I played Vanguard beta, but was unable to enjoy the fullness of the graphics because my outdated computer so I can't speak. However, LotR graphics LOOK GOOD, but in actual gameplay they are horrible because the animation weren't done too well. The NPC look worse than the player models. I'm currently playing the game on ULTRA HIGH SETTINGS. The game adds objects to the background/scenario and gives your character more detail, but that's as far as it goes folks.
DO NOT BE FOOLED BY SCREEN CAPS FROM GAMES! This not only applies to LotR and Vanguard, but also any other game.
I know some WoW BC still pictures that look really good as screen caps, but how good it looks in actual gameplay is a different story. It's like the gaming companies are falsely advertising with these still pictures.
I've played the LOTRO beta, and currently play VG, and just want to say that IMHO, that doesn't really apply here. LOTRO does look that good, unless you compare screenshots of the shire with gameplay in the elven starter area. I keep saying those snow-covered mountains areas need major work. Maybe just a fancy blizzard effect to obscure the lack of detail inherent to snow covered mountain areas.
Not sure what you mean about the animations or player/NPC models. I think they're done pretty well in LOTRO. Granted, lot of the combat graphics are average at best, and some of the running animations need work, but some of the emotes look pretty good. Dancing dwarves and the like.
Compared to Vanguard, though? Vanguard has mediocre to horrible animations, in all areas. Like the combat isn't clunky enough, you've got wood elf druid NPCs dancing like they're drunk nerds in an 90s dance club. Oh yeah, that really adds ambience...
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I don't get why people think higher poly counts and higher res textures make for more technically advanced graphics. Anyone can make higher poly models, and bigger textures. Even view distance is just a matter of settings, not some technological feat. The real trick is getting a game to handle all that - which is a trick Sigil hasn't really pulled off at all. So, I'd say LOTRO not only looks better artistically, it's more "technically advanced," because of how well it juggles all the resources it uses.

"LotR isn't running on 3D engine"
Huh???? Someone mind clarifying that? What is it running then, 2D? The whole comparrison doesn't make any sence.
How do you figure the screenies don't match the game? You play both....what are you trying to say? My screenies look better then the ones posted by the company IMHO because I deliberately went looking for scenic shots...
Dunno.....
And the animation thing, I agree that the LotR combat animations are not so hot but to compare it against Van-notdone yet - Saga of Bugs...I get the impression you don't like either game.
What is it you looking for "all" of these games to do? You say it looks great but all it does is what you listed...that doesn't make any sence at all to me....I'm definately not tracking what you are trying to say.
Also, can't wait to get the LOTRO high-res texture pack at release...yay!
I've been playing this game since beta 1. It's got everything any other MMO out there is offering, and far and away the best graphics engine I've seen to date. This looks better than Oblivion!
I'm not a sigil or VSOH hater. I was/am in the beta for both games (was in V:SOH am in LOTRO) so I have played both games up till current (well ok I haven't played V:SOH since it released but I played up till beta ended).
The graphics in V:SOH are very detailed, too detailed, imo. But they are also extremely drab, repetitive and boring. The world lacks color or vibrance. Mind you I don't want comicland (WoW) either. But I do expect my game to have a bit of color and light to it. V:SOH just comes across as dull and uninviting.
LOTR:O, on the other hand, comes across as a beautiful world which really draws you into it. The world may not be quite as detailed but it's PLENTY detailed for even the pickiest of graphics nitpickers. Furthermore the lighting and effects within the world really add to the graphics giving you a true feel of being in a living breathing world. In V:SOH I feel like I'm walking around in a very detailed but drab picture. In LOTR:O I feel like I'm walking in a world.
I have all the respect in the world for the team over at Sigil but I will caveat all of the above with this simple statement:
When Turbine got it's claws into LOTR:O I was extremely upset and very unhappy and really expected the game to be a complete waste. You can dig back through these and other forums and find my thoughts on the matter. I really didn't expect much of anything out of Turbine given their track record. (Which up to now has consisted of 1 mediocre and 2 flops for releases).
Sigil on the other hand I have been an avid fan of. I know many of the members of their team from past work together on EQ1 during beta and release. I have great respect for both their technical and creative ability. I really expected V:SOH to shine... and it didn't.
So no, I'm not a Vanguard Hater. In fact I still think V:soh is an ok game.

Just wanted to reply right here, but what do think LotR is? LotR is just comicland as WoW. The women can have oversized boobs (I'm a girl so I know that's impossible for natural features) while being skinny and the men can have a broad chest, but small hips. Not to mention, the men's feet are oversized.

Who doesn't want to look like the ideal man/woman in an MMO? Men's feet oversized? Maybe you were mistaking a human for a Hobbit. They're supposed to have large feet.

Again, the screen shot doesn't mean crap because it's a still picture. Playing the game and watching screencaps are two different things. When I first saw LotR some of the screen caps look good, but after the game on ULTRA HIGH SETTINGS, I realized still pictures play tricks on the eye. You're still trolling here? My goodness you just can't stop. I don't understand what you mean by the graphics not being good. I'm only playing on medium settings and it looks beautiful! Yes, some of the animations could be redone, yet I do not think the NPCs are as bad as some say. It all looks good to me, and to many others, and has been labeled for great graphics in previews and reviews on various gaming websites. Screen shots do mean something, they show lighting and texture and quality of the models. Of course you can't judge animation from a still picture because its still!
Lets put it this way. All games can use improvement in their graphics because nothing is perfect. Yet LotRO is better than many games out there. Yes Vanguard has detail, but the overall graphics of a game is what matters. LotRO has this done pretty well, but its not perfect.
Also if you consider large boobs as something from comicland, then we're all living in comicland. Go watch MTV. Men with broad chests and small hips? Professional weightlifters. The steroid ones. Anyways, LotRO's graphics are in no way cartoony. Yes they are bright and vibrant, but they don't look like they came from Finding Nemo or something.
Currently: Playing EVE Online Previous: FFXI, Dragonrealms, sad little stint in WOWland. Awaiting: Fallen Earth, Hero''s Journey, Tabula Rasa, Age of Conan.
If we go by screenshots LOTRO looks better, but when you look at it in action Vanguard takes the cake for me. The graphics in LOTRO don't feel consistent, the character models are clunky and awkward to watch, and alot of maps just aren't pretty to look at. Certain character models for Vanguard are pretty boring but on the highest settings the environment is beautiful to look at. The lighting, especially inside buildings and caves are amazing.

Grow up, Jon, you sto trying to pit board members against each other like little kid. It's not his/her opinion you're read into, you just trying to bait me into attack pb1285n. Problem is, we see eye to eye on the VG and LotR issue here. Maybe if you wouldn't confuse your arguements with...well, you know...you wouldn't feel the need to defend your opinion or act so passive aggressive. It's only the small guys I notice who act like this.
Although you and pb1285n might agree, you are both totally different in your approaches. At least he can comment on a game he doesn't like without attacking, name-calling or making false statements.
I'm still hoping you'll be able to have a better day soon.. one that isn't filled with such anger and aggression.

All that is null. Its simple, Vanguard looks like a game that is not complete. Your missing textures, its rushed and it shows. On top of that, you bump map everything, so a lot of the world ends up looking... well bad. You have these GENERATED landscapes...
Lotro is by far and way a better looking game, and i mean in motion not screen caps. Its not a toss up, its not a sudden death match... its a complete BLOW OUT. Lotro > Vanguard
Better in graphics, better in gameplay, better in design. You can have your player made house, your mounted combat... but whats the point when it all looks bad. When the mounted combat is as boring as the standing combat? Animations... do you vanguard people even know what they are?
Stop coming here and posting BS. Stop trying to compare these games, because your nuts.
Before we pass judgments remember LOTRO is a BETA. I just ran the new upgrade and it looks much better than before, models are more detailed, some landscape and architecture changes, particle effects have been added, all kinds of graphical improvements. I will get some screenshots up as soon as I can.

Graphics for any game are overrated. I'd much rather have a game with lower quality graphics but superior gameplay than a game with superior graphics but poor gameplay. I've played the LoTR beta and I'm dissapointed with it. First of all it doesn't run smoothly on my computer even on a low setting. I get a lot of lag that I don't experience in other MMO's unless I'm in a highly populated area. It seems like LoTR is made for brand new graphics cards and if you have one even a few years old(forget about the ancient cards) then you're going to get a lot of lag. The gameplay also isn't anything to brag about. It's mostly a clone of WoW. Crafting may be a little different and they may have added a few other unique things but for the most part it plays just like WoW. Same quest system, same battle system, same skill/training system. If this is the future of MMO's then the future isn't good.

Heh, I don't seem to recall the devs ever mentioning this game was to be revolutionary. No, their goal was to make a solid game. The revolutionary aspect was an expectation you and others put on this that was never promised to anyone. As for how it runs, it runs just fine on my 2 year old dell system so I'm surprised that you are having lag issues, especially if you have updated ALL your drivers and aren't playing on dial up.
That said, I'm far from trying to convince you to like the game. That's 100% your call as it should be. Hope you find something in one of the other games coming out later.

Plain wrong - my GPU is 2,5 years old (X800 series) and LOTRO runs like a dream at 1280x1024, with med/high settings at 35-45 FPS... something is wrong with your config dude - definitiely on of the the biggest strengths of LOTRO is coding (and all betatesters will second that.)

A game can look like crap but be funny as hell (UO anyone)
Vanguards graphics looks a little bit more realistic in some shots where LOTRO seems a bit too sterile but in most of the shots LOTRO looks better.
If i had to wish for some graphical enhancements in LOTRO it would be this.
Realistic fighting animations/sceneraios where the screen is not lit up with fireworks on every special attack.
Make some realistic bloodstains/splats
Make broken armorpieces drop onto the ground sometimes when you whack an Orc in the head.chest, arms, leg etc.
Give armor different textures so it shows how worn down your gear is in combat.
Weapons should break visibly in combat.
Monsters should loose their limbs sometimes in combat.
Arrows should stay imbedded in the monsters/players while the combat last.
I would prefer that kind of graphical combat instead of what we see now.

Currently: Playing EVE Online
Previous: FFXI, Dragonrealms, sad little stint in WOWland.
Too bad neither game is any fun to play.
Your point?
If you don't have retort then don't reply.
Who doesn't want to look like the ideal man/woman in an MMO? Men's feet oversized? Maybe you were mistaking a human for a Hobbit. They're supposed to have large feet.
The man said he didn't want a cartoonish look and you reply isn't helping any. Ideal man or woman is a cartoonish concept, which contradict his stance on not wanting comicland graphics.
See how big my feet are in this pic? Not.
Based on your posting history, you're just here to troll.

Why do you even bother to post? You interject false statements to replies that don't even involve you.
Must be hard having all that anger penned up inside. You really should find an outlet for it.
Here's hoping tomorrow is a better day for you and you'll actually find something nice to say.

I salute you! (even though I think LOTRO's graphics and animations are far better than Vanguard's) /grin
Maybe Lastera will learn a thing or two from your post.

JonMichael, I read you said, "Maybe Lastera will learn a thing or two from your post. "
Then immeditely after that, I saw this:
Dangit, now you scared off the only female troll I've ever seen
The polls say it all BTW. All 3 of them
