Am i the only one that thinks LOTRO is just a boring WoW clone

this game imo is just another WoW clone that isnt as user friendly and just has a clunky UI/HUD. i only got to play it for a few hours but its gonna be hard to try it again, because i just had no fun playing it, does it get any better in the higher levels?

Nah, I saw the similarities as well when I played it. I honestly was looking forward to it since I wanted something new. But with the way some of teh things were implemented (the water and the running for example) It just made me uninstall it almost immediately. Some of the story lines were ok though.

I thought so too. I was in LOTRO beta since beta 1 and through out the time kept coming back to see if anything was changed for the better. Unfortunately it hasn't. The game sadly is a subpar WoW clone.

    Whats wrong with the water?

If anything, the water in the game is fantastic. It really impressed me that if i did a top down view on a clear lake I saw not only my shadow on the lake bottom but the reflections of the clouds.  Go to the swamp and try the same thing and you don't see the shadow or bottom of the water due to it being murky water.  Hit the correct angle and the sun reflecting off the water would be almost blinding.

Maybe you didn't have reflections on?  If you don't the water does look bad. Even putting reflections on low will get you the good water. High just gives you more, lillies floating etc.

Edit: Found a shot of the water

I remember when people were calling WoW , just another boring EQ clone. I wonder if in a couple of years people will be calling some game  " just another boring LoTRO clone" Best part about LoTRO is it can be as easy as following the quests solo, or doing the group quests, but if you really want your character to be the best possible you have to get the traits by a combination of exploration, mob grinding, and skill usage . In other words the game is as easy or as hard as you care to make it.

Wether is really is a WoW clone or not seems like a question that will never be resolved. Not that there is anything wrong with asking the question, I just think it might be hard to truely get some good debate going. I think LOTRO gives a WoW like experience but in the scenes of Middle Earth which to some is all that matters.

Dont burn LOTR, at all, they did something here they created an MMO related to the largest played MMO and changed into the LOTR world, that should be a good thing, dont lie to me WoW is fun, it just is, I hate it just as much as the next ex-wower, but it g oes like this, if you want the next game to be super, its gonna have things related to WoW, wanna know why, 8.5million is your answer, LOTR is different, new graphics, new skills, new classes, sure its gameplay is the same, I dont mind its not WOW thats all im looking for, sure some people are a little more in detail.

Please see it through my eyes quickly.

Combat - Auto, you click skills WHAT GAME DOESNT DO THAT, well some but hey its a very popular combat system

Reflex- Every game has it, counterspell, stuns, traps, things like that hence WoW isnt the first

Graphics- WoW is a cartoon warcraft world art, LOTR is a LOTR Art, so dont complain

Classes- Sorta different, every game is the same, you know what

LOOK- Every single MMO IS THE SAME, ALL OF THEM, if you look hard enough, they are all the same, they have different extras, it comes down to this

Quest/Grind/Melee/Caster/Ranged/Tank/Healer/Mobs/Bosses/Instances/UBER ITEMS THEY ARE THE SAME

Sorry, im kinda tired, just want to make a point, that yes every game is gonna be like WOW in one way or another, I think the only way to stray away from WoW, is if we stop playing MMOS, and go play Wario Ware on Nintendo Wii.

Well, what features do you think are in lotro which are cloned from wow?  Now, just to be specific, these features must have originated in WoW and not existed prior to WoW in any other game for it to qualify as a cloned feature.

    Another wow clone?

Not that I even agree with that, but what other games are you talking about?

Please list all WoW clones for me, thanks.

I don't know if your the only one that thinks that but I can tell you one thing for sure, I am REALLY sick of hearing the phrase

    "WoW" clone.

"Is that a tuna sandwich your eating?  OMG, thats SUCH a wow clone!!"

...and "just another WoW clone" at that.. lol

I just want to see the list of WoW clones.. and there better be one!

It's this line that leads me to believe we are being trolled.   The alternative would be cause to question a certain person's ability to think for themselves.

You are not the first person to say that. You are a phrase cloner!!!

But I agree, sick of hearing it too!

having played all the mmo's up to this point. I have to admit that lotro is the best offering currently available.

i actually think its a few leagues ahead of wow, but it takes time ingame to see the finer details.

    for instance:

in wow your skills upgrade simply by levelling up. Moonfire rank11 anyone?

in lotro, once you get the skills you have to skill them up, so theres no new tiers of the same thing over and over. Each skill is useful forever, and if you dont use it, it doesnt advance.

in wow you get 1 point per level adter 10 to spend on your tree to make the toon you want.

in lotro you get 17 traits which are differentiated from common, class, race and legendary, all which have very individual ways of getting each trait that has nothing to do with the actual levelling system.

these are two examples of how lotro is more advanced gameplay wise than wow.

alot of people write off lotro but that doesnt mean it doesnt have the goods. It does. I wont even go into the areas of the storyline, graphics or quest/instance design because wow cant even compete in those categories.

i played wow for over a year and like that game, but lets be realistic. Lotro is a better core game that wow.

WOW clone eh? I suppose some folks might think that..... but it has some differences...

    1) WOW has quests... LotRO has boatloads of them..in fact, you will do all of your leveling from quests...and none from grinding... (though you might grind for cash)

    2)  Deed system for completing tasks... more of a COX feature than WOW....

    3)  Monster Play, totally different than WOW or anything else really.

    4)  LotRO characters/lore (ok, its not a Middle earth simulation...but the Shire really feels like the Shire...)

    5)  Burglers (rogue class) are actually desired by groups for their debuffs and conjuctive attack initiation skills, and not dps

    6)  The best gear in WOW is obtained from end game raiding.... not true so much in Lotro (yet)

    7)  You can make a living as a farmer ..  :)   (hey some folks seem to like it)

    8)  Very mature gaming community...far better than WOW's or even VG's...  a haven for role-players

So while the interface is somewhat similar ( I don't find it clunky) overall its a pretty fun game for someone who enjoy's WOW (or enjoyed it in the past).  If you hated WOW...you're going to probably hate this game as well.

Oh yes...and while Darkfall might garner a decent niche market (if it ever releases) it will never be a WOW killer.... no FFA PVP game ever will be....

What exactly did WoW bring to the market that was new or innovative? You can't call LOTR a WoW clone unless WoW actually has some new, unique idea...

^I agree with everything you said excep the if you hate WoW.

I hate WoW with a passion.  Its amazing how much I hate that game.  Its overrated, quests don't draw me in, graphics are not my style, fighting sucks ballz... Now LOTRO is different then WoW in many aspects.   So I agree with everythign above except the if you hate WoW you'll hate LOTRO not true.

I'd say it's a lot more like WOW than I'd like, but wouldn't go so far as to call it a clone. It is different in a lot of ways, even if it's similarly shallow. I think one of the reasons it'll do really well is the combination of a mega-IP, and simple shallow fun gameplay. Course, I'd rather something deeper that'd probably end up being a niche game, though :)

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I wouldnt say its a clone either.

however, it does have a pez-dispenser quest system, incredibly small world and very limited crafting system.  like WoW-Light

its missing too much to be a clone

well i guess thats what i get for bashing a game. but you see i played WoW on and off for about a year, im not going to lie i did have fun with wow for a while but soon realized that it is just the same repetitive quest over and over again.  for this reason ( and a few others) i quit wow, with a bad taste in my mouth. and since LOTRO came out it just has that same feel as WoW, same boring, repetitive quest ( although they did improve on them a little with some good quest) i thought the social aspect was done a little better in wow ( just flowed better imo) there are several other things that turned me off from the game like the UI (but that could be fix with custom skins) and just the over all feel of the game just felt like wow to me regardless of the new elements. now im not stupid i know that wow didnt invent the world as we know it, but they improved on the existing formula enough to where 8.5 million ( i think its around there) agree. maybe my opinion is a bit biased but oh well its my opinion, and i dont really expect anyone to care

I wouldn't call it a clone, but I definitely agree on the boring part, and extremely derivative of WoW.

  • SamuraiswordSamuraisword Member Posts: 2,111
Yes it's boring. Dull as dishwater.

Don't sweat it. Some people are so devoid of real and meaningful connections, they tie their identity to a game. So, when you crticise their "game du jour" they feel threatened and feel as if you're attacking them. These people will then attack you wether you have a valid point or not. Instead of focusing on the content of your post, they focus on something that can be ambigously argued. Ignore them for the sad, pathetic exuses of humanity that they are and look for input from those that have a little objectivity.
