You trying to live up to your name here?
The whole problem with this idea is that every little distinct object you mention that when put together will give a distinctive look has to be kept as seperate objects and not collected together to represent one object. For a server to keep track of this many objects to represent one object graphically and send the information to every other player will most likely lag everyone out. Usually parts to create other things are kept in an inventory and the server doesn't care about where in the 3D world it's located and doesn't have to send that information to everyone. The only time it will is if it the item is on the ground. And if you noticed from some games, a group of very small objects that are the same is represented graphically as one object. And if it's left out in the 3D world too long, garbage collects it because the server doesn't want to keep keeping track of it. Things that can be associated with an object, such as texture, can give objects that are the same, different looks and the server isn't affected by this much, but for your problem, that mean textures have to be built on the fly, which would case problems again. Game resources (eg. models, textures, sounds, etc) usually need to be static and available to all players. This doesn't matter if it's a 2D game or 3D game, because the server still need to keep track of objects in the game world and let every client know about those objects (of course 3D games has to keep track of a z-axis while 2D doesn't). Even when computer technology increases where a server won't have any problems keeping track of that many objects, you still have the latency issue to send that object information over the internet, which doesn't look like it's going to improve for a long while.
Edit: Don't think to hard about what I just wrote. It's usually the way it's explained of why you can't go to far with customization, but I just realized it really doesn't have to be this way. I won't go into explaining it now. If I do go on to expalin it, it will be in Developer's Corner (probably where this idea thread should have been; but I'll stop being so picky about where people should be posting).
Man, Kuzzle. I wish the system would log you out and all of your posts would fail. Turn off the bold and the large font. Are you special? Your posts should get more attention than everybody else's??
I could've sworn that I had just posted, but I guess it didn't go. It was a long one too.
Anyway, I like the bold text, and this isn't so big. I think you need to calm down. Why is everyone so high strung now-a-days (I don't know if the -s were needed, but I added them anyway)?
By the way, I always use bold type. It looks better, plain and simple. Why would you want it to log me out and fail my posts and such, anyway?
I feel that your post was rude, and uncalled for. Another thing, I think that your aggression is being channeled at me because of a personal matter. Maybe you hate your job, maybe you got dumped. I don't know, though I would appreciate it if you would please be more polite.
I did not mean for my assumption to sound rude, I only meant to... Well, I don't really know why I said it, I just did. I am sorry if you feel as though this was an attack, please understand that it wasn't.
Trying to skim things but I think what you are describing might be covered by A Tale in the Desert. Check it out, I dont have a link, no combat, society more or less based on crafting and originality. . .
#1 Don't type like that. It's annoying and it hurts my eyes.
#2 Although, that may be a great idea.... you have no idea how coding works. There is nobody in their right mind going to pay a team of programmers to program something like that, wich would take weeks for a team, to be such a trivial aspect to the game..... then have the game not work after spending an extra $20-50k on trivial little things, such as the one you suggested. Unless the game was designed to be built totally around that, like A Tale in the Desert. That's something completely different because they're not working on the complicated combat systems. (Even though I've never played "A Tale in the Desert")
wow, well this has turned into a total slanging match.......
I think it might be a good idea to leave this topic alone as a possible future dream, I mean, Kuzzle never said he thought someone should go and code this idea for him today or that all MMORPGs that weren't like this suck, so I don't think he deserves all these flames. If he had put it in developers corner people would just have had more reason to flame him for suggesting something currently impossible, but it was just a thought he wanted to share ok?
However Kuzzle I do think you ought to look at the way that putting your text in Bold is annoying people, I mean you are not the only person in the world reading this and if you were you could use whatever text you liked, but there is a convention here, that we use the normal text for our posts (that the admin in their wisdom have picked and most people seem happy with) and use bold for something that we want to stand out. By using bold you are seen to be saying look at me read this it is important you may think other people suck for not being able to accept that you want to be different, and you may say that using bold does not equal shouting or trying to grab attention, but it does to most of the online comunity.
You may think this sux, and that people should allow you your personal statement of using bold font, and to stand out, but there are other ways to stand out, and you gotta decide whether you would prefer to annoy a large number of people just so you can use a different style of font, or if you would rather have a reasonable exchange of ideas about something more interesting.
Just to say. Im currently in my last year of a Games Design course and have been researching into mmorpgs with the intent of creating a game world where almost anything can be created. Myself and three others have been developing ideas for quite some time now but have not been able to focus on it due to other commitments yet. I just wanted to say to the original post that not only will it be possible to create items of your own, it will be near limitless what you can do. I wont get into anything now but over the next few months we are,(myself and my mates)going to start developing the ideas into a sound games design. I hope! Will be looking for people to fill in questionnaires and stuff but for now end of year project looms!
Anyway, just wanted to let you lot know that it is possible, within the next five years or so a game engine will be made, allowing the ability to create a world where almost anything can be done. We hope to do it. We intend to.
Um just so you know how I answered your poll, and particularly because it seemed to be in part because of my post - Kuzzle is rude.
I attempted to answer your question, then as an aside mentioned your inappropriate use of text. Your response was to flame me with semantics, then tell me my response was wrong despite the fact that you don't seem to have looked into it.
I really wish there was a game world that was setup like Earth, with all the continents, exactly like a globe. Then there could be transportation systems (let's say high-speed trains and planes.)
No stupid goblins running around, just Earth and normal animals (birds, fish, mammals).
Everything would be crafted by hand, or made in large machines but it would have to be done by big companies and wouldn't last as long if it was mass produced.
Basically a copy of Earth as it is today, with governments and possible takeovers by terrorist groups, militant groups, etc. Goal of the game, control the most land and make the most money while defending your land. I'm sure you could add a lot more to the game, but this is just the small details.
Ok, I wrote a big long one, and it didn't post, so here it goes again.
I like bold because it's easier to read. The normal type looks bunched up when in long sections, and I lose my place.
I don't see how I was rude, though I see how others may have thought I was. I am sorry for sounding rude, I am not very good with words and such. I am not using that as an excuse, just saying.
I did check out A Tale In The Desert and it didn't look like something I would want to play. I enjoy combat in small doses and with a good monster variety. I also don't really like the color of sand, or Egypt in general.
I realise that it's not possible, hence the name of the topic. Though I'm not 100% clear on the details of what I first posted, that was a while back. I also did not expect anyone to make it, just clearing that up.
I can't believe people said I was rude when people were like flaming me first and stuff... Gnarled did say that my font blows... Maybe I was overlysensitive?

It will be possible within the next five years or so for a game engine allowing people to do almost anything? Yea, I say that would be somewhat feasible depending on what you call anything. Just look at the new engine for Half-Life 2. The engine might let you do anything you want with it, but I don't see a game letting you do almost anything. There is still memory management and network latency that you must consider when designing the game architecture. Besides just looking at the architecture, a game needs rules and boundries, which someone like you would be putting in your design of the gameplay.
I like having freedom but I'm not going to be asking for a game to let me do everything. Usually these games are not very good because they offer too much and polish none of it. It's best to narrow your basic gameplay and polish it.
BTW, what school are you going to that offers a game design program (a course is usually just one class; and most classes don't last over a year)? Most of the programs I see, even in the bigger game related schools, such as The Art Institute of California and Full Sail, still concentrate on either the art side or the programming side. I'm not saying that you aren't going to one. I would just like to know if there are schools that are actually taking game design as being seperate from the art and programming fields.
Originally posted by Kuzzle I'm just going by an article in Electronic Gaming Monthly, but it says there's a place called DigiPen. I dunno if that's the place he is going... Just commenting.
Digipen does the same thing as Full Sail and The Art Insitute of California. I already knew about them. There's also Expression College for Digital Arts, Vancouver Institute for Media Arts, Digital Media Arts College, and many larger traditional schools, such as MIT, that also offer courses focused at games. But, still usually have to do with art or programming again.
BTW, he used the term 'mates.' So, I'm assuming he isn't American and wouldn't be going to an American school.
Just to clarify it for the last few posts. Im attending a brand new course in Ireland aimed solely at computer games design. I completed a full-time one year course last year dedicated to games theory, 3D graphics and a few other things. Just finished the first year of this new course and it went quite well. Entering a competition called Dare to be Digital for the summer where myself and a team of four others will be making a game from scratch, with our own engine in ten weeks! God help us!!! lol Ahh, its not that bad. Anyway....
The original message i posted mentioned a little project we call 'Lucina'. I know its a huge statement to suggest a game/simulation world could be created in the next five years but it is possible. With our spare time we have not only come up with ideas for possibly creating this but also looked at the technology needed for each and every little thing suggested. Its looking good. Havent been able to dedicate much time to it since the year has been comming to a close as projects are coming thick and fast. Also this Dare competition is looming. FUN I TELL YA!!!
I dont want to start into a long conversation about it yet, even though id love to but as ive said i dont have the time to get involved...yet. We have a .com going up soon. Will post the adrs when its up and running. Ill be able to pop in here when i get the time to so ill reply to any posts and take part in any further chats.

Man I have not been on this site long but from what I have seen so far you have got to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, jerks on here. This is the typical nonsense crap that normally spews from you and I guess I shouldn't be suprised it came from you. Where the heck did you come up with the idea that you have to be a professional game designer to come up with a good idea? Anyone with half a brain knows that most good game ideas don't come from a so called "professional game designer". At least half of the really good games I can think of right now where created in someones garage. I don't normally flame like this but man I get tired of seeing your name beside all these completely boneheaded attempts at flames.

I didn't use a different font, I just used bold, so if you say this font blows, that means the one you use blows and is to narrow.
Oh, that would be like i'm describing, only I like combat, and it would be in the game, and I dislike egypt.
So in other words; It's nothing at all like what I'm describing...
