Just because a game has millions of players doesn't mean it's a great game.

McDonalds serves millions of people a day worldwide.  How many of those people argue it's the best restaurant in the world?  Probably not many.

Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

Yeah true my best friend jsut called me up and asked me when I plan to resubscribe. I told him about the ratings on this site and he said, 'who is mmorpg.com?' I also tried to get him to play BF2142 with me and even offered to send him a free copy. he politely declined claiming he need to improve his honor ranking before burning crusade hits lol.

So yeah, my curiosity is fully satisfied now. most WoW players are simply hooked with 0 time to play other games (also read an article on this some census blames WoW for lack of game sales). Sounds sorta ridiculous but its the sad truth.

6,000,000 voting a game as an 8 gives an average of 8, while 100,000 people voting a game a 10 gives a game an average rating of 10.

It doesn't matter one bit how many people are voting on a game. All that matters is the average of what those people are voting (though it's possible the rankings here have some kind of algorithm in them to take into account various other things, such as number of people voting).

Anyway, WoW is good but not the greatest blah blah blah.

I really just wanted to post and say that the sig of the guy on the first page with the Lord of the Rings spoof is freaking hilarious. I've never seen it either and really did lol. :)

As a fan, it would be natural for you to question why a game you enjoy is not in the top of the lists. As someone who no longer enjoys the game, it doesn't suprise me in the least that it isn't.

World of Warcraft really is not a well designed game. It has numerous flaws that severly hinder the actual game play.  I could go into a lengthy explanation on what I believe the errors are, but it's been stated time and time again by numerous player and, in the end, it's really all just a matter of personal preference.

Nothing stays on top forever. WoW was destined to fall in ranks. it's the nature of the beast.  You feel it should be in the top ten. I feel it should be kicked to the curb. It's all in what we like. image

I don't think it's designed incredibly great either and I've noticed several flaws while playing also.  I can understand why it's popular but being popular doesn't mean it's the best game out there.  Everyone's entitled to their own opinion when it comes to games though.

Really, this makes the list seriously suspect in my eyes. I don't think it's accurate at all. WoW is #1 MMO out there. It's no where near perfect the end game can be sickening. So- is the rating system on this site rigged? Perhaps they should just list the top MMOs according to their market share. Cause really, that's what the #1 MMO is. The most popular.

Here is the reason: 90% of the people who play or have played WoW don't even know about this site. The company that runs EVE online goes as far as to put news items on their front page telling people to come here and vote. They also sticky forum posts telling people to come here and vote. It's just that simple.

Plus the "players" in EVE that are currently using the interactive screensaver have lots of time to browse the web while they "play". I have never done so much around the house as when I was "playing" EVE, it's a fantastic way to get some chores done and catch up on your TV watching.

Well, WoW is the best of the worse games of it's kind. Of this I have no doubt.

When Vanguard which is anxiously anticipated by many, comes out then WoW will take it's place where it belongs, in the bottom.

If Vanguard holds true to what it wants to do then WoW doesn't have a prayer. WoW lacks many of the things Vanguard expects to put out. Housing, Mounts at early levels, unlike WoW who you have to wait til you're an old man to get, better professions and skills, missions that actually pay more then a few pcs of copper. An economy unlike Wow's virtually non-existant since you don't make any nice money.

Well, the list is quite long, too long to post actually. But you get the idea.

Thank you for your post I'm reading up on Vanguard. I actually found your list of negatives very interesting and detailed. That's the sort of post I wanted to read- why you feel WoW blows/belongs at #1. Not that 'it jsut plain sucks' like some people posted. howevver I do understand a lot of people probably hate typing so they may come across more blunt then intended

[edit] yeah looks pretty good looks super ambitious though I hope they can pull all that off

WoW started out as a fairly great rush of a game then the title took over when the never improved
the game they just added more of the same so now WoW stands for Worn out Waist of time!

Don't pull on a Dragons tail you never know where it's been!!

I don't know if the OP was smoking crack when he posted this, or if he just doesn't see the hypocrasy inherent in calling other games "100% instanced, repetitive grind".

Christ on a cross man, WoW is mind numbingly repetitive, and the whole game is revolved around grinds. Money grind, Rep grind, honor grind, quest grind, the list goes on. WoW sucks that's why it's not #1.

This may come as a shock to some, but many people are sick to death of the simplistic repetitous game play that WoW offers and are offended by all the clones and devs who wish to model their games in WoW's own image.

Noticed I mentioned City of Heroes which is indeed near 100% instanced missions which feels a lot more repetitive than WoW. So, if you didnt play CoH/CoV then yeah I might come across as a freebasing junkie. In CoV I fought longbow from level 1 to the cap. All the missions were kill x, kidnap x, rob bank, and find x. LEveling was like 5x slower then WoW plus it included debt and no rested bonus. Imagine, staring at the same ole tile sets in an 'instance' for months from 1-50. Only a Level 50 that leveled the honest way knows my pain

[edit] your post is fairly good beyond that. I think you should elaborate on 'quest grind' cause every RPG is pretty much quest driven I thought. unless you mean it sucks having to kill x of creatures looking for x number of hairs or whatever that has low chance to drop. yeah that was gay! but some quests were really awesome and well done. Yeah, it was a grind I suppose but I had so much fun I didnt notice. However my bud hated them all I think so your comment is valid nevertheless... but my point is I'd much rather grind on quests that give good xp then grind on the same old mobs over and over. So quest grind is much better than mob / hunt grind to me

Either way, when it comes down to the OP's question, EVE and GW are both very unique and innoventive MMORPGs.  WoW's quest system was somewhat unique when the game released (although it wasnt really unique, just more elaborate than most MMORPGs), but now that has been overshadowed as other MMORPGs are improving and WoW has been doing...  I dunno.  What have the updates been like for WoW?  Do they just keep adding better gear and new instances to get that gear in?  What else is new?

excellent post not sure how I missed this. You hit it on the nail too. I think we both have favorable memories of WoW cause we both quit at 60. The end game for WoW really bites. So that is another good explanation.

The hardcore MMOers rate WoW down cause of the end game. I must admit I found CoX more replayable then WoW. Even though end game was 0 and horrid. Still, it was fun to create new heroes and roleplay and give them bios.

Its not that simple.  I never bothered with Eve while I played WoW, but I knew of this site.  After  Icanceled WoW I tried out Eve because it was rated on this site and had a lot of buzz.  I tried out Eve, canceled my suib after a couple months because it wasn't my cup of tea and rated it higher than WoW because it is a better desigend game.

I didn't come here from Eve, I went to Eve from here and agreed with the ratings.  I do not expect all good games to be gaems I like personally though.

becouse WoW players are to busy playing... They just dont got the time to vote! *Gotta grind, gotta quest, gotta lvl, need... better... gear!* :P
  • lucasa819lucasa819 Member Posts: 5
That is odd considering the amount of people that are WoW junkies.  Maybe the majority of people that are playing this game don't have time to vote for it on this site because they're too busy playing.

I think that is not the n1 because it sucks :)

Really its not original its the same that lineage2 with more marketing/merchandasing etc... so... it suks... sorry about this but I think its stupid pay 50$ or € for this game and then 12 more every month... you got lot of games that are more funny for lot of less money, so nothing new, no customization, your character is the same that all the other players, same skills, same faces all the same... no freedom, nothing interesting, just a poor lineage2, I really prefer L2 in front of wow, at least graphics are better.

WoW got popular for a reason.  If you played it too end game, you have too admit it has some of the best game mechanics for any MMO out their.  Reason why its not on the ratings? I'd have to say, simply most of the WoW players who bother with the forums, stay with WoW forums on the official site and do not bother with mmorpg.com, mmorpg.com seems too be a website for gamers in exile looking for new games or complaining about the old ones.  Plus, alot of players just talk trash like this quote above with arguments that have little to no intelligence behind them and little gaming experiance with the game they are talking about, now 90% of any player commenting off this saying im full of it, is the person who says they have 3 level 60s and turn around and say the game is complete trash. Which that in itself makes no sense to invest that much time in a game and says it sucks after it.  I like World of Warcraft, after SWG's NGE I switched over to play it, and its a great game.  It diserves to be on the ratings, I know 5 million players who would agree.  Not a WoW fanboy, WoW definetly isn't the best MMO and does get old after awhile, but people aren't giving credit to where its diserved and saying it sucks for no real reason at all.  Just my opinion, Happy gamingimage

What do you mean when you say game mechanics?  I think the holy trinity, tank and spank game mechanics they copied from Everquest are completely stupid myself.

No GW campaigns are no longer put up separately.  They only have the original up now.
