Ok let me say something, certain ports are instanced, since they are pvp ports, in which you can attack from the ship or go o land and attack, but they can defend themselves too. if you send for help for your guild they could help you attack the port, thus taking it over. Also, the joining in blockades. I find that a very nice idea, since in many instances in the Caribbean. One not all the ships blokcaiding would get there in time. Two, if your late you can always join in. Three, this will make the game more fun and help you make friends. If you just want to join a battle since you know an enemies in it, you could always help against him and make a new friend along the way.
The PvP is far fcrom wrong, I expect it to be one of the most ferocios PvP experiances ever created. Better then WoW, DAoC, and any other.
From my understanding it's not instanced like wow with pre-set team sizes and only a few maps to choose from, it's instanced like EvE where each port would be like a different system. The main reason for this is because to allow for shortened travel times as opposed to real travel times of weeks and months. I still think this is the most compelling pvp game since EvE bar none, and even takes the crafting/gathering grind out of it with stored labor. Anyone who's writing this game off as "lame instanced pvp" needs to take a closer look and actually read how the game is going to work.
Hopefully it will be like Original Release Ultima Online.
Some features that would be Historicaly correct, and time period correct.
1 - Anytime, Anywhere Combat. Figure if I am sailing and I want to give you a broadside why can I not? Do we have to play Everquest style and politely ask if you would like a broadside?
2 - Ability to TAKE the ship. If I board and win. Do I get the ship? Can I tow it back to the city and sell the ship? Can I move all my nice cannons to the new ship and sell my old one?
3 - Can I just plain broadside a trading vessel to death and let it sink and cruise by picking up all the floating debris that I might want to sell?
This is how Ultima Online was originally and what it a GREAT game. I know the noobs came in and CRIED like babies. Now there is REAL UO and then EQ/UO. It is based in the middle ages. If I kill you in the woods, there is no one around. Then you are dead and I take EVERYTHING.
This is the age of sail. There is NO WAY if 200 miles west of Lisbon I put a broadside in a trading vessal(NPC or PC) and board and plunder that anyone will know. There better not be "Do you want to duel?" Or you HAVE to go to English Channel. There is a battle there for the city of London. While a HUGE naval battle sounds really cool. It is going to be a HUGE lag fest. Picture 50 ships on 4-5 different factions(english, french, portugal, dutch, pirate) and random morons just putting broadsides everywhere.
The whole fun of BEING a pirate(if you choose) is to be able to take out random people! Then run to Tortuga and sell off your stolen goods!

Soloers are at a dissadvantage! Michael Jordon, Kobe Bryant, and Shaq are all great basketball players, and yet if they stood on a basketball court alone I'd bet even a high school varsity team could score on, even beat them. Even a grizzly bear, can be taken down by a pack of wolves working together. In both cases it was strength in numbers, over a solo hunter who has to reassure himmself it was failure due to a vicious gank squad As for your high tech communication device.... well walk outside. A plane at 35,000 feet can still be seen, and herd without 'calling' you to annouce it's location. Cannons are quite loud, the sound of which can be herd for miles. Just as smoke can be seen, or lookouts spotting sails of far off ships. Imagine you wish to play a Naval captain of some country, and wish to PVP. Does it not make sence to be able to join a battle in defence of a merchant trader getting assailed by pirates? The pirates in turn get to battle something that puts up a fight, or try an escape with the goods. Either way it's a better challenge to PvP than just ganking a trader, or the slaughter of Noobs to get your kicks.
The game title is Pirates of the Burning Sea. Not too many of the GOOD pirates that we know names of had friends/buddies they sailed with. They did it alone. In a fast sloop that had 2x the guns it was supposed to hold. Raise the Jolly Roger, broadside across the bow and the white flag comes up. Jump on, take what you want, maybe steal some woman and off you go.
Or you can be a privateer with a loaded frigate. Only "groups" of ships would be treasure fleets from Spain, and MAYBE a small group of Merchant ships with precise cargo guarded by a Frigate or Galleon. There weren't just roving bansd of 15 ships looking for 1 pirate and they all stayed together.

Yes if you are a pirate and you defeat someone else you get their ship. Otherwise you just get points and all their cargo. Second there is a whole capture and control system to the map where the different empires fight for control off all the ports (something like 80 ports) except one non captureable port for each empire. The pirate faction will be sort of separate but they are the only ones who can steal ships. There is an extensive crafting system as well but they've taken the grind out of it. You can store up to 3 days of labor in your factorys/mills/mines etc and then instantly use it to produce goods. Then the labor rebuilds even while you are offline. All in all there is a lot to be excited about for everyone from WWIIOL Fans to EvE fans to UO to every type of pvper and organized pvp based guilds.
Hopefully it will be like Original Release Ultima Online.

Sounds interesting. Can you link me to more detailed explanation of this building system? If I am an English Privateer or Pirate or whatever. Where do I build. How do I have "personal mines/mills"?
Also if I go pirate can I come back? For instance in UO if you go red. IE murderer you have a certain amount of time with no kills to become not red
Either way after playing:
UO
EQ
Pirates!
Pirates! Gold
Sid Meier's Pirates
Too Many other games relating to this to mention. I will be buying the game and playing. Whether it is 10 dollars a month to 50 a month. I do hope there is a retail box though. Ussually get cool maps and things with that.
I can wait to give someone a broadside!!!

I am very excited about the PotBS economy too! I think that it will rival the crafting and economy system of SWG, although without player housing and vendors I dont think shopping will be nearly as fun
Sadly you cant change your nation after creating your character. The thing that bothers me about this is that PotBS will have other factions besides the main 4 nations, and with those factions you can change your standing by helping or hindering the faction. I wish they would have just made it that way with nations as well
Ah well though. I suppose you've been branded as a pirate if you so choose, eh?
The Pirate nation sounds great and all, but I think most players will prefer being privateers. I hope the devs make it very clear when you are creating your character via warnings ect the differences between the Pirate faction and the others, the hardships that ensue because of these differences, and how fun and pirate-like privateering for another nation is.
I am very excited by this game. I had my fill of monsters and dragons and orcs+wizards in WoW, EQ2, EVE online is nice..but it is so complex and at this stage i find it hard to get into seeing as so many players skills will ALWAYS be ahead of me.
PvP is instanced, but not in the way of WoW, you click to attack an enemy ship and get zoned into the real time area for realistic combat from the navigation map (which is designed for faster travel). At this point you fight in a real time segment of the area of sea you were in, in the nav map. Any ship (and any number of them afaik) that are near can sail in to help simply by clicking the battle area flagged on their nav maps.
Reason this has to be done is that we cant have constant real time, as people said unlike a similar massive world game (EVE) we dont have stargates and warp .
I have'nt been so excited by a game since..well since before WoW was released.
It sounds like if you are stuck I will be an English or Dutch Privateer...
Being a pirate is going to be VERY difficult if you cannot even fly a countries colors and get into non-friendly ports... Tortuga is going to be the only safe hold... well if it is period correct

Sadly choosing to play Dutch isn't an option currently.
Privateers have to receive Letters of Marque from a country in order to have so called legitimate rights to attack shipping, otherwise you would be a pirate. I don't know if Privateers would fly flags of countries they receive Letters of Margue from. You could potentially have more than one during times when multiple countries were at war with the same enemy.

I dont think Privateers will be able to switch nationalities in PotBS... Which I think is sorta silly, because they have already said that you will be able to switch faction alliances, factions being smaller opposing NPC groups that have mostly to do with PvE quests. I would prefer if we could switch nationalities too, even if it means grinding a really long/simple/boring quest to pull the switch. I hate being stuck with a faction once I found out my friends are all the opposing faction and having to decide if I want to delete my character or just not play with my friends.
And like you said, privateers wouldnt necessarily be loyal to a single nationality...
There is seems to be a lack of risk/reward in the game. PVP seems like an after thought but it may work is hard to say until a person plays it. Even the crafting and trade system seems to be lacking any reward for hard work, everyone can do everything the same way and since the idea of PVP has changed for some people to mean all parts of a game including economy its hard to say how the absolute level playing field will work out. Of course that is only speculation from reading their forums and other information on the web. Of course the anti-PVP crowd seems to control the discussion perhaps it will work better then what is being said.
Becasue PvP sucks to me and I would be happy that no game had it. But that is my opinion
Sure its your opinion I was just curious why.
Personally I have never played against an AI that was very challenging. I like playing against people however there needs to be a way to play without being in PVP and that is fine. Even Eve which is a hardcore PVP game in all aspects has lots of room for people who never want to fight others.
What is the difference in fighting AI vs people? It boils down to gear, specs, and level nothing else. But the only MMO I have played is WoW which I am dropping to find something better.

Because an AI is stupid and not a big deal to defeat. People are not anything like that they adapt and change tactics. WoW PVP is not an example of PvP it was an after thought like EQ and basically sucks.

Just have to wait and see.
How do you come to that conclusion? PvP has been a cornerstone of the PotBS design. The risk reward is losing/gaining a ship, weapons, cargo etc. Title rewards also bring new opportunities. If your faction controls a port you will also gain opportunites.
Trading/crafting has the same reward as any other MMOG. If you are a master at your craft/trade, you can earn a good income and build a reputation, especially if you are one of the first to master a specific craft/trade. As long as it is time consuming and difficult to master a craft, then not everyone will persue them and the reward will exist.
Becasue PvP sucks to me and I would be happy that no game had it. But that is my opinion.
