    And your point is ?

The view distance in EQ2 is good enough...It's still the better looking game and no view distance will change that..Its what is close to you that you see, not a far distant tree or hill..But I agree that if Vanguard looked and worked as good as EQ2 with the combined view it would be better, but...It isnt..

My point? Opinion and taste not withstanding, Vanguard it Technically more advanced, and doing more than EQ2. In most cases, doubling. While achieving a similar quality in graphics (Note: you confuse style with graphic quality).

What is it that is "Better" to you?

    1) More objects in a scene? Larger amounts of polygons/textures per item? Higher resolution Textures (Vanguard uses VERY high resolution textures)?

    2) Or the color pallet? The composition? The style applied to models? The theme?

    # 1 is graphics, #2 is Art direction/design/style.

Vanguard is NOT technically more advanced..part from the view distance I have yet to see anything that is better in VAnguard..

The Water is better..including reflections and underwater feel...Doesnt exist in Vanguard

The shadows are better..dynamic lightning is faaar better

The high resolution textures are far better

The animated cloth is better..doesnt exist in Vanguard

The heat effects on fire and heat, doesnt exist in Vanguard

...And there is more..but that has nothing to do with graphics...

Voice overs, EQ2 has the best voice overs of any MMORPG to date..Lets not mention the silly "Hi and Hello's of Vanguard" Oops I did..

    Better animations and particle effect

    Well..Im sorry ..

Sorry, thark...with both games turned all the way up, VGs water kicks the crap out of EQ2s, hands down, no save.

you are head on about  cloth and heat...why SOE dosent post more shots and videos of Lavastorm I will never get

and, one thing you left out, while both games have reflection, only VG has refaction...and they have used it to good effect in sevral places

In short, both games are very pretty, and pretty much destroy anything else currently available

    LOL.  Are you serious?

While I agree, EQ2 does have nice graphics, Vanguard is definitely the clear winner here.

Here are some EQ2 shots that I have taken during my 2 year time with EQ2..

    EQ2 is better looking..Sorry

    Frigin sweat man.

I like VG and I think it graphics are good.  I hope that over time they build on what they have and as systems upgrade we can see better shading and light on the character models.  That's just the characters though.  The world itself is done INCREDABLEY well in VG, and no other game, I thnk, comes close.

I agree with you 100%.  I don't think anything beats EQ2 in the use of shadows and light; it just makes the character models amazing to look at.  It's the only MMO I've ever played/ play that I stay zoomed in on my character.  AMAZING character models, but a blah enviroment.

If you put the EQ2 models in the VG world you would have the BEST game world ever realised in an MMO.

"The Water is better..including reflections and underwater feel...Doesnt exist in Vanguard"

    Vanguard water

    Eq2 Water.

As you can see, they use the same Techniques. However, there are a few more bells and whistles used in Vanguards water rendering system. Not to mention, larger scale, and the body of water is rendered at a farther distance.

"The shadows are better..dynamic lightning is faaar better"

    Vanguard

    eq2

Please take note of the soft stenciled shadowing in the vanguard image just under the two solders.

And also note the lack of any shadow under the two players in the eq2 shot, other than a subtle blob.

While the lighting is more stylized in eq2, meaning more vibrant colors and hues, its not necessarily "Better" in regards to engine capabilities. The lighting in vanguard is more real world, and less "stylized" or exaggerated.

    "
The high resolution textures are far better"

    Vanguard

As you can see from the shots above, Vanguards Textures are , by a large distance, higher resolution. And that’s not just limited to players.

"The animated cloth is better ..doesn’t exist in Vanguard"

This is correct, there is no cloth simulation in vanguard.

"The heat effects on fire and heat"

This is also true, i have not seen a heat effect in vanguard like that found in EQ2.

However, The images used in vanguard are a higher resolution, and are not styleised.

    Vanguard

** i could not find an example of EQ2's fire, but i know from playing, its looks nothing like real fire, its a very styleised version of it useing a 4 to 3 pronged "Star" like sprite.

Now, i want to go one firther...View distance. Lets compare.

    Vanguard

Seems this continent has a slight overcast, but the fidility of the town is still there, you can still see most buildings in this city.

    Vanguard

In this shot, you can still tell there is a small town over on the lower right shore.

    eq2

This is the farthest view i could find in the batch of screen shots I limited this comparison to.

Very short, and this is a "Zone", nothing in that distance you can get to.

But it does show that eq2 also has stenciled Hard shadows, so it seem they booth have this ability. But I’m quite aware, that all games using the eq2 engine (SWG, EQ@ ETC..) have horrible performance hits when its enabled.

So, i have tried to be as fair as i can, only use exclusive screen shots from developers, which you would assume all have max settings turned on. A few may not on both sides.

The key here, however, that separates the two are the shear about of details, models, high res textures, shaders (including anoscopic (sp?), bloom, spec, normal, bump) are in most shots, Doubled in Vanguard. Using no zones to unload resources, and load in new ones.

So, Conclusion: Vanguard is about (give or take) the same graphical capabilities of eq2, and exceeds it in many cases.

    Discuss.

Just the silhouette reflection of the far shore and lighthouse in that last shot makes a big difference.  I think there must be some sort of bugs preventing Vanguard from rendering reflective water, and they'll be adding it soon.  Vanguard might look a lot better all of the sudden.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I thought Vanguard had the most pretty water in any game I've played before, but that might be because I recently got a new compie and I was able to really turn up the water details in VG where as when I used to play EQII I had most of the graphics turned low.

All in all though, EQII seems to have better character models while Vanguard has beautiful scenery.  I really enjoy the far draw distance in VG and just knowing that you can travel anywhere you can see without zones makes the screenshots all the more sweet.  Like I said though, EQII has really amazing character models, very beautiful.    In the end, it is probably up to the individual which one they like most.

Its fun seeing screenshots of vanguard.  I've been playing it for a couple weeks now and I feel like I know absolutely nothing about the game when I see these screenshots of foriegn lands.

The view distance in Vanguard is nice and all, but it's a slight lie as well. When you run through the landscape bushes pops up, mobs suddenly get visible and players comes out of nowhere. The long distance views doesn't show everything.

Is this also the case of EQ2? (In my opinion, Ryzom does a better job doing just this.)

It's strange, I clicked on this thread to look at the Vanguard screen shots, which I have yet to be impressed with. I wasn't reading the post but instead just clicking the links to view the pictures so when I clicked on your first picture here I was impressed and was about to reply to your post saying that was the best screenshot I've seen yet of Vanguard, but it wasn't until I click on your next picture did I realize these were screenshots of EQ2.

My point? I've been playing Vanguard for the past few weeks now, honestly I would have given up on the game after the first few hours but I've decided to actually give it a change hoping it would impress me at some point but unfortunately it has yet to impress me, and if anything I've gotten more unimpressed and bored with the game.

The graphics are just not that great, and I feel it looks so boring and flat. The character effects and motions look horrible and the game play, landscape and world has just bored me. I can't even get myself to log in today.

I had high hopes for Vanguard, even though I was concerned about the graphics I saw from beta pictures and videos I still wanted to give it a chance because it sounded wonderful but now that I've actually played the game, even on the highest settings (in areas that can handle it) I am 100% unimpressed and disappointed.

I played EQ2 for a while and the graphics were wonderful and my computers had no problems at all running the game on highest settings. I never was able to really get into the game, but this was one it was first released and I haven't been back since the new changes, witch I might have to do.....

Honestly, just from screen shots and my own experience, EQ2 and LOTRO look 100 time better and more beautiful to look at and experience than anything I have seen or experienced in Vanguard. Sorry to say it, but it's my feeling on the matter..

Having played both EQ2 and Vanguard on max settings, I'd have to say Vanguard wins hands down for me.

Really? Well, I disagree. I think that EQ2 screenshot looks not only better but more dimensional than any Vanguard shot I've seen. All the Vanguard screenshots including my own experience playing Vanguard looks flat and ridged where I find EQ2 looks a lot more developed, colorful and.... well, nicer.

Wow, it really does look like an oil painting lol I took a few shots 2 nights ago with the same sort of sky. Hopefully I can upgrade my system some time in the next 2 years so I can take some really sweet screenshots. It's just too much trouble to fix my settings to be bothered to turn them all the way up just for screenshots. I really do love the view distance in Vanguard. Knowing I can travel anywhere I can see just immerses me in a way that hasn't happened since my expectations for graphics were blown away by EQ.

After playing both games, I have to say Vanguard's distance viewing and armour graphics are in my opinion far superior to EQ2.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

im really disappointed.  Heres a thread on Vanguard images and not a single screenshot of Lord of the Rings Online?

but I guess instead we get some EQ2 screenies, which really is a much better comparison.

I thought I would post my own high res images. I took these when I first started messing around with the game so these are still in the newbie area.

These are taken on my highest setting, BUT it is not always possible for me to play the game on the highest settings and I normally have to switch to balanced which looked pretty bland in my opinion.

Truthfully, if I could run the game on the highest setting all the time I would be a lot happier with the graphics, but even then I find the highest setting graphics of EQ2 on my computer to look better.

    Another note....

For some strange reason I find my Vanguard screenshots look better than most of the Vanguard screenshots around this forum, oddly enough.

This is the best screnshot i've seen of the game. This you can see some artistic direction thru the environment. Whoever worked on this part of the world , keep them.
