I really would love to give GW an honest-to-goodness shot.
I've gotten 3 characters into Post-Searing and really think I probably need a good guild to join - problem is, I haven't found one yet. Every one I've joined has either been comprised of largely non-social people who won't even acknowledge you're *there* half the time. Or, arrogant elitist "uber" types who feel they're above you because they've played longer.
The last one I joined - and was *invited* to join - I was kicked out of - both the guild *and* from their TeamSpeak server. Why? Because I was being friendly and polite to other guildmembers. Literally. The second day I was in the guild, I logged and said hi to everyone. Someone asked who I was, so I answered them. Suddenly, I'm booted from the guild and the TS server - the reason? "Too much chattering". Ooookay. I'd been logged in for less than a minute and managed to say 3 things. "Hi", "How is everyone" and "I'm Mike. I'm a new Guild member" - bam, I'm kicked for too much chatter. No warnings. No asking me to keep the talking to a minimum. Nothing. Apparently, this was a super elite guild where friendliness is a sign of weakness or something and they just don't have the time nor patience to deal with it. I have no idea. But it was lame. I mean, that's the first and only time I've been kicked from a guild in any online game for being sociable and friendly. I'm 33 years-old. I'm not a child, I don't act like a child. Yet, I was booted out like I was some little kid.
That was the final turn-off for me and I haven't bothered since.
Yet, part of me feels like it could be a really fun game and I would *love* to buy Nightfall. The graphics/artwork in that game look gorgeous (and I'm a graphics designer by trade). I love the idea behind the skills.. how you have to setup a certain "build" before you head out to fight, in PVP or PvE mode, and so forth. I really enjoyed everything in Pre-Searing.
I've just had nothing but bad or discouraging experiences since then.

That makes two of us, believe me. I tried contacting the guild leader to ask him why he (it was him that did it) just booted me like that and I guess he couldn't be bothered to respond. I did get the impression that it was a guild that took itself very seriously and was extremely competitive. The first day I was in the guild, a couple other members were pretty much telling me - without actually doing so - what class combos I would be expected to play. So.. truth to tell - and this isn't sour grapes - I don't know how long it would have been a match for me if that hadn't happened. I'm a social person, I'm not a super serious gamer, I rather enjoy having fun. I certainly don't take kindly to being told - directly or otherwise - what kind of character to play. So, perhaps they did me a favor - in a very, very rude way of course.

Finding the guild that is right for you is a lot like finding a job. You have to hunt around and say no to people that aren't making you good offers. That means you have to ask questions about their guild. How many members, how active, how long have they been established, current focus. I think too many people just accept guild invites without doing any research or even reading the charter of the guild they joined.
The whole glad points in RA arena annoys me to no end. PEOPLE you get glad points for wining team arena too. If by the time you earn the glad title you can't win TA consistantly than what does the title mean...? That you know how to take advantage of sucky groups? If you want monk go to TA and group with one. If you suck too much and can't win TA, then maybe you should stop dropping out of monkless RA groups and learn how to play.

I don't agree with you. Sure there are some stupid kids willing to take off the fun from the game but i found a decent guild where we do all sorts of quests together. And i always find a few people that just want t ostick together and make some damage for XP.

You don't need to be so agressive. I think the GW community is plagued by some stupid kids but i've found really nice people. Even people willing to do quests together just for fun and talking. Perhaps you have to be friendly in order to meet friendly people but i've had the best of luck. At least in Old Ascalon i haven't found an unfriendly player yet.
Guild wars is like people have said its a learning curve. It Filiters player which hasnt got the "skill" to go futher in to the game they need to learn to behave to get to harder / better people. If you dont got what it takes then you shoundnt play guild wars. Its like this mostly people who play serius and know what they do, they aint even in the low lvls (easy areas). They move along the game fast and talks in groups and then stick to em. Its hard to get in to one of these groups there for its better to start whit a bucnh of people that you know and form a guild and move forward and mabe merge whit others. But if you just keep on demading Atention like it works in Anarchy online, wow and so on you wont get very far in guild wars... you need to be social also not just a good player.
Tip: play PVE first then move to pvp. Pvpn in guild wars demads that you know what you are doing. And if you can handel the campain in guild wars (any Campain) you might move on to Pvp in Teams(serching good group to join or creat guild) or Random ( for training).

Since i started playing the game, i only found 1 people with bad behaviour. It happened yesterday but i simply ignored him. Besides this little problem, i always find cooperative, friendly players. I see no problems with the GW community. Of course i don't stick to the pre-mission Ascalon so i don't know how ppl are there. But i have a char at Ascalon just to help newbies sort out who is right and wrong and help them with quests and stuff.
I recently bought GW. Till now, I haven't met any annoying kiddie behaviour. I found a nice guild as soon as I got in the monastery but then again, I haven't explored Cantha much. I'll see how the game gets as I progress more.

~If you shoot at mimes, should you use a silencer?~
As soon as I joined the game for the first time, I enter the city and all I see are people spamming. I mean, it's everywhere, and it's so bad that it seems nobody even TRIES to tell them to shut up anymore. I really really hate to say this, but the community in WoW is MUCH more civilized than the one in this game. I mean, here's a typical chat you'll see. Note that I just logged in and the first 5 lines are already on my screen.
If you examine the picture above, you'll notice your typical spammer, looking for a group. Then you'll notice someone ironically saying WoW is evil, obviously overlooking the spam hell he's in right now. This was the first screenshot I took, and somehow I only came across one true spammer this time around, but this is about the average, and it looks pretty bad already. One more thing. The first time I entered a city, I put 3 people on my ignore list within the first 5 minutes for spamming.
So for anyone who's thinking of getting GW, think Barrens chat, but 1000x worse. And the reason I'm posting this is because I simply can't understand why people put up with this. Even in WoW, if someone spammed that much, people would /ignore, /report, tell him to shut the hell up, etc. Here, people just accept it.
This is by far the most immature community there is, and worst of all there's no oversight. FPS games are better, because there's an server admin to kick you out if you act like an idiot, WoW is better, because the players themselves actually care somewhat about excessive spam.
I have to agree with you about the spam. It's hard-work trying to read important stuff out of all the crap people say in most visited towns. You do have the ignore list and you can tell them to shut up but it's not just because people are immature.
If you want to buy tickets to a very important soccer match, you have to go much sooner than the time of the game. Perhaps you'll have to sleep there the day before just to get in line. You do this because everyone does. If you don't do this, you'll have to wait a very long time. Then again, if people were civilized, nobody would do this and you wouldn't have to sleep close to the court to buy the tickets.
The same goes for spam in GW and every other game (except WoW, i see). A lot of people have to spam what they're saying just to get heard because there's people saying stuff like "lfp mission whatsoever" every second. Those spammers can be easily ignored. However, i find no problems in trying to get heard and i only post what i want to say once. And my ignore list is quite extensive.
Comparing GW spam to WoW spam is a bit stupid. WoW is a very expensive game because you have this gargantuan monthly fee where GW doesn't. Of course stupid spammers (mostly kids, i agree) won't play WoW because they don't want to pay the fee. So, WoW is already putting away some people that don't play games for fun (well, not shared fun). IMHO, those kids definitely don't play GW as civilized beings and they're there just to be stupid. Either that, or they don't know what's rules.
After all, you can't compare GW to WoW saying GW is crappier just because of the in-game spam (though WoW is indeed better than GW). So, use the ignore list or act like a moderator and tell people to shut up. It's freaking annoying but i can live with it.
Sorry for double posting but i just correctly analysed the image. By the way, i am supposing genres.
Deathblade Raider posted three times his crap about the mission. He is, indeed, a moron. If it took 5 secs to appear all this text, it seems unlikely that in 5 secs he could find an horde of people willing to go with him in the mission. He should have waited a few more secs or even a minute.
Im A Roleplayer Foo actually spammed. He didn't need to post the payment stuff 4 times. Besides, he used comms 3 times to speak with somebody else (i suppose), a thing he could have done using Whisper.
Seelya Amiril talked 6 times to a person. This one is obvious and she could have used Whisper.
Silvara Solinari used 10 commands. She couldn't have done that somewhere else because she doesn't have a brain. And it's unlikely that you took that image after 5 secs because, though using 10 commands in 5 secs is possible, is unlikely that she would have done that since Mei Jun Wang and Silvara were using the same commands sometimes.
Mei Jung Wang used 3 commands. The same goes for him.
Xanadu Myjen only posted twice his commercial proposal. Seems fair.
So, after all, there are indeed spammers and people that just don't know the Whisper command. And there's the stupid people that try all the emotion commands in towns.
I agree that comparing this game to WoW is, in a way, pointless, but I was just trying to make that point that if people consider WoW's community to be immature (and I know first-hand that WoW definitely has a big share of immature people), then Guild War's community is something much worse. Also, I think you were mistaken, but I never said how long I waited to take the screenshot. It was more like 15 to 20 seconds, although the first spammer did post all 4 times almost instantaneously. I did mention having to put 3 people on ignore within 5 minutes, though.
I also admitted that in this random screenshot I took, that there was only 1 true spammer, but in a way, the other person who used 10 commands in row (even if they were different commands) could be considered a spammer too. This is not to say that I've never seen stuff like this in WoW, cause I have, but all I'm saying is that it's much, much more commonplace and extreme in GW.
Another point I wanted to make with the screenshot is that you can log in any time in a city, expand the chat window, and take a screenshot within the first minute of logging in, and I believe at least 90% of the time, you will have some kind of spam in the chat window, and I think I'm being very generous with the 90% figure. I'll probably do a test of my own in the future to try to back this up (and don't worry, I'm not gonna spam this forum with screenshots ).
I dont even bother with the community except someone is sellin somethin i want. Apart from that i can always finish the quests by myself without any crappy idiot spitting shite in my face. If you really need help just get a guild, i dont realy do guilds but that's the best option.
So for anyone who's thinking of getting GW, think Barrens chat, but 1000x worse.
I've played GW almost 2 years (since the pre-release beta event), have tried WoW and a few other MMOs. Barrens chat is well known, but I never bothered with it. But if GW that quote is true, then the shirt "i survived barrens chat" is an insult. Just kidding, but seriously.
If you leave the l33t kiddies alone, most players are both really nice, helpful, and just out to have a good time. over my time playing I've had fewer times encountering with actual jerks than i have fingers. this doesnt count the kiddies you fight in RA, HoH, or AB, of course. Although AB doesnt count, everyone has fun picking on each other in that one .
Getting a really good guild/alliance is very helpful, but for the most part, I found my WoW escapade to show more immature people, but thats just me. I think what time of day you play effects it too. When you play when kiddies are in school or sleeping (my free hours) that usually helps with any game. And for course, almost everyone swears everywhere, its just something you usually have to deal with. Now days swearing is only "bad" if you swear at someone, and is bad@$$ if you just swear.
Most free MMOs have communities full of kids, getting a good guild without them is recommended :P
Same reason for "barrens chat" in wow, free/trial accounts only have access to the starting areas and the barrens. So the chat fills up with idiots. Higher level places are much nicer.
As everyone probably agrees, there's stupid people and people that's not stupid. The same goes for the GW community. You might find stupid kids that play the game because there's no monthly fees but i tend to find good people and i'm in a very good guild that has some 13-years old kids and they don't act like spoiled-brats. It depends on the town, the way you talk, the time of the day, etc.

Same reason for "barrens chat" in wow, free/trial accounts only have access to the starting areas and the barrens. So the chat fills up with idiots. Higher level places are much nicer.
