If you want to spend the whole fight clicking a button to swing your weapon, actively blocking and manually dodging incoming blows, then pick a different genre. RPGs are not about console style action/adventure gaming. The skill in RPGs comes from decision making, planning, maneuvering and other strategy-based elements. There are some twitchy requirements in executing an action once you've decided what to do, but mostly it requires mental speed and flexibility. What you call "skill" is just motor skills. I would get bored VERY fast with a combat system that consisted of manually making each of my characters moves. I don't want to play my MMO with a gamepad.
You show total ignorance of the concept of games by even putting forth the idea that reflexes equal skill, while thinking and mental dexterity is somehow less important. And drop the sefl-righteous "meaningful discussion" crap. This is nothing more than an AoC troll trying to argue that their combat style is like the coolest thing ever and all of us dice rolling losers are just like stupid or something if we don't agree.
MMOs Played: EQ 1&2, DAoC, SWG, Planetside, WoW, GW, CoX, DDO, EVE, Vanguard, TR Playing: WAR Awaiting 40k Online and wishing for Battletech Online
Skill can be found in any game. The card game "Uno" requires skill...but you say Warhammer Online doesn't?
I have to note that Uno requires no skill whatsoever. It's all random based on who goes first and what cards you get. The cards don't just jump down on the table in a predefined order. You're the one controlling the cards, you're the one who decides when to drop which card.
Card games does req. skill, even though the cards are random. Look at poker.

So go play Halo on XBox live you twit and leave the strategy games to those of us who love them.

Go look up firewarrior. 100% pure FPS.
HAHA, Firewarrior, IM a huge 40k and Warhammer fan, but Firewarrior just sux! lol
i want to deserve my victorys by a fair fight...THATS what RPG is
Not the " he he im higher level and have better gear...so i win " whats the RPG in that??
You have no idea what "RPG" is an acronym for, do you?
Yes, im one of the people that have played table RPG for 15 years before moving on to MMO.
And if I RP, in a MMORPG...i do that beetwen fights. Real time combat is more fast, intense and gives a much better feeling for what the chartacter is doing.....RP.
Point and click takes away all feeling for the game. You are just standing there and mostly waiting. Thats not a RPG. Thats just a G.
for such a big IP why are they going with the static roll of the dice figthing???????? thats ancient and sucks.. theres absolutely no skills in it whatsoever !!! when will we see the day where hitting them actually means hitting them! when will mmo's start having god of war and other action games style that actually takes some dam skills... im really dissapointed. at least age of conan is trying it.... yould think that every new mmo would try actual "real" combat but nope same old shit. i understand that it could be a bandwidth problem but dam it work it out. i dont even understand how people can get a kick out of sitting there holding down a dam button while u eat a sandwich. wheres the skill? im a lvl 30 your 20 so... whats the point? we know whos going to win. this shit is stupid.
You mean combat where it relies on how good ones game setup and internet connection is? Combat where teh best system can automatically beat half the people playing? If thats what you want feel free to GO find that game .
Ok, ok, I see the light. Mythic should scrap everything and start over letting these tools dictate game mechanics. They clearly know what real gaming is all about. Let's change all MMOs to action/adventure, that'll like totally be the coolest.
Or.... just go play AoC, cause it ain't happening here. Just start a thread on how the world should change to fit your view.
MMOs Played: EQ 1&2, DAoC, SWG, Planetside, WoW, GW, CoX, DDO, EVE, Vanguard, TR Playing: WAR Awaiting 40k Online and wishing for Battletech Online
The thing is this: there are about 1000 diffrent combat system to use...and they only use one of them
And people get afraid to have freedom.....like prisoners that have been in jail for 30 years.....they begin to like it in there.
So...when you see a NEW MMO with same anciant combat system, that i can almost take... but when people speak of player freedom in MMO...and some people begins to down talk it then something is seriously wrong.
Same with Vanguard, LOTRO, WAR.
So how can a serious MMO developer make a WoW clone from something that could have been so amazing?
And FFS try Mount&Blade, that little game show the future for MMO combat. seriously try it out and you will look back at the point&click with a new mind
Because if you only have tryed point-click system..you have missed alot.

So, to boil it all down.. It's not roleplaying, unless it's twitch based and fast paced action. Yeah. That brings lots of memories back from the PnP sessions i've had. Or not. PnPing, at least the different games i've played(Mostly Warhammer 1st and 2nd edition and vampire), was all about waiting and taking it slow, with the luck of the dice telling you where you hit.
But i dont want no stnking light circle around my "target"
Every time a watch the WAR trailer i get excited there is some nice feeling in that movie. And as soon i watch the acctual gameplay i get awww......just as i did in Lineage2
But the thing is..they could have done it with that feeling. Even AoC have that feeling in their gameplay movies *&%¤#¤* WoW clone

Not really. There are only a few different types of combat systems. Active combat (Which tries to mimic real life), Turn based (Think old school final fantasy), and suedo real time (Newer final fantasies were you can sit there and let the enemy beat on you without you doing anything in return. Basically governed by speed of X to Y.)

I have heard this skill term used so much it is really getting annoying. People dont login into a mmo and automatically have skill. The kind of skills and MMO inspires is a mix of fps twitch with battle sense. Battle sense is the most determining factor in MMO skill. The more skilled players become aware of the battle around them, how they can help their groups, they learn the counters to enemies and then they become a skilled player at that class.
The free form combat sounds good in a fps but it could cause a lot of problems in widescale mmo combat, the focus shifts from the battle around you to every sword swing and parry and generally people with the fastest reflexes flourish. There is nothing wrong with that and it could be fun if the mix is right. I just personally dont think many games really require a specfic skill set, anyone with motivation and time can gain skill.
Daarco, it ain't happening. We get the idea... you're bumbed it's not action based. Stop implying that anyone that likes this system or disagrees with you is some narrowminded tool. You're NOT "right". Deal with it.
MMOs Played: EQ 1&2, DAoC, SWG, Planetside, WoW, GW, CoX, DDO, EVE, Vanguard, TR Playing: WAR Awaiting 40k Online and wishing for Battletech Online
Many people in rhis thread keep implying that it will require lots of ``player`` skill in pvp, in the form of mental dexterity, class knowledge, awareness of you surroundings etc...I really hope this is the case with WAR. Unfortunatly I found this was not the case with all other mmorpgs thus far. What wins pvp in current pvp games is ( order may change according to game)
1 - Numbers or zerging
2 - levels or time played
3 - gear
4 - Class, ``being the flavour of the month``
5 - potions, inspirations, or anyform of usable items
6 - character build, a character built for pvp vs a character built for pve
7 - buffs
8 - when all else is equal who ever got the first shot in
9 - player skill
I really really hope WAR will finally make a game where player skill will mean more and actually be in the top 3 of what wins .

Anyone else find the objection to "static roll of the dice fighting" in a game based on a tabletop wargame to be amusing?
If it were based on an all-action IP, fair enough, but dice rolls are used to determine everything in WFB. Hardly a shock, is it?
Indeed, but a Mount&Blade-like mmog would be quite refreshing and different, certainly one for my taste (I hope at least some people here know about M&B ).
Most game developers seek to please as many as possible, the more paying players a game get the more money they earn.
I do agree that some skill must be involved in games with pvp, but finding a balance that everyone can enjoy is pretty hard.
If WAR can take the best things from daoc pvp and implement a few new ideas Im sure It'll be great. I don't give a rats ass that the grapics has a few similarities to other already released games, It's how fun I have playing it that counts.
Not every game is for everyone. Some games focus on pve, some on pvp. Daoc is all about RvR, wich is great and games like EQ1 are all about pve, wich is also great.

Its still beter then when levels and gear determen the fight in a stactic system.
You start a new game and some *%&¤# comes and ganks you
And i have friends playing BF with bad internet connection..and they manages very well.
LOL
But the worst thing is its true the BF part. And i dont like real time...but its still the best combat system
