Anyone on this message board hates WoW because day in and day out we have to hear how it's the best thing since sliced bread based on the opinion of some noob who's never played anything but Diablo and Warcraft. And everytime a new game comes out it's hype dropps .1 points because "It's a WoW clone"(It has magic or armor...)
By the way you put this, I'm going to assume you're saying that WoW is more than a game to some people. I seriously think those people need to find something more in life if they consider WoW more than a game.
Are you gonna break every cliche before this thread is over?

I can't let this chance slip even though the answer is probably answered like 50 times in this thread already:
WoW is good, but overhyped. Hype up a good, but not awesome product, and some people begin to hate it. Keep hyping it and the same people will loath it.
To take a really crappy example completely out of context: Fish. Fish are good, they even taste kind of good, but they're overhyped making many hate it just out of principle :P Still though, millions eat fish despite there being far greater allthough sometimes underappreciated foods out there.
Serious note: In a rough generalisation, new players to MMOs don't have a clue what they're talking about, just like I don't have a clue how to drive even though I have a good time with my Volkswagen Golf. Still though, for some reason new MMO players introduced through WoW behave as experts (who incidently compare absolutely everything else to WoW which they percieve as the pinnacle of online gaming). So I ask, how would Michael Schumacher feel if I told him my Golf was the hands down best car ever (particularly cause thousands drive it too)? Ofc I'm not saying the rest of the MMO community are Michael, they're more like Ralph really.
Much needed edit: How would he feel? He would in all likelyhood start crying. Think about Michael's feelings the next time you praise WoW.

Man, this is the truth in 100%. I wish people could have the eyes and maturity to simply realize this what you just said. I've satated this many many MANY times without any real success. They've got some really think brick heads that's for sure.
Drawing similarities like you did there is often the most stupid thing you can do according to the .. um ... fanboys (heck I dunno what to call theese people). Thus it's the only thing that can be done to explain such ... "phenomenas" which just occur.
If you in any way, or and form felt .. uhh "offended" by anything I just said, congratulations! You're the audience we are describing!!!!!

WoW is a game that anyone can play and enjoy. That's simply rubs those that call themselves "hardcore" the wrong way. Who are these so called "hardcore" players? Simply those with an obsession to play constantly and level level level... provided that they can outpace normal players easily simply because of time, not necessarily skill.
On the other hand you have the truely skilled high end player (who will never call themselves hardcore) who love WoW becuase it's not full of artificial timesinks that hide poor and unavailable content.
What it boils down to is that WoW is the best mmo ever and sets a standard that will be nearly impossible to follow by others.
Err what are rep grinds/arenas and even the 25 man raids except artificial time sinks and unavailable content to many players ?
Wow misses out on the little things (or big depending on your point of view). Tradeskills are shallow and often require materials/recipes that are unobtainable unless raiding and items that bind to the maker limiting their ability to sell them not to mention most items are easily surpassed by world drops.
Character customization is all but none existent you look like the current equipment you wear without any options to dye items or even change your looks other than the 'very basic' character selection screen.
Housing guild/personal is not present (this in itself whilst a time sink) would add a lot more depth to the game.
Hero classes advertised at launch will never appear because Blizzard have no idea how to balance current classes for PvP, so in attempts to balance for PvP they damage the play experience for PvE players (Even tho the game is primarily PvE in design)
There also needs to be more incentive for grouping other than just to kill an elite or run an instance, the XP gained from grouping should be more than a player can get from similar kills solo, wow does have a group bonus but it doesn't come anywhere near to the XP loss encountered when killing in a group.
Additionally to avoid high level characters camping leveling spots for lower levels, the moment a mob turns grey there should be NO drops from the mob, this would help the AH market and the people who are actually levelling into what is becoming a more and more inflation prone economic system due in part to Blizzards inability to control farmers (resource and gold).
And.... If Blizzard really want PvP in the game they need to remove rewards for BG/Arena games and find a way of making world PvP, TBH I thnk Daoc had the best idea here in a frontier zone that acts as a buffer zone between factions, option quests take you to the frontier and mobs killed in the frontier yield more XP than in the safe PvE environment, plus objectives were available in the fronter that affected the performance of the faction in the entire game not just one little zone.

I'm sorry, what? You must have had bullshit in your mouth. WoW is by in large one of the biggest time sinks I have ever had the enjoyment, or lack there of since the BC, of throwing my money at. Please, for the love of all things sacred and holy, never speak again.
Do you know how much content WoW has hidden? Apparently not. The "Dark Portal" has been in the game since the launch of the original. So has the instance for player housing and multiple other instances that I have visited (which is not allowed...) The rooms are there and filled in. There are no enemies, chest, or random DoDads as they are called in the dev world. It is simply rooms and background textures just waiting to be used.
As I stated in an earlier reply to this as well... The standard that WoW sets is for CURRENT MMO's. It is the pinnacle of the gaming experince right now. But the next gen MMO's are already on there way, and seeing as WoW is firmly sitting on top of a rather large pile, its going to be very difficult for them to keep up. Not only that but actual "hardcore, yes HARDCORE" MMO players are starting to get sick of fantasy. Slaying dragons, beating up on Orcs and seeing elves everywhere is getting OLD, and a lot of people will agree with me. Not only that but people are getting sick of cookie cutter MMO's. They get old and you might as well be playing a console RPG.
"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."
Hating a game for the reasons that have been listed is pretty odd. I personally stopped playing wow because it, like any other game, gets old after a while. Its not a reason to hate it. Sure the community is less than stellar and the customer service isnt quite up to task but in the end if theres 8 mil playing they gotta be doing something right. Like with music, everyone has their own taste so one bashing the other is pretty pointless and only starts flame wars. What i do find funny in this thread though is that people like Ahiles are the reason several assume that the community is so pathetic. When i played it was with a solid group of players who enjoyed the game and treated eachother respectfully. When someone answers posts with comments reguarding their "brain cell" level it pretty much leave little to the imagination how large their character flaws are.
As has been stated by others in this thread, the reason people hate WOW is because it is successful. If the game had not become popular, people would be focused on complaining about another game. Of course, this does not apply to every person that posts a negative comment about WOW. Yet, from my years of reading posts on this site I have seen a pattern that leads me to this opinion. You may see a list of reasons why they hate WOW, but look at what they are playing at this moment and you will probably see the same problems, only with different graphics. WOW didn't do a lot that was original...they simply borrowed what they thought was good about the genre. As is the way with the industry, others have now borrowed from WOW as Blizzard did from others.
Meh. I dislike Warcraft, it got old waaay too quick. At the time I was playing, there was not nearly enough middle or end-game content- these are things that should have been released with the game. Moreover, improvements to the game took WAY too long in coming; compared to less successful MMOS such as Asheron's Call or Ultima, a larger budget should have caused MORE attention on the side of the devs.
However, disliking a game does not mean that it is bad. I'm ambiguous on whether WoW is beneficial to spur higher quality games; the content or gameplay is not really that original, but this is offset by the fact that a great deal of nongamers was brought into the market- more gamers means more profits to spur innovation . Marketting and hype ARE good for something.
The only things I'm really worried about are the view that this might give developers(Or investors- the effect is the same), and the market share that WoW has.
Investors and developers may start to model WoW more, as an ideal, due to it's financial success; if less effort is put into a product than how it is presented, you might start to see a lack of improvement in the field (Heck, just look at windows. I know nothing about computers, but switching to a unix based system was heaven). Moreover, as crappier games gain larger portions of the market, competition becomes less about the power of the product, and more about strategic/market power.
I have seen so many people who seem to hate the game - I'll list them:
"Ex Players"
There are those who played WoW and felt let down, they feel like they threw there money out of the window. They feel like Blizzard deceived them.
"They tricked me into playing that crappy game."
"Anti Fanboys"
There are those who probably wouldn't care about WoW - if there weren't thousands of stupid ignorant WoW fanboys who act like Blizzard invented MMORPGs and any other game was just a clone - or simply bash every game that isn't WoW. Anti Fanboys may look like they hate WoW, but they actually just hate those fanboys.
"I just can't hear it anymore. They didn't copy it from WoW. How could you copy something from a game that didn't have anything original in the first place"
"Trolls"
They just bash WoW to start a flame war.
"OMG WOW SUCKZORZ SO MUCH !!!!1111"
"Fanboys"
They love their game and hate all other games including WoW.
"... is so much better than WoW."
"Annoyed Grumpy People"
You get on their nerves by talking about WoW. You get flamed.
"Just shut the f**** up."
These groups exist for other games aswell but there is one special group for WoW:
"Avengers"
The game they play or played lost a great number of people when wow started. Maybe it got canceled or lacks players now. Might be they just think WoW is hurting the genre in some way. Maybe they are jealous because the game they see as superior to WoW is not that succesful. The Avengers are on their personal crusade against WoW. They do anything to hurt the reputation of the game.

I think that a lot of people fall under this category, only with the addition of "burn-out" tossed into the mix, which the poster above points out. People tend to feel deceived when they let themselves put faith in something, only to be let down when everything isn't as they had hoped it would be. Add having spent days of your life fighting over the "uber" loot that took months grinding instances to get, and you get a dissalusioned, angry player that feels that the world owes them something.
Unfortunately I have seen these same folks spreading to other games...and bringing their negative vibes along with them.
Hhhmm...I think I'm beginning to fall into the "Annoyed Grumpy People" category.

I think WoW is helping and hurting other games, both at the same time. Some games would never get the funding they need to be created, if it wasn't for WoW being so successful. Yet, these same games have to then compete with WoW.
A certain game that will remain nameless, was just released in a half-done state after years of hype. Now, if it hadn't been for WoW, and the idea that these games can make a lot of cash, the game never would have continued to get the funding it needed to be released. It would have perished a year or more ago...out of money and with no hope of ever being released. Yet, seeing the way WoW simply took over the MMORPG market after maybe six months, a large company decided to shove more cash the developer's way in the hope of getting another piece of the pie. The problem wasn't just that they didn't finish the game or were poorly managed, but that they had to then compete with WoW for a chunk of the market...and right around the release of an expansion. If WoW hadn't been in the market, players would have been much more accepting of the product.
As far as WoW's influence on the way other games are created...I don't know. I will say that the changes that WoW caused the developers of EQ2 to implement way after release made the game actually playable (for me), and seemed to be accepted pretty well by the players. Where as the changes they made to SWG for the same reasons...well...I think we all know how that went...badly.
This poor people just try to be diffrent from other , and hate the stuff that so much people like.
WoW ist not that bad as they claim, they are much more worse Games out there.
Don't you get it? To a start I was fine with it, I just didn't like it. But now it's gone rediculously far and it's so hyped and spread everywhere I'm just getting so freaking sick of it. Like listening to radio all day long and then there's always a song that plays each and every second for years and years and years. After a while you go insane. Simple put.
It's like listening to a radio tuned into the WoW station, more like.
For a person so adamant that you don't want to hear about WoW and so desperate to avoid hearing about it, one has to ask the question, what are you doing surfing the WoW forums?
-It's too easy to get to max level. They ignore the fact that games that make it harder, generally involve alot more camping of areas, grinding of mobs, and general other things most people end up disliking. Sure its not slow leveling, but at the same time except for a few level gaps there is no real grinding or camping of areas to gain exp. The very thing you criticize wow for, is one of the reasons why other games actually turn away alot of their subscribers
-I hate running instances over and over again at max level, its boring. Well, welcome to fricken real life. There will never be non repetition at the end of a mmo because its simply the end. Developers can't produce enough content to constantly sate the thirst of players who have reached max level. It's a impossibility. People claim world pvp is the solution to this, but in the end world pvp comes down to identifying someones team make up, kicking their butts, and taking points in a area. Is that infinite content? No, it will be slightly different each time, but after playing a pvp game long enough you'll be able to spot and identify who people are, what they are doing quicker, and you and your group will already know how to counter it. It's challenging every fight, but its not unique. You can claim that RP is the real gem behind world pvp. Yet ignore the fact that very few people actually rp compared to the max number of players in that game.
-I hate raiding, it takes too much time, and i don't like having to work with so many people to get gear. Well the problem with this line of thinking is that without raiding, guilds are reduced to nothingness besides a quick match making service. And as blizzard has said before, with 5 players on your team, instances can only get so hard before they become impossible to complete with the team. Seriously try heroic instances in wow atm, they are pretty rough, but doable with a good pug(most of them at least). would you be happier if you needed guild 5 mans to run a series of progressive instances, normal-heroic-epic? With gear that scales high and quick enough that you have to go through complete sets in that difficulty multiple times before going to the next, what about people caught inbetween the tiers, or even casuals, it would be far harder for them to remain in the progression scale
-The community is horrible! Ever think your just a jerk, and you make people act like a jerk because of it? I've leveled a 70 shaman, 63 hunter, 52 warrior, 49 druid, 42 paladin, 36 paladin, and a 30 priest over the course of time since wow has been released. I've encountered my fair share of jerks, as i have in eq2, coh, eqoa, daoc etc. But theres a massive amount of nice fun players. Not everyone has to be 30 years old, working as a nuclear physicist, and sail boats for recreation in order to form a good community. There is nothing wrong with having younger players. They may not be the smartest, nor are they the best players in the game. But if they have fun and are not rude, then why not let them have fun? Why should only the leet be able to play the game, through content designed to be mind numbingly difficult? Is that fun? let alone the "leet/hardcore players" are sucky to actually play with due to their attitude
I had a friend i met on my shaman, a hunter, he was played by a 13 year old i've known since pre bc. We were running blood furnace and i invited a mage, whos about 21(a bit older then myself, am 20 personally) from my guild. The hunter made a few mistakes and wasn't exactly the best typer. And true enough he did wipe us a couple times, but he apologized for his mistakes, he was trying his best. After the run was done the mage started ranting in guild chat "I hate grouping with children!" the guilds like what happened and he goes on about how a idiot hunter wiped them blah blah blah. And I was thinking to myself, you know hes trying, he may not be a uber player but is that any reason to spread a bad reputation about him?
I mean i see alot of immaturity in barrens in my passing, but beyond that i don't really encounter much. I see alot more "elitists" "jerks" and "70 syndrome" then i do idiots.
When it comes down to it, wow is one of the best mmorpgs out there(fantasywise, eve is a entirely different genre that you cant even compare the two in all honesty, eve fanboys will argue that, but who really cares what they think. Best pve ha, never listening to a eve'r again) Why is it? Because its game mechanics are smooth and polished, its content is polished(with some bugs but no mmorpg will ever be bug free) Theres alot of good high end graphics without being too system taxing, and theres alot of unique encounters(more then i ever saw in my stay in either coh or eq2) that make even the 5 mans feel fun.
i often times see alot comparisons to older games like uo and the like. WoWs gameplay is what makes it so successful. There isn't a fantasy/player sci fi game out that surpassed/surpasses it. AC? DAoC? DNL? EQ2? GW? horizons? L2? MxO? PSU? RV? SB? swg? UO? VG? CoH?
The only one that even comes close is coh. But guess what, some of those games do have some better features. But the gameplay comparison for them isn't even close.
I see alot of talk on old uo/swg and all i have to say is, despite some of the things they boasted, as a game they just aren't as fun to play. You'd have to be delusional to even try to say that any of those games actually "plays" better. And until a game that actually "plays" better then wow comes out, it will remain "the big dog", vg failed at that, lotro will fail it(ive heard comparisons that its similar to wow...and trust me they arent even on the same chart when it comes to gameplay) WAR looks promising, but at the same time the gameplay(from the short videos ive seen) does seem archaic.
When it comes down to it, all your old games do alot of things better then wow, but wow has the best actual gameplay. And despite how many promises darkfall AoC etc make, when it comes down to it, the gameplay is what matters, and after playing wow, i doubt most people will suffer through archaic, poor gameplay, for the great features they offer.
Not saying the to be released games are bad(except lotro, its horrible, but what did anyone expect from turbine?), it all comes down to how they play when they are released. Heres to hoping they turn out good, but even if say aoc is the messiah of features and functions, if the gameplay sucks, you won't see me in it!
People hate wow because it's the "cool" thing to do. I mean we all know being leet means you have to be above wow.
That's just so such an absurd thing to say I won't even bother replying to your post.

And despite how many promises darkfall AoC etc make, when it comes down to it, the gameplay is what matters, and after playing wow, i doubt most people will suffer through archaic, poor gameplay, for the great features they offer.
Not saying the to be released games are bad(except lotro, its horrible), it all comes down to how they play when they are released. Heres to hoping they turn out good, but even if say aoc is the messiah of features and functions, if the gameplay sucks, you won't see me in it!
You may want to remove the second sentence, because im my opinion it invalidates anything else you have to say, some people may hate WoW because its the cool thing to do, but many more have valid reasons some of which you cover in the rest of your post.
To make a blanket statement such as you did indicates that you are narrow minded and refuse to say or hear anything bad about the game, whereas the remains of the post indicate you do at least realise there are faults with WoW even though you seem to be wearing rose tinted glasses regarding the faults.
I don't hate WoW - I have nothing but respect for Blizzard and their Warcraft vision. I got WoW in December '04, a month after release, and played it off and on for two years. It's a brilliantly conceived world with a lot to do and is lots of fun. I just got tired of it and was really ticked off when they scrapped the BG ranking system. Yeah, I got BC, played both new races to lvl 30, took my 60 Undead Warrior into the new area, but just couldn't get into it. So I'm done, but I'm thankful for all the great fun I had playing it.
I guessing that most of the people on this that bitch about the WoW community being addicted to the game wouldn't remember when Everquest was the big MMO of the year.
You people seriously make yourselves look like idiots.
Every time a big game comes around, someone has got to hate it just because everyone else likes it. That's really childish.
Can you people grow up and learn that WoW is a game? Maybe you can realize that some of you trip over the popularity of a GAME?
What I think is even worse when people desperately grasp for rational reasons to hate WoW, and most of the time, none of the people can actually think of good reasons. Not to mention a reason that is of their own.
Well hello there Mr. Trolly Troll, from Troll Trollville! Pleasure to me you! Um, did you read any of the posts on this thread before writing your stellar insite?
Pfft, hell with that.
I'm not going to read 10 pages of mostly bullshit, when I can get the point of where this thread is going in about 2 or 3 pages.
I'm seeing your lips moving, but all I hear is Troll speak my man . If your going to make lame ass general statements about a subject, without reading the "10" pages, then from what I see your just trolling. If you would have bothered READING more than one post, you would have seen that people had specific points about the game they didnt like. So how is that consider "hating it because someone else likes it"?
wow is a great game in its own rights, it offers alot to many people and not so much to other people. it certainly isnt the pinnacle of the mmo genre. (every other game was like that too until somthing better came along)
i personally left it because i felt that it lacked somthing that i enjoy .... - immersion -
an mmorpg is generally supposed to be mostly about the rpg (roleplaying game)aspect...its a way to leave any troubles you may have behind and enjoy some hunts or the company of others while playing as a fantasy (or sci-fi) character of your taste. wow gives the illusion of immersion but falls flat on several occasions.
the lack of better customization affects this surely, but it isnt the huge factor.
the lack of player housing also affects this, but again isnt the huge factor.
the lack of player impact on the game itself affects this, but AGAIN isnt the huge factor.
the biggest thing, to me anyhow, is what i like to call the RACE. the RACE to lvl 60 or whatever...the RACE to grab the most awesome gear...the RACE that ends in a finish line most people are obviously wishing they hadnt crossed, or at least crossed so soon. whatever happend to sitting around and chatting with people? the problem with the community is hardly any real communication. sure some people do this on occasion but there is always a nagging sensation that youre missing out on some awesome drop that may not be attainable in the immediate future. (now i realize there are several types of people and there are in fact those who enjoy a good round at the local tavern, but in general this is how it is)
what ever happened to exploring for the heck of it? what happend to taking your time to fully maximize your enjoyment? theyve managed to wipe that idea clean with item dependecy. for example lets say you had an emergency in RL. maybe your grandmother died or some such thing and you have to leave for a week or two. when you get back you are FORCED to bust ass to catch up with everyone else in order to enjoy yourself.
wow is not for me in the long term.it was great for the short term ill give it that.
also, dont forget that people love to complain. its human nature. if they dont like somthing they complain about it. like people who take out their car keys as soon as they exit a store..like they cant get in their pockets at the car? see? i just did it! the 2nd sentence was a completely sarcastic comment, i know thats not the main reason, but here on mmorpg.com youd be hard pressed to prove it wasn't true. My glasses may be a bit tinted. But after going through other mmorpgs... it's kinda hard not to have tinted glasses.
but i'll remove it and edit the end of my first post(didn't seem like it repeated itself as much when i typed it)
*edit* to the post above this one.
I understand what your getting at, but when it comes down to it, people play mmorpgs for different needs. Some such as yourself are looking more for a virtual world where they can have a "second life" in. It's understandable and theres nothing wrong with it.
But theres crowds such as myself, that are looking for a game where they play online in a video game(not a second world) and achieve goals together, achieving level 60, running instances, clearing a hard boss for the first time with your friends, thats something we like doing. Sitting around socializing, walking around various areas just to sight see them, isn't why we truthfully play, its the social aspects of the gameplay, rather then actual socializing apart from the gameplay.
WoW doesn't really cater to your style, and i can see as howd youd eventually grow distant from it.

The only one that even comes close is coh. But guess what, some of those games do have some better features. But the gameplay comparison for them isn't even close.
I see alot of talk on old uo/swg and all i have to say is, despite some of the things they boasted, as a game they just aren't as fun to play.
Much needed edit:
How would he feel?
He would in all likelyhood start crying.
Think about Michael's feelings the next time you praise WoW.

Anyways...had to comment, only my opinion.

"I can't believe how such a crappy game can be more succesful than ..."
Feel free to add more
"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."
~J. Krishnamurti
"People who have had excessive dozes of WoW even though they doesn't play it and are loosing their mind because of it."
Yep that's my category.

Hhhmm...I think I'm beginning to fall into the "Annoyed Grumpy People" category.
edit: spelling
It's like listening to a radio tuned into the WoW station, more like.
For a person so adamant that you don't want to hear about WoW and so desperate to avoid hearing about it, one has to ask the question, what are you doing surfing the WoW forums?
There are plenty of complaints about wow.
AC? DAoC? DNL? EQ2? GW? horizons? L2? MxO? PSU? RV? SB? swg? UO? VG? CoH?
