When I was in the fifth grade I got made fun of for being fat...then I changed my eating habits and started taking tae kwon do...by the time I was in the 8th grade I was 6'2'' and 165 pounds...I was a skinny little bastard, and got made fun of for THAT (the phrase, "tall lanky piece of shit" comes to mind) Then I started lifitng weights in high school and nobody has made a comment about my body size other than "stop lifting weights you look like you're on steroids" and that's good for my ego anyway so I encourage that. Anyway, what you did was wrong, we all know that...I doubt you'll have a chance to apologize to him directly, but if you do, you should...an apology can go a long way. Yes, in all likelyhood, it's not because of genes or medicine that he is overweight, and his weight probably is mostly caused by his poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyle...BUT it's not your place to riticule him, and you obviously know that, seeing as how you had a "ahh man I feel like crap" moment afterwards.

One of the points brought up is that lets say there is a smoker in your vicinity. None of us would think anything of saying "Dude, put your cigarette out." When we have loved ones who smoke, we typically try to get them to quit. Smoking is not socially acceptable because it is unhealthy.
Why is being obese any different? Obesity in America increases the costs of health insurance, kills tons of people each year, and has all sorts of hidden costs to society (you know, the rising weights of people increases the cost of flying? Their added weight makes it less fuel efficient to fly), yet no one says "Put down that hamburger!" and we dont have special sections in restaurants; "Fat people" and "Non fat people." Being obese shouldnt be socially acceptable. It is just as bad as smoking and we give smokers a hard time.
It is sad that there are so many people dying of starvation in this world and people in the West (primarily in the US) just keep getting fatter.
Now, this isnt to say that it is right to make fun of someone for being fat. You shouldnt cause anyone emotional pain. I am just saying that we as society shouldnt say "Oh, its okay to be fat because so many of us are," and make it socially acceptable because being obese is a choice (yeah, you arent "big boned," and your metabolism may be slow... but believe it or not, its the fact that you are sitting in front of the TV all day chomping down Krispy Kremes all day thats making you fat. As one of my teachers in high school said [rather cruelly, I might add] "There were no fat people in Aushwitz") and it affects us all. My dad is obese, and we care less about his feelings than we do about the fact that he's probably going to get a heart attack and die before me or my brother has any children.
I agree in that it should not be socially acceptable. But where do you draw the line? By some medical standards, at 6'2'' 230 pounds, I am obese...BUT those charts don't take muscle mass into account, so I would be considered obese, but I'm not fat at all! Does the government have the right to tell people whether or not they are allowed to gain weight? Absolutely not, no more than they have a right to tell people to stop smoking (Not that they really want that anyway, the tax revenue is insane)
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
Well, they dont just want people smoking for the tax revenue. Tobacco companies are big lobbyists... and politicians need to win campaigns...
I disagree that the government cant do anything to regulate obesity. Now, I am not saying they should say "You are obese... get on the treadmill till you're regular weight!" What they should do is impose taxes on fast food, which causes alot of our obesity. Nutrition education should be provided to kids from a young age, so they will know that they are in just as much danger from that Big Mac as they are from that pack of cigarettes (look what education has done to smoking rates). Meat should be taxed heavily to encourage people to consume more non-meat foods. Perhaps they could even provide subsidies to companies who make healthier food while denying those subsidies to companies making unhealthy food. Give tax breaks to people who dont own cars and use bicycles or their legs to get around (this would have the added bonus of limiting oil usage). Maybe even give tax breaks who arent obese, providing an added incentive to stay in shape. These are things the government could do to curb obesity without doing anything directly to obese people, but doing things to make it harder to become obese.
But informal social control probably would help a good deal too.
That seems weird that they dont take your muscle mass into account when determining whether you are obese or not. That seems pretty dumb, because I bet Arnold in his prime would've counted as obese then. That is something that probably should be changed.
Taxation is not going to lower the obesity levels of this country, how many people quit smoking cigarettes due to increased taxes? I don't know a single person who did...and I don't know the official numbers on how responsive the smoking community has been to increased taxes, but my guess would be that it has done very little to fight the problem. I really think it's a societal thing, not a government thing.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
While the number of smokers (i.e. addicts) was unaffected by cigarette taxes, there isnt really a way to measure how it prevents future smokers. I smoked for awhile, but I quit entirely because I couldnt afford to keep smoking. At almost $6 a pack, it just wasnt economically viable for me to smoke. Alot of my friends are the same way.
And well, why do people usually eat fast food? 1. Because they are in a rush to get from point A to point B and they need something fast. 2. Its cheap. Take away the cheapness of McDonalds and Burger King and make healthier fast foods viable, you might see a decrease in fast food consumption. Even if it doesnt cause a decline in fast food consumption (it probably will, cmon... I dont think I could count the times in high school me and my friends only had three or four dollars each and we wanted food, and that meant fast food), it would give the government a nice source of revenue which could be turned around and used on social services, maybe to educate people not to eat the damn chicken McNuggets.
I just don't see it as having any recognizable effect on the obesity levels, any attempt by the government wouldn't be based on a really solid theory anyway, since past experience with cigs has showed us that taxation doesn't stop people from doing things that they like to do. In fact, it would have to be done in spite of evidence to the contrary, and I don't know how many people would go for that. Cigs were something that everyone could get on a high horse about, unfortunately, almost everyone eats fast food now and then, so society as a whole just wouldn't get on board with it.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

I'll bet he knows how to use the words there/their/they're properly, quite unlike yourself. You stupid illiterate kid, frickin bloody moron...
Sucks to have someone point out a mistake you made and rub it in your face doesn't it? I have friends who are overweight and if I saw or heard anyone making fun of them behind their back I would punch them in the teeth. I don't get why people can't find some other way of amusing themselves that doesn't hurt anyone else in the process.
The same could be said of your friends. Imagine when they all die of heart disease... that is going to hurt alot of people alot more than jokes really could. Not that he did a good thing by making fun of that kid, he certainly didnt. Im just saying.

good.
btw...if you are going to make fat jokes, it's your responsibilty to make sure the target can't hear you. if you slip up then you deserve all the guilt you feel (and notice you mostly feel guilty when you get caught..).
the same goes with race, religion and handicapp jokes.

When I said overweight I didn't mean 13,000 pounds, probably 250-270 at the most. The problem is that idiot kids like the OP don't give a shit about whether or not their words personally affect the target of their ridicule, I'll bet you that the guy they were making fun of might have been a bit tubby at the most. It is not a real health issue to be tall (about 6 feet) and approx. 260 lbs; By the way, you don't have to be fat to die of heart disease, the OP was at the same BK joint as the person they were making fun of...
A coronary doesn't care if you're 200 lbs overweight, or if you run a marathon every weekend.
Couple salient points made in this thread, though. I do find it interesting that people will have interventions for drugs, alcohol, gambling, and any other number of addictions, but will make excuses for someone that's obese up one side, and down the other. Yes, some people are genetically more likely to be overweight, or have diabetes, thyroid problems, etc. Or are on meds that cause them to gain weight. But in every one of those cases, exercise and healthy eating habits would keep them at a healthy weight. But not eating sugar laden junk food is hard. Cooking yourself a decent meal is hard, when there's always a fast food joint nearby, and time is short.( Eating at home would also save you a load of money, as well.)
That being said, the OP should worry less about feeling guilty, and more about being grateful he didn't get his ass kicked in. If I were the kids father, or even just sitting within earshot, I'd have drug you, and your lil chickenshit friends, outside and given you a swift curb stomping in the hope that it might teach you the proper manners that your parents obviously didn't.
If you're gonna snicker, and make fun of someone for their weight, or any other physical defect, at least man up, and have the balls to do it to their face.
Meh, but the guy you made fun of should expect such behavior. You both lose, but I bet his double stack tasted a lot better than your guilt shake.
On a completely unrelated note, my apologies about that random whine fest I posted the other night. Not that it wasn't true on some levels, but I got a good laugh out of my inability to type that night.

Have any interesting conversations with drug induced children or have samurai guarding your room while you were at it?

Have any interesting conversations with drug induced children or have samurai guarding your room while you were at it?Actually the samurai was robbing me, and taunting me with his katana, but that is neither here nor there. On this particular night I was under the influence of 2 Sonata, an Ambien, 3 xanax, and 2 Mickey's. They were all legally prescribed for purposes of the RoC.
A coronary doesn't care if you're 200 lbs overweight, or if you run a marathon every weekend.Sorry, but you probably won't get a heart attack unless you are eating too much cholesterol. You are more likely to have heart problems if you eat like shit than if you eat healthy food and stay in shape. Couple salient points made in this thread, though. I do find it interesting that people will have interventions for drugs, alcohol, gambling, and any other number of addictions, but will make excuses for someone that's obese up one side, and down the other. Cooking yourself a decent meal is hard, when there's always a fast food joint nearby, and time is short.( Eating at home would also save you a load of money, as well.) My dad has a thyroid problem that makes it harder for him to digest carbs, but thats not what makes him fat. What makes him fat is the 2 racks of ribs he can eat and then go and eat everything else you put in front of him and then he works in front of a computer all day. Most Americans are like this. I had two pretty fat friends in high school and neither had any physical problems that would generate obesity and nothing in their genetics would make them fat, but they were fat because they swallowed more food in a meal than a family in Africa eats in a week. And like I already said... there arent any fat people in third world countries. And as for not wanting to cook yourself a meal in a short amount of time... I bet you I could cook something 40 times better than McDonalds in the time it takes you to drive to McDonalds, pick up the food, and return to your house or get to where you were going. If you have a kitchen with food in it, you probably never should go "Hmm, to prepare my own food or to go to McDonalds!" That being said, the OP should worry less about feeling guilty, and more about being grateful he didn't get his ass kicked in. If I were the kids father, or even just sitting within earshot, I'd have drug you, and your lil chickenshit friends, outside and given you a swift curb stomping in the hope that it might teach you the proper manners that your parents obviously didn't. I dont think I could count the times in high school me and my friends only had three or four dollars each and we wanted food, and that meant fast food), it would give the government a nice source of revenue which could be turned around and used on social services, maybe to educate people not to eat the damn chicken McNuggets.
Im just saying.
btw...if you are going to make fat jokes, it's your responsibilty to make sure the target can't hear you. if you slip up then you deserve all the guilt you feel (and notice you mostly feel guilty when you get caught..).
the same goes with race, religion and handicapp jokes.
/btw, fat jokes are funny.
//yes, i'm fat..well, overweight, at least.

On a completely unrelated note, my apologies about that random whine fest I posted the other night. Not that it wasn't true on some levels, but I got a good laugh out of my inability to type that night.
