I just find it ironic that WoW is not listed #1 on the top rankings on this site. People scored it as 8.1. [edit] So, why do you feel WoW isn't #1 on this site? I've concluded it's because WoW players have no time to experiment with other MMOs or games (hence a recent article I've read on gamasutra about how WoW has possibly dented game sales). Please give reasons why not just 'because you think it sucks'. Thanks!
[original] I suspect its just a bunch of haters that already have a favorite gimped MMO they play like City of Heroes or something other 100% instanced, repititive grind. Really, this makes the list seriously suspect in my eyes. I don't think it's accurate at all. WoW is #1 MMO out there. It's no where near perfect the end game can be sickening. But that journey to 1-59 was unparelled for me and I'm sure there's millions of others that feel the same.
So- is the rating system on this site rigged? Perhaps they should just list the top MMOs according to their market share. Cause really, that's what the #1 MMO is. The most popular.

WoW is amazing if you're a newbie to MMO's. For vets like me it offers very little new to be excited about. So why would I rate it any higher than all the rest EQ clones?
EQ clones??.....
The only MMO's you can accurately say have been cloned are korean.
Yes, the journey from 1-59 was great fun, but so was watching Finding Nemo with my niece. I'll wager that Finding Nemo made more money in DVD sales than Goodfellas, Scarface and Apocalypse now combined. Does that make it a better movie? No.
Is Mcdonalds the best restaurant on the planet? Is a Hyundai a better car than a Jaguar? Need I say more?
DUDE Zerocool....that is the funniest fucking sig movie I have ever seen. I was laughing my ass off. Nice job. Looks like you already have quite a few posts here, but it was the first time I had ever seen it.
The ratings are how people who are registered on this site feel about
that mmorpg. Personaly when I first bought eve at its release I waded
through lots and lots of bad ratings. I didn't feel that I had to
follow with doing what I was told.

In sales it's the #1 out for the time being at least it was released at the right time had tons of hype felt well put together and was very easy fto play. It being so easy is also what's killed it for alot of people it generally lacks innovation and is too soft for hardcore players so hasn't went over well with that crowd of people. I'll agree the game felt fun 1-60, but ended/declined immediatly afterwards and it was only fun the first time around if you ever played levels 1-60 over again it's not nearly the same experiance because the quests feel like chores the first time the storyline was new and somewhat resembled what you might expect from a standard rpg, but just like most rpg's you can only play them one or twice before tossing them aside to collect dust. Unfortunately for blizzard they made the questing more benifitial than grinding so starting over feels like a real chore toppled with the lack of twinking the game offers. One of the reasons WoW doesnt have such a great score is because it tried to appeal to alot of people, but just didn't do so successful for a good duration of time so players left feeling a bit empty instead like they'd wasted there money time and effort on a subpar game. The game is just so mediocre in depth that it's hard to be a hardcore player and enjoy it for long periods of time. Another thing that hurts WoW's rating is it's customer service department it's hard to feel like your concerns and questions are really being taken seriously when you receive mostly automated responses it makes you feel like jeeze did they even read what I said? Not even touching upon other customer services aspects. EVE and Guild Wars more or less live up fully to what players expect from them. Guild Wars might not last a super long time either, but you can pick it up or drop it at any time and not have to worry about it because it's a one time fee which is a big part of it's appeal and it's really quite a decent game the story is actually quite good probably the best I've come cross in a mmo due to it's well done cutscenes. You can also play the game over again and enjoy it too better than WoW for example.
it isn't is because the rating system is based around categories.
Whichever games gains the most across the array of categories gets the
higher ratings. WoW loses points on graphics and community compared to
it's rivals, if you compare that to guild wars where it also gains a
loss for community Guild Wars does better mainly as it has gained more
on it's graphics. Oh and also WoW isn't there because of multiple
entries for certain games.
WoW is the MMO equivalent to PoP music, just because the majority buy it, dosent mean its the best
I agree with PlanoMM. It's only the most popular game out there, not the #1. There's a lot of good reasons it's not #1 and that's because this game's particular audience is children. Its easy to use interface and simple to follow quest line make it perfect for that 12 year to bum money off of you. There's no indiviuduality, no true freedom. To me, it's all based on either Raids or PVP because there's absolutely nothing to do other than get someone else to play so you can get them through Deadmines for better gear. Even then, what are you going to do? Nothing, so wave your lvl 60 good-bye because you'll most likely drown in boredom. However, I admire Blizzard for their success, and the "easy to get started" feel makes you feel like you've found a game you can get up there with the "big boys" even if you're 12 years old. City of Villains by the way, is the ultimate repetition, haha!
(by the way, it's based on ratings, not how many accounts it has going)
That is my opinion, I feel that your complaining about something that isn't important.

Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!
I love that vajuras "suspects its just a bunch of haters" as any good rating system is based on the "haters" and the "likers". That is how you get accurate ratings.
In my opinion, it's not #1 for the simple fact that it doesn't bring anything new to the table. I played it for quite a long time myself and found that I was constantly making new chars after I got to the endgame because it, quite simply, bored me to tears. But, I kept playing because my friends were new to mmorpgs and they loved it.
The ratings system tests a game -overall- up against people who love the game AND people who hate it. If there are more people that hate it than who like it, then it is obviously not a #1 game.
It can't exactly be bias with there being MANY more people registered on WoW than any MMORPG ever made before it. If anything you'd think the fanboys would be able to tip the scales in their direction - if it were truly a decent game.
I agree that WoW is popular, but not so much because of the content. Rather becaus "everyone" else is doing it and it rides heavily on the Warcraft brand, also it was advertised a lot when it was released. It is also easy to master so it suits very well players who don't want anything too complex (ie. teens and preteens). So as a game it isn't too shabby but as a product it is well made (a bit like Coka Cola, it isn't the best tasting cola, but its still "the cola").

"Lick My Weapons"
I'm probably going to download the trial today, so I guess I'll find out why it isn't up with DAoC and Guild Wars. Loved GW, don't like DAoC much. Maybe it's my old computer.
My guess for some of the reasons would be that the Graphics are toony and lame, I heard the community is very immature and "nooby," and that it is supposed to be a copy of most every other MMO on the market. The end-game scares me, I hate short online games. That was the main problem with GW, it didn't last long. And I'm expecting horrendous customer support, which I expect from every "big" game.
But it's worth a try. I would rather have a crowded, immature community than play a game with 300 people online at a time. And toony graphics are better than bad graphics. I've tried or played most of the "top" games, so if there is a reason besides just a handful of "WoW Haters" I'll find it.
