haha I did quit playing the game, and so has a lot of other people. I'm not going debate the issue as to if it's right or wrong, but what I am pointing out is NC Soft has missed the mark on what could have been a great game, and the private servers have only shown their short sightedness on what consumers want. As for you last comment, I'm 36 and don't live with my mother, and I am a working person who didn't have time to waste on a stupid grind just so I can brag to other 14 year olds that I"m uber. The private servers brought fun back to the game. Nah, sorry about that. I wasn't implying that you were 14 and you needed to get a life. I was just trying to make a joke on the fact that here we are, probably adults (I'm 39 so hello 40) and we are arguing over what most "average everyday" people would find laughable. (like my father may he rest in peace... "you play what?" )
I tend to wonder how non gamers would react if they were a fly on the wall in these forums.

I don't play L2 any more but all I can say is its about time. Its a fun game, I understand not wanting the grind but really if someone spends that much time making a game they don't want someone else profiting. And the actual L2 servers could use a boost in population.

People play on private L2 servers because of the RATES. The subscription fees mean diddly squat. L2 is an extremely competetive game, and to be competetive you need to get to the top. If you join a good clan and play six hours a day every day for a whole year without botting or Ebay'ing, you MIGHT be able to reach the level cap.
There are a ton of ways that the grind could be made easier but the sad fact is that Korean society is a lot different than western society; they like it how it is and NCsoft could give a shit about what the rest of the world think because a hundred thousand NA subscribers are pocket change.
NCsoft should wake up and give their subscribers the option to play on higher rate servers but they never will because their north american side project means jack in the big picture.

Of course it's legally wrong, so it is always going to be a very shady thing to do. I expect, as more people get tired of game company abuse or neglect, it will become more common and thus the FBI will bust more people for doing it.

Sentime,
I have a question. How do you know that one person is "controlling" 40 to 50 bots in the first place. I can never seem to get any of them to explain to me how they run their operations in any detail. Of course I'm usually trying to KILL them while I send a petition....
Sounds like you are just advocating private servers over the retail. Thats a no win arguement, you believe what you want, fact is they are illegal and no matter how hard you try, there is no way you are going to convince anyone that the players on an illegal server who's only reason they play there is so they don't have to pay the monthly fee and use a modified "easier" ruleset are somehow more "moral and ethical" in their gameplay and don't use bots. Even if that was true it doesn't matter, they are on private servers to begin with thereby destroying any claim at legitimacy.
So the "I think they're better because there's a live person behind most toons, unlike retail" holds no wieght because
you can't prove it whatso ever, its your perspective and opinion.
the server is illegal to begin with thereby destroying any claims of legitimate gameplay. Lineage II is an IP and protected by copy right laws, like it or not thats the case. Some may be unsimpethetic to the industry but that still doesn't make any less wrong. The law doesn't ask for the individuals approval. Run for congress and use that as a platform, get rid of copy right/IP laws. Good luck.
since they are illegal it calls into question the ethics of the person playing on the server to begin with. Its not like they don't know. Fact is people play them because they are free and easy. There is no higher justification/reasoning and that negates any rationalization.
But hey, if you want to play on an inferior, patched up, modified emulation of the real game that can be shut down at anytime (either by the FBI or the owner just getting bored with it, and that happens pretty frequently) because its free and easy that's your choice.

Actually lots got shut down. Anarchy, paradise, etc etc. They all got cease and dessist orders. Paradise and extreme were taken to court.

An act or instance of such falseness.
Sentime used the above quote as evidance/justification for your reasoning that the private servers where somehow better. You offered no other proof other then your opinion.
SINCE private servers are illegal your opinion is not enough to justify the ethical use of them. I wouldn't want to go to court and only have my "opinion" as a defense.
Of course thats my opinion but generally speaking, thats how it works
Sentime made the claim now support it. What other support do you have that private servers are legit/cool/superior/ok/better/whatever aside from they are free, easier and your opinion?
If there are less bots please provide proof of that.

EDIT - My apologies to Sentime, I didn't realise SkSwitch had replied and not you. He was just up for a bit of trolling I guess. I edited your name so not to appear that I am directing my comments at you Sentime. Anyway, if anyone is up to supporting anything about private servers, feel free to jump in. If all you want to do is leave your flames because you have no other input....leave them, it just proves the point. In fact the more irrational/flame baited/name calling the post the more it supports the legit side of the house, enjoy.
Is it the people selling adena who are to blame, or the people buying it? Or is it the fact that NCsoft has made a game where currency is notoriously difficult to earn? The adena farming market is merely stepping up to meet a need that shouldn't be there in the first place.
The more effective botting is in a game, the more you see it. NCsoft does mass bans all the time, yet you see botting everywhere in L2. Are the botters to blame? Or should we blame NCsoft for making a game that is perfect for botting? Again, botting merely addresses a need that shouldn't be there in the first place.
Are the private server owners to blame for providing their players with free L2? Or are the players to blame for playing on a private server? Or is it NCsoft's fault for making a game so grindy that private servers with ridiculously high rates spring up all over the place and become hugely successful?
The law gives NCsoft some legal recourse but history will not be as kind. These three "problems" are red herrings of shit game design, and players know it. NCsoft can pursue their legal options but unless they start rethinking their approach to design, these problems will never and i mean NEVER go away.
And to all you numb skulls who cheer whenever NCsoft annouces that they just shut down a private server or banned a couple hundred botters... you people are completely oblivious. The real problem is that they shouldn't have to.
They shouldn't have to ban adena farmers because players should be able to make enough adena that they don't feel the need to ebay it.
They shouldn't have to ban botters because there shouldn't be a payoff for botting in the first place.
They shouldn't have to shut down private servers because the rates should be high enough to keep people on retail.
No, not everyone ebays, bots, or plays on private servers. But enough players do that it has become a part of everyone's gameplay. All L2 players know about these things because they see them every day. This speaks volumes on how open L2 is to abuse and how willing L2's playerbase is to abuse it, despite the risk of getting banned, fined, or whatever.
The solution to this isn't the FBI. The solution is getting NCsoft to open its goddamn eyes and give the player base a game that they can play without all that external baggage. There will always be botters, always be ebayers, and always be private servers. ALWAYS.
Stop chasing the abusers and focus on making the game less open and desirable to abuse. And damn it, this needs to be done on a design/gameplay level. Upgrading to the latest version of GameGuard only delays the inevitable.
I would say you have a point but you really don't. Take WoW for exmaple. A game where it is notoriously easy to level and farm gold. Yet there are gold sellers for WoW and there are bots to level up your character. There are also private servers. Explain to me why these things exist for a game that gold and levels are literally handed to you.
It is not as widespread in wow as it is in L2, not even close.
Here on the L2 board every other post is complaining about bots and adena farmers. You don't see that on the wow board. Go to gamehaqs.com and look how many posts have been made on the L2 boards versus how many posts have been made on the wow boards.
Simply put, wow's game mechanics do not cater to these forms of abuse like L2's do.
Gold is easy to come by, and much of the top gear is bind on pick up anyway.
There are no buff bot classes in wow, and Priests are fun to play (re: DPS and solo-ability). Wouldn't you say that botting is primarily confined to gold farmers who can't sit awake at the computer 24 hours a day?
Wow private servers exist but are scarcely populated because it's easy to level up on retail. Most people who play on private servers do not do so the avoid the $15/mo. I don't play on wow private servers but i would guess that the main focus is to make raid and pvp gear easier to obtain, as that is the only real grindy part of the game.
Yes all these things exist in wow and potentially can in any MMO, but they are particularly widespread in L2. And as i've said, i attribute this to L2's game mechanics.
WoW is entirely instanced and only a fool would bot out in the open.
The fact is people will look towards the easiest means to achieve the same results. This is true in anything in life. It wouldn't make any difference if they had 100 rate servers b/c people would still bot. People still bot on private servers b/c they don't want to put in the effort.
I also find it funny how you say that wow private servers are scarcely populated but you've never played on one.
In a medical school class up in Boston, there was a class that had a timed online exam that was completely open-book open whatever, the only thing you couldnt' do was work together.
So you have an exam that's timed and open book and still people, well your future doctors, worked together on the exam lol.
So instead of getting a 95%, they cheated to get a 100%. Just remember, these are your future doctors hahhahahhaa.
Pretty much after seeing this, if someone can cheat and get away with it, they probably will, not to mention that the reward for cheating was, negligble. To cheat on something that was already open book is, how do we say, quite pathetic.

What i'm saying is that the payoff for these activities in L2 is huge compared to the payoff in other games.
In wow, these things make the game a little easier. In L2, they make things a lot easier. That's why it's so prevalent in L2, the payoff is huge. I mean HUGE (with capital letters, as to express the enormity of the benefits). The payoff in wow or any other MMO that i can think of, not so much. Except maybe RF online, but that game sucks for other reasons.
In wow, you level up fast. Yes having a bot or RMTed gold will speed things up, but it only takes a couple months to reach the level cap anyways. In L2, having a buff bot or an endless supply of adena could potentially shave months off the grind.
And there is a difference between "don't" and "haven't" but i will retract that statement anyways. As there is no solid way to determine how many people play on wow private servers versus how many people play on L2 private servers.

I claim
But hey, if you want to play on an inferior, patched up, modified emulation of the real game that can be shut down at anytime (either by the FBI or the owner just getting bored with it, and that happens pretty frequently) because its free and easy that's your choice.
So my question is-
Are there any private servers running Chronicle 5 at 100% as you would find on retail? If so PM me the link as proof so I can take a look. Do not post it, you will get deleted.
Necessity is the mother of invention.
Is it the people selling adena who are to blame, or
the people buying it?
Let me add to what santaclaws said,
In a medical school class up in Boston, there was a class that had a timed online exam that was completely open-book open whatever, the only thing you couldnt' do was work together.

You can see my sci-fi/WW2 book recommendations.
