and learn about overpopulation and birth control (though some religions have weird attitudes against birth control, like the catholics). But as long as they are needed in the family farm not offering enough food they can't have that education. But in the end it is just how people want it. Poor people suffer and keep the prices low for us and us feeling good that we aren't them with our computers and obiesity .
Well I'm glad someone can afford that because there's no way I could. I think the retail price is actually a bit steep for my funds. I'll have to wait until the price comes down, if it ever does.
If I wasn't so lazy and If i had no job and such, i'd be standing out there too, or, if i was smart, i'd just pay a bunch of people to sit out there for me. Seriously, pay some tool $300 to sit there for a few days, he purchases it, you pay him/her price of console + payment sell for more on ebay, you do this with 10-20 people and you just made a shitload of money.
Also, i'm sure a lot of these people have their friends shill bid the price as high as it can go and then sell to the closest guy who isnt' their friend. If you don't know what schill bidding is or is it schilling bidding or whatever, it's when you have a friend or you make a 2nd account and you bid on your own items to raise the price, essentially you are creating fake demand which increases the price.
I had a friend who used to do it, i thought it was unethical, but he has no problems, considering he writes college essays for people as a business.
Oh well, i guess I should have paid someone to do that for me, next time PS4 comes out, i'm doing that. haha.
