Another reason for the amount of animosity at WoW is because the game has redined the MMORPG genre.
Whether or not you like the game, there is no denying that the history of MMORPGs will be marked by the pre-WoW and post-WoW eras.
Some people don't like how the genre is changing to appeal to more gamers so many hate WoW because of that and long for the 'good old days' when MMORPGs were considered a niche market by the rest of gaming industry and something of a joke.
WoW has redefined nothing. how can you redefined something thats been done before. WoW is nothing new. and pre WoW and post WoW eras? that just sounds stupid im pretty sure history will ignore this games. its not like its payed attention to any other games in the past. except pong. since pong was the father of all games. but theres not going to be some WoW history couse when i go to college i can say that much. it sounds to me like you like WoW alittle too much.
and people missing the good old days? all of those people have left mainstream games and moved down to runescape. thats where all the oldies are. either that or their playing eq2. most people like the direction the market is goin in. now people can relate to more people online. instead of having level 70 paladin nerds(u kno with the zit covered faces, countless anime novels, and pictures of dragons covering their binders) fill your ears with mumbo jumbo that you dont understand. now the game industry is for every one. WoW didnt do this. other games did this. games that came before it(cant name any examples upfront). but im sure that someday there will be a better game that will come along and whoop WoW's ass. god knows when it will come. i hope it comes soon though. because like any good mmo WoW will get boring. no matter how much you deny it. it will get old. and something new will have to come along.
but if thats really what you think then dude you need to get out more.
average doesn't say much really... For all I know there could be a bunch of 2 years old and a bunch of 60 years old... which would then confirm my previous statements that there is a need to be a retard to play the game...

That's totally biased... WoW SUCKS END OF STORY!!!!
The only reason Wow picked up so many players is because of the warcraft trilogie.
Let's see what is Wow? 60 people pvp WOW!!!!! Shitty characters design... outdated graphics and very kiddiish...
Dumb ass missions... slow reaction rates needed... and goes on and on and on... don't go about instances and battlegrounds concept cos those totally sucked ass
Pre-Wow and Post-Wow??? If Wow was the first mmorpg you played well fine there is Pre-Wow and Post-Wow for you...
Well first of all if you havent ever been to lv60 (nowadays 70 with TBC) and endgame. I honestly urge you to try it, specially if you liked the pre-60 (70) content. All games have their pros and cons. I myself have given up on WoW before TBC, but even before that i played from closed beta up untill 2 months from TBC release, so i know what im about.
Try it again if you liked it or don't try, it's all up to you! Word of advice tho, all that there really is beyond the levelcap is raiding (or pvp if you're into it - repetetive battlegrounds, world pvp = non-existant) and raiding is all about doing the same hours long instances in the hopes of maybe getting "the best armor in the game" for your class and be warned, this WILL take months!
I don't hate WoW, I hate WoW players for being so stubborn to think WoW is god's gift, and I hate other MMO companies for not being able to produce a better game than WoW. It's just easier to say I hate WoW.
Wow was alright, but I saw it as just the next EQ Clone with some friendlier features. I enjoy other games (GuildWars mostly) and personally, I'd never argue if someone says they like WoW better. That's fine. It's when WoW players infest our forums and complain about things like no races or no jumping I get irritated....it's like saying Metroid sucks because Super Mario Brothers had Question Mark boxes that gave you power ups.
But I respect WoW players, have had my time in it, still have it installed on my PC in case I ever want to go back.
The reasons I wasn't too fond of it:
1) The Horde is such a cool side; but the Wastelands is such a dull area. It fits the story but man, I've seen harsh wilderness areas in other games that absolutely rocked, with worst graphics even.
2) I gave Alliance a shot, and personally I couldn't feel them. WoW came off too much like the pretty boys and fancy shiny races vs. the freaks. Taurens will always have a soft spot in my heart. But I couldn't understand why the vicious Orcs were allowed to ally with such a cool, down to Earth race (Sorry, flashbacks to Warcraft II with the orc setting the bodies on fire).
3) The pacing of the game felt too much like Blizzard wanted to get a subscription out of me.
Maybe I'm just spoiled by Guildwars and 9Dragons knowing my characters will be there no matter how long I'm away
Not hating the game, just not playing it.
Cheers.
PS -- I have several reasons why people should play it. It's popular, tons of people to meet, the TAURENS RULE, fairly good system requirements, always something to do....so there, not a flame post.
Popular things always get flamed. It's human nature. Many people like to be unique, so they flame anything that's popular to distinguish themselves from others. WOW has the biggest player base, which means most people still like it.
Myself I don't hate WoW, but I hardly believe it is worthy of the hype it tends to recieve. WoW is not bad, but its not that good either. In the grand scheme of things MMO it is simply average. Yes it is hugely successful, but it is not successfull because its the best MMO ever. WoW's success is due in large part to the huge following Blizzard create in the 90s with the likes of Diablo, Warcraft and StarCraft. Many of these fans simply bought the next Blizzard product which in this case happened to be an MMO. When you compare WoW to Diablo II, which is the Blizzard game it most closely resembled, its a clear evoultionary step forward in gaming. So all these long term Blizzard fans who were mostly first time MMO gamers really enjoyed the game. They told their friends and so on and so on. You end up with an MMO dominated by millions of first time MMO players. Yes they think the game is fun, which it is, but they have no other MMOs that they can judge it against. Such gamers have no basis to call WoW a great MMO as they don't have any frame of refrence.
Yes WoW is fun and it is certainly a very well polished game. However it is not a great MMO. Many of the true MMO elements are missing, and honestly it didn't really introduce anything groundbreakingly-original to the MMO genre. WoW lacks some of the depth and dimension that many of us have come to love in other MMOs. The crafting is simplistic and allows for no variety of quality in crafted goods. The economy is rather limited, and it is based more on looted goods rather than player created goods. The game can be played entirely solo until end-game raiding. You can grind just fine from 0-70 without ever having been in a single group. The game does not encourage group play until end-game. The world simply isn't that massive when you really have a look at it. Yes there is no such thing as dead or empty space in WoW, but the world isn't nearly massive enough for my likes. There is no housing of any kind, instanced or static. There are no guild halls. The game is not really as social and community driven and other MMOs past and present. Role play is virtually non-existant. Character customization is extremely limited. The first expansion took a long time to come out, and honestly it really didn't add anything to the substance of the game. Burning Crusade simply added more of the same. It was in effect a really big content patch that you paid for. Other than flying mounts the game wasn't added to by the expansion. There are just new raids dungeons and new battle grounds to fight in. I could go on with a few more examples, but the point is made.
WoW is a great game. Only a fool would think otherwise. Only a great game could capture 8 million people who are willing to pay a fee each month to play. But again is it a ground breaking MMO or a great MMO? No its not. WoW is a great game, but only an average MMO.
Why even discuss why people hate WoW, if you dont like it, move on, play another game, there are MILLIONS
Way ahead of you there, Sparky. You are absolutely correct that there are many other MMORPGs (although millions is a bit of an overstatement), and many of those games are quite a bit of fun. As you can see from my Signature, I play several games currently, and so quitting WoW won't really dig into my gaming time at all. In the long run, I'll save some money, too.
Win/Win for me!
Currently playing: LOTRO, Rift (beta) and WoW (on occasion)
WoW is kinda like the Spice girls of the MMORPG world. They sold milions of copies of there albums but you can ask anyone and they would never admit to owning one. Even tho they where cute and fun (during there time of course) they where the pop lite group. WoW is MMORPG Lite of the MMORPG world. I tried like 3 times to get into wow and each time i couldent. The millions of Chuck norris reference the Endless Dule requests and Tons of Horrible Horrible names and guild names "I was with your mom" guild
or Tbaging the gnome mage.
I just tried again and I got in it. The names Still bother me but I just report them and move on.

Hehe nice one, myself too, i do play WoW, but i also play GW, and other games not MMO's like oblivian, morrowind (game will never die for me) and many other RPG"S, some FPS's etc. etc.
I dont understand how some people can complain about one game, i cant name one game that i can play day in day out every day for the rest of my life, i can play a game once, leave it for a while come back to it (like morrowind ), and if dont like the game then i scrap it, hey not every game is for me (for instance Civilization builders - Stronghold etc.). I dont find the point in complaining. To all you guys that flame WoW, hey whatever you dont like it, the people who do like it dont care btw, find a new game, move on with your gaming experience, im sure there is a game out there for you that you will enjoy!
I don't hate Wow, but when you really get down to it, it is a very dumbed down MMO that really falls flat on it's face when you get to the end game. You are expected to live in the game if you raid, and 90% or more of the playerbase has no time to do that. So you get a lot of resentment from players at the endgame who cannot take the next step.
*whistles* 6 posts deleted? i wonder what these guys said that ticked off who ever manages this..
oh and for the record WoW sucks.
just looking at this thread i could write a book about why WoW sucks. and make it the best selling book in america. but im too lazy to do a thing like that...
all i really want to say is... play WoW, then play a better looking higher rated game(GW, eq2, etc<way better looking games than wow>) you will notice a difference. especially with guild wars. the community in guild wars is alot nicer. why is this?. when gw first came out customer service was ready. ready for the countless reports of jackassess poluting the game. it took a few months but they weeded out all the jackassess. and thats where their nice community of helpful people comes from. and why it has fewer players than WoW. blizzard on the other hand was only concerned with getting subscriptions. making money so to speak(nothing personal towards blizzard). so they ignored alot of the pleas from players complaining about jackassess. and now theres no repairing the games community.
so yes they have the largest player base but is it any good? whats the good in having 80,000,000 players when 70,000,000 of them are jackassess and angry 10 year olds. and raiding is basically a commitment. its like that guy thats really good at halo..tsquared. he wanted to start his own halo team. straight whippin. he dropped out of highschool to do this. it was a commitment. it would take up all of his time. i kno guys that have quit their jobs to raid. i kno guys that have left school and not come for weeks just because of a raid. my question to these people whove left jobs and schools for WoW(also extending this question to tsquared) whats going to happen when World of Warcraft...dies? (tsquared whats going to happen when halo...dies?<i dont see that happening ne time soon though>). youll be left with nothing. no job. no education.
realize this. things spawn they get big then they die. its human nature. people are born they grow and get big and they die. fact.
and to those guys that are playing WoW saying thats its the best thing since deli meat...its their first MMO dont pay attention to them they just want to make you feel bad about your mmo. they gloat about what they have. causes a big envy problem...:(
and why would you pay 15 bucks for a game youve already payed 50 bucks for? its retarded. the game isnt even that good. its like starting a website. using a crappy template, neglecting the site, never updating it, and putting a crappy forum on it. and then asking people for donations. rude one, and two no ones going to give money to something they see no potiential in. WoW looks..not that great...i wouldnt give money to it. the community is not good. i wouldnt give money to it either.
alot of people think some people hate WoW because they dont have the money to play it...not so true. maybe they just dont want to pay to play a game that looks like its a suiped up toon town.
and i wouldnt want to play a game that has a community of scammers. people selling ingame items for actual money. id rather not do that. and get my credit card information stolen.
WoW just isnt the place to be really. i dont like it. i never will. and the characters especially the dwarf girls look like midgets on crack. and their dances are retarded.
in the long run. i dont like wow because its not a good game. and its not free to play which pissess me off.
personally I like WOW. But for different reasons. I like it because it has introduced millions of people to a hobby I love... MMO gaming. It's simpler game dynamics and easy on the PC engine have made this type of gaming accesable to many people. I only played WOW for 14 days on a trial account, it's not my cup of tea, but I think it serves an important role in this game realm. Hopefully as these folks evolve and look to new games, the whole industry will benefit.
I don't hate WoW, I just got really tired of the ultra demand to keep up, you HAVE to raid nearly everyday to progress as fast as any other guild, and some times there is major compitition for gear (ie mageblade can be used by mage, lock, and pld so it's like GRR). For the 2 years I played it, pre-BC, it was pretty good beside the server crashes, bugs here and there, demandingness of it, and HORRIBLE (possibly the worst I've ever seen) community.
To be honest, WoW was good, but truely the player base will never go down drasticly. They put way too much in the characters to stop playing. I had to sell my acc for a low price (too lazy to do a real sale and it was to stop playing anyway) because I couldn't bring my self to delete it.

Play it or don't, it's that simple.
i agree completely. "HORRIBLE(possibly the worst i've ever seen) community. very beautiful statement.
Wow was one of the best games I played. 1 - 60 had a lot of memories for me on all the characters I played. But the game has serious faults that you dont see until you get to the endgame then its downhill very very fast.
A crafting system that is beyond a joke, what really got me thinking wft on the crafting system was that if you wanted to put the effort and time in crafting and make really good gear you had to be raiding with all the materials bop. It kind of begged the question if im in a guild raiding why the hell would I be crafting? Just plain barmy.
If you got into a guild 99% of guilds are run by kids or what was worse - supposedly mature adults who treated people like complete shite, granted running a guild isnt easy and a lot of the players act like morons, but officers and leaders just treated everyone like crap.
The biggest issue was the community. One word. It sucked. I met some very nice people, who I do still miss, but most were selfish immature idiots with an IQ of a labotomised Neanderthal.
In the end I was fed up of being treated like crap, mainly by the players themselves. I go to work to get treated like crap, but there is a consolation. I get payed for it.
see, im not the only one that thinks the community is crap. and people treating you like shit is terrible. they should know better. thats why i hate WoW. why play a game where people treat you like crap. if i wanted to be treated like crap id get a crap job with a crap boss.
I dont play wow I have only seen it been played and only spoken to people that play the game. They say its fun while being boring. Well most mmorpg's get boring at times. But what I dont like about wow is the risk/reward system. There is no risk and just reward. Its a grind to get rewards its a grind to get better. I dont like the fact that a lvl 10 rogue wont beat a lvl 15 rogue. Some of you may think thats silly, a lvl 15 should always beat a lvl 10. I dissagree totally, i believe the player skill should be the majority chance between life and death. Skills just enhance that chance. I dont like the classes and how unoriginal and should i say how simular each race can be. Yeh one could use magic while the other can be stealth but at the end of the day, the fighting system is very simular to each race. I dont like the fact that you cant cross train. EG why cant i make a mage rogue, or a stealth warrior or whatever, why? And if i get bored of that why cant I train for something else? I dont like the cummunity, I often come here to have a laugh at what some of you guys have to say.
I dont believe the game is innovative, the players dont feel like apart of the world, you either feel apart of your guild or just feel small in a big map. The pvp looks shocking, mainly due to risk and reward system. So you instead go to battle grounds to get your pvp thrill. Why cant guilds take over cities and defend them? I have read so many great ideas for wow from you guys that would never be included in the game.
Simply this, if blizzard didnt make wow and it was a small 100k player game, this game would rock cause these great ideas would be included, balancing would be better, the devs will work with you guys to make the game thats perfect. Instead all you have is an outdated game that you pay a lot for and have to pay for crappy over rated expansion packs. I honestly believe that most of you guys that play wow dont play it cause you love it, you play it cause you pay for it. That may sounds silly but think about it. It keeps you occupied and as long as there is another lvl you can level up or a special weapon you can collect you will pay for the game. Instead you dont look at other options.
TBH a mmorpg is a game that you should be very angry when you die. You should be noticed and feel like your apart of a game. If you dont feel that then you just playing battlefields 2.
Why people hate World of Warcraft? I woulden't say they hate it. I, in my opinion, finds it so boring that I can't stand it, but still I don't hate it! It's boring because of the lack of imagination. There's no chance you can do anything crazy-like. You can not own cities, wich in my mind sounds funny! (like in Lineage II but... better handled?) The fact that you can't kill your own kind - ANNOYING!! This kid stalks me as I run thru Orgrimmar, asking me for money calling me god knows what. What if you could turn around, bash his head in and kick him between the legs and walk away? No, not gonna happen... we lock you all in a small area where you can kill eachother and fight a never ending battle. Sure, the ignore button works fine but still. He's still alive, bothering someone else! It just buggers me mind. And what's the deal with the Burning Crusade? Sure, you get new landscapes, hurray! Now you also get new classes - "lets even out the game lads, lets give allies and hordes the very same classes so that the only difference is the smell of 'em!"
Now it's true that World of Warcraft has the most imature community to be found - no joke. I've been around for a long time, played most of the games out there and WoW was the most disapointing one. The graphics diden't bother me too much, still don't. What bothers me the most is the "go there, come back - get a cookie" sort of thing they have going. It's a dead-end game and I reckon you better get out of it before you stand there with the best gear and realises you've just lost about 2 years of your life, 6 months (?) infront of the compy, days & weeks that you will never see again, and to what point? I do feel an urge to start playing again but I keep reminding myself that each day inside there, is like a deja vu. Peace people, hope I diden't flame - argue with me if u like I care not

all i really want to say is... play WoW, then play a better looking higher rated game(GW, eq2, etc<way better looking games than wow>) you will notice a difference. especially with guild wars. the community in guild wars is alot nicer. why is this?. when gw first came out customer service was ready. ready for the countless reports of jackassess poluting the game. it took a few months but they weeded out all the jackassess. and thats where their nice community of helpful people comes from. and why it has fewer players than WoW. blizzard on the other hand was only concerned with getting subscriptions. making money so to speak(nothing personal towards blizzard). so they ignored alot of the pleas from players complaining about jackassess. and now theres no repairing the games community.
so yes they have the largest player base but is it any good? whats the good in having 80,000,000 players when 70,000,000 of them are jackassess and angry 10 year olds. and raiding is basically a commitment. its like that guy thats really good at halo..tsquared. he wanted to start his own halo team. straight whippin. he dropped out of highschool to do this. it was a commitment. it would take up all of his time. i kno guys that have quit their jobs to raid. i kno guys that have left school and not come for weeks just because of a raid. my question to these people whove left jobs and schools for WoW(also extending this question to tsquared) whats going to happen when World of Warcraft...dies?
WoW just isnt the place to be really. i dont like it. i never will. and the characters especially the dwarf girls look like midgets on crack. and their dances are retarded.
in the long run. i dont like wow because its not a good game. and its not free to play which pissess me off.
id rather play a free 2 play game.
