playing eq2 and two worlds
I have nothing against people who are against pvp. What does irk me are people who are out to prove how 'hardk0re' they are by calling anyone who doesn't want to fight them, a carebear.
Just because you're awesome at pvp on the internet doesn't make you a bigger and more manly person.
A level 1 who runs when a level 50 attacks him isn't a carebear, but is practicing common sense. For the high level player to call him a carebear is just an attempt to "still win".
Two players ganging up on another aren't carebears, but are practicing basic tactics. For the losing player to call them carebears is just a cop-out in order to try and nullify his loss.
I much prefer pvp mmo's myself, and I've found that those who cry carebear are usually scrubs who can't accept that others don't want to play by their rules.
I was a carebear in GW for using pin down+poison+bleed, I was a carebear in Eve for using target jammers and warp scramblers, I was a carebear in Lineage 2 for using stun, I was a carebear in shadowbane for tracking down and revealing assassins, I was a carebear in Ryzom for using armor piercing actions against heavy armored players, I was a carebear in CoX for playing CoX.
I totally agree with the above post. Obviously the first post was simply someone wanting to start a flamewar but Sal broke down the points well and pretty much hit it on the head.
I enjoy pvp and my best friend doesn't, we play COH and when I want to pvp I go to a area to do so and it doesn't keep him from playing the game because he can simply do misisons with others during that time. Funny thing is for him, it isn't about losing or anything like that as he plays a controller fire/kin which basically is the most powerful lvl 50 in pvp in the game its a personal preference.
I love when people consider themselves "hardcore" because they want open pvp, its a game no more and no less there is nothing hardcore about it. If there was such a huge demand for a completely open pvp/looting game we would have droves of them to fill that demand. We don't because its a niche part of the MMO genre. Maybe that is why we see so many flames by these supposed hardcore pvpers since they don't have a game to gank and generally ruin the experience for everyone else all the while proclaiming how leet they are and looting lowbies til their hearts content.
Peace
I am a Carebear myself, but let's me tell you.
See, sometimes poor design enforce PvP, anyway, it is slightly the case in CoV.
I see all types of PvPers around while I was doing my PvE chores inside the PvP-zones. Each time someone call me a carebear, they never got what they want, which was to kill me. I might be relatively unskilled in PvP, but killing a brute who just activate Unstoppable or transform into an electric imps, it is just nearly impossible for 99% players. So they didn't get their kills and I walk out. Later I hunt them with a few PvPers and they where all angry.
On the other hand, some peoples ASK me for PvP. Sometimes I didn't see they talk to me and I start doing my stuff faster, kinda afraid. However, a little later at worst(time I see them speak with me, when I see a toon walking and running around me, I might forget to check chat for a few moments), if they ASK me, I will grant them, once I am done with my PvE chores a fair fight, and no, I won't run, I will stand my ground. I will be happy dying(althought I will give all I can to fight in a straitforward battle) since they didn't screw my PvE chores. Hehe, some even goes as far as escorting me to get the duel afterward! I mean, can you see that! I was thinking it was awesome and even if they beat me in the duel later on, I have a great experience and I certainly think they did!
Moral of the story, the only peoples who kill me in PvP, are peoples who ASK me for a battle, not those who jump me. Fleeing is quite easy in CoX! So you want to kill a Carebear? Ask them if they would want a duel with you instead of attacking them, you would be surprised, but most will say yes, maybe after they complete a quest however. And IF they say no, accept this answer and ask them to let you know if they ever change mind, you want to be the first to fight them with a few winks. Carebears as you call them, they care about something else in the game, if they see that you are not endangering this, they will prove very nice afterward, they won't give you an easy fight, but just the fact they accept the fight and won't run is a LOT.

I don't mind being called a carebear... I prefer PvE to PvP. That doesn't mean i am not a competitive person. In a game without open PvP you still compete with the other players. Competition for who has the fattest loot is still competion... just on a more level field. All the players are obtaining that loot from completing the same content.
I run a gaming team that I founded 7 years ago. We formed as a Mechwarrior team and competed heavily at the highest levels of organized play, winning first place in a league of 60+ teams every month for an entire year. When they shelved that series a few years ago, we moved on to Battlefield, both of these are games where the deciding factor is player ability and team tactics, rather than level and gear. I absolutely love the competition and really don't mind losing my fair share of matches... Of course I would prefer to win, but even in a loss you can learn a lesson and gain valuable experience.
It is because I enjoy this type of competition that I don't like PvP. I don't want to win a battle simply because I have better gear or I am a higher level. I certainly don't want to lose for the inverse reasons. I want my ability and experience to decide the outcome. I don't think that can ever really happen in a game with dice rolls... even when the two players are close in level and gear. It seems to me that if someone was afraid of real competition, but still wanted the feeling that comes from it, they would participate in heavily weighted PvP battles... or spend months twinking their character, intentionally stalling their progression at the top level in PvP range bracket. It also occurs to me that only "hardcore" PvPers do those things.
So I don't like PvP... I still respect other peoples right to disagree. I don't start posts harrassing PvPers, I don't call people names for not wanting to play the same way as me. If it makes the dude feel a little bigger to call me a carebear.. that's fine with me. It is, after all, just a video game reference. I promise not to cry about it.

I love these treads.... Carebears VS. Hardcore <so they think>
this guys interpretations of hardcore players is rediculous.... im not even going to start bashing some one whos brain doesnt seem to be working today.....
Oh and for my final note im a carebear and i love a challenge and the consequences taht come with failer.... so maby before you speak you might want to ask some questions about what a carebear really is seeing how you have absolutly no idea..
A killwhore is someone who would rather gank newbies than fight a real challenge.
A killwhore is someone who isn't happy unless he can be causing someone else pain.
A killwhore is someone who isn't happy if his victim isn't destroyed and driven out of the game.
A killwhore thinks he is better than someone else because his levelled character enables him to effortllessly gank those who have not yet had the chance to level...and won't get that chance, either.
A killwhore *knows* he sure does!
A killwhore does not prefer to realize that griefing someone 10 levels under you is not "player skill".

Carebear.
1. Somone that farms just to stand in a safe zone just to show off gear and items.
2. Somone that stands in a safe zone and smack talks everyone.
3. Somone that plays a PvP game and then starts to complain about being killed and tries to get the company running the game to make changes so that PKers get repercutions for killing.
4. Somone that you kill and he/she starts sending you nasty hate tells even though they know they are on a game that lets you be killed by another player.
5. Somone or guild that does more fighting on forum more then they do in game.

This is where you are most wrong. The term
PvP is exclusive to RPGs. In RPGs combat effectiveness is governed by
level, attributes and gear more than player skill. games where player
skill is the most important factor are call their PvP "multiplayer". If
you want player skill to determine the outcome of events, you are
playing the wrong type of game. I would suggest the battlefield
series.

Amen to that! hehe I always laugh when some LEETIST tries to say he has more skill, thats a joke... he usually just has more friends, equipment, or lvls, etc. Nice post Salv.
