Originally posted by UOAndrommie I just got this game a few days ago...so it's still fun to me, I'm sure in a couple months it will become boring. However the one thing that I really enjoy about this game is that the main focus is your own character. There is no hunting and trying to get that uber item. No special clothes or houses either. So all ya hafta do is make your toon and work on the skills and you can have fun doin that. Also so far on any server I've tried the community is very friendly and mature. But as stated that could change upon pvp.
*A game does not rule all other games...espcially if it hasn't been released yet.*
Doubt pvp will change things.Fact remains most people in CoH are adults .Most times I say oh I got to go to work you would see like half the group say "ack me too in 15 mins".Quite often you would have people leave saying "ok got to go cook the dinner" or "kids need to be put to bed".Never have I heard "my bro needs to use the computer" or " its bedtime school tomorrow".
So yeah its mostly of us old boring farts but i like it that way.kind of reminds me of EQ back in 1999.I just finished university back then and felt very young with most of the folks i played with.
I think what happened was L2 and CoH came out the same time.L2 seems to appeal to the younger crowd much more then CoH(seen loads of review of under 18s say CoH is very boring ).So most of them went to L2.

Yep, you got to love how EQ and CoH people put their games above their children. Sort of reminds of me the people who morgage their house to buy Everquest castles. To each their own I say, but : "seen loads of review of under 18s say CoH is very boring" the game seems targeted at 13-15 year olds. I mean look at it;it's not exactly very mature. Gaming is universal and if a 90 year old loves to spend his days capping everyone in CS then who the hell is anyone to say otherwise.
Originally posted by Misti There are things I would fault about the game but definitely not the community. So far I have met many great individuals and only 1 or 2 that were difficult to get along with. I agree with Malk that the lack of pvp usually draws a more mature crowd.
I only found the opposite to be true. Why be polite to someone if they can't retaliate against you in any way.
This is exactly what I mean. If you are only nice to people because you fear retaliation then your not what I would consider a mature or a friendly individual.
Many pvp diehards are also of the opinion that the way they want to play is the only fun and worthwhile way and everyone else is wrong. This limited view and acceptance of others values also falls into the immature pot imo.
There are many mature and wonderful people that love pvp but there is a very large nasty element that are attracted by it as well. This is not to say non pvp games are only populated by perfectly polite people, but in every pvp game I have played the rude, obnoxious, and selfish have been a much larger portion of the population then in the pve games.

I don't play COH yet but you are right regarding to Lineage 2. L2 has potential but it has 2 big problems: 1: The level grind is horrible in this one. Something i can live with. 2: The community is immature

No castles to buy in EQ(at least not when i was there).
As for people putting the game before their children dunno whatever gave you that idea.Fact that you are an adult and a parent does not mean your life ends there and you only work and serve the children.
As an adult you have to have an avenue to relax otherwise you head for a breakdown.
CoH imploys the old style comic book(eg marvel) type of superheroes .The golden era of comic books was the 70s and 80s.There was little else to do but read comic books So this attracts the older generation to the game.
Online games are not meant to be mature in content.A mage running around in UO, a iksar shadowknight running with a skeleton,a wookie bounty hunter are all fantasy and have little to do with reality or maturity and thats why people play them to escape for a brief moment into a fantasy and not think of the next day long haul work shift.
Its the attitude of the community that needs to be mature and a 10 yr old can behave matured simply by not been a brat and he can pass for a 40 yr old in a suit online.
Yeah there is probably a 70yr old playing L2 and probably a 8 yr old play CoH.Just stating that the big majority i met in CoH tend to be above 18.Not saying there is no 10 yr old in it all.So yeah gaming is universal .But like I said i met a large majority of older crowd in CoH then aany other mmorpg since EQ early days.

My statement is more of a philosophical one than anything. There are 3 types of people, those that are good people and won't hurt/take advantage of you. (10%)
Those that will take advantage of you if given the opportunity, or could do so without repercussions. They may seem nice, because they themselves think they are nice, but leave a 20 out in the open and see what happens. They are only nice because they fear the results of being perceived otherwise. Or there are to impulsive to control themselves.
Either way, they are not friends, these people are about 80% of those you'll meet. In RL and inside the game, just inside you think they are nice, because the game is so simple that there is little advantage to taking advantage of you but once there is watch-out! I've seen the "nicest" people go bitter once that AC hits the ground.
And those are those bent on hurting others (10%)
I can honestly say I've never been trained, KSed, or had lewt stolen (pre-looted) in a PvP game. Yet, it was rather common in other "non-PvP" games.
You want to perceive people as nice so they are. It's not PvP they not "trying" to hurt you, they must be nice. But really you know nothing about them. The bad element you speak of comes from playing with people. Not from PvP.
PvP will come to CoH. It's only a matter of time. In fact all nearly all games will have some flavor of PvP. So "if it should exist" has lost, it's only matter of "how it should exist".
And this is nither here or there. I think I outlined rather well, why the average person is better in CoH than other MMORPG's, it has 0% to do with PvP.

Yes pvp will come to CoH and most people i talked with including me want it.It will be fun in CoH if done right with a supervillian kind of theme. Also most are happy to go into it because there is nothing to loot or lose really but your pride.
Most people will gladly pvp.It is just how its done.
In UO it was pvp anytime you step out of time with looting.Problem is most folks don't even mind been dragged into a pvp scenario but hate losing what they worked so hard for in a flash.
Look at DAoC there is no looting and heck there is even no communication between oppossing realms and people all have fun in it.
CoH has no loot therefore would have nothing to loot making it an exciting experience .If there was loot rest assured the leet guys would run out and buy this game and start Pking every single vunerable person that had the misfortune of answering the doorbell while in view of the pker.
Originally posted by hercules Look at DAoC there is no looting and heck there is even no communication between oppossing realms and people all have fun in it.
I think the lack of direct communication was what made DAoC PvP so good. There was no looting, no exp loss, and most importantly, no trash talking in dude speak. It kept you within the RPG realm, and if you wanted trash talking, you could always head to the MB (plenty of light hearted trash talking there). One thing I think DAoC nailed was the RvR concept, and this is coming from someone who generally despises PvP.
I might actually pick up CoH in the next couple of days. I was more worried about computer requirements than anything else and someone already mentioned that it seems to work fine even on some low end systems.
With the age thing, if you look at the average age of L2 players, they will most likely be higher than you imagine too. Overall, PC games attract older players. Younger players tend toward consoles, but the average age for consoles is getting higher too. Hopefully kids are realizing there's an outside world and they are off playing basketball or something that gives them exercise but that would be too hopeful. I already had an argument on the forums here about the age of first-person-shooters and had to give a link to winners of a CS tournament to show that these were the faces of people playing the game and not one of them were under 18. So, stop being suprised when you start seeing 30+ year olds playing the game. There's a whole lot of them out there for many games.

Don't worry about computer specs.Box says fx5600 as recommended and geforce2ti as minimum. In reality this game runs smooth on a 4ti easy .In short last night was amazed to find 2 folks in my group was actually using geforce2ti lol.And they said it worked fine enough(but I am sure they must lag a bit in a crowded town center).

I bought it last night and played some last night and some this morning. I have a Radeon 8500, Pentium4 1.7 Ghz, and 512 MB of RAM, everything that was the minimum on the box and it runs fine with all the video options on high. It's weird that I get some games and my comp is way higher than their min specs and I when I play realize my comp can't really handle it because the devs underestimated their specs and here's a game that overestimated it's specs. I prefer the way CoH did it even if it might cost them some when people just go by the box specs.
BTW, where do the MMORPG.com members hang out in CoH.
If u look at the quality of the graphics its pretty good .So really you have to ask the question why do some games like SWG require a radeon 9800pro or a fx 5950ultra to run at full setting and yet is still bugged to hell.
I think bad programming has a lot to do with it.CoH was well written is all.
yes, it runs great with most newer cards (last 2 years) its only with much older cards that there starts to be problems or with on board video devices (which suck anyway).
When all else fails, Poke 'em in the eye with a good sharp stick.

Seen many people play with a Geforce2 and thats closing to 4 years now.2 year old cards are the geforce4 which is even an overkill for this game.
well finally got my CoH imported to the UK today and just got off from my first hour in-game and must say I like it. Not sure if i was just on the "strong silent" server or something but nobody seemed to want to chat (perhaps it's my putrid bio clothing). The engine seems really nice, no slowdown at max detail at 1280x1024, no popup. Fair enough the graphics aren't jaw-dropping but certainly they're good enough to keep me happy.

of course, this means it has less compatibility with video cards, but it runs better on the cards it IS compatible with.
