Title pretty much says it. Either the game just plain sucks, OR it is close to decent (but honestly I havent' seen one yet) and you have to buy items from the cash store, which means it isn't really free.
I can't for the life of me understand why anyone plays the free MMORPGs, since they are so craptacular. Have you ever bought a new computer game? They usually cost around 50 bucks. That's enough money to pay for a few months subscription to a decent MMORPG, rather than playing some free piece of doo doo.
Go sell some lemonade, or save your allowance, and buy a decent game and pay the sub if you want to play online, IMO. The "free" stuff is nothing more than a waste of bandwidth.

Rather harsh don't you think? yea ill admit a free game normally doesn't come up to par with a large Scale Released project but.. people have their own Preferances. i cant say i agree with them.. (im sorry Runescape lovers) Runescape for example. it is the worst thing i have ever seen in my exsistance on this earth. but.. there are many many users who still cherish the thing as if it is a god send. why? its beyond me but it is their choice to (im sorry again) waste there time on something that has little chance of showing improvment. That overall would have to be my biggest take on the free MMO Envionment if you dont mind that its probably going to be buggy. or not get updated often or with quality. then sure you may find it fun. But for use Seasoned MMO players if the world dosent change or dosent get better. it gets dull. so i understand why you may not like free mmos... but to each their own! they all have a right to like what they want. (i hope some one else agrees)
(again im sorry runescape players. for more ways than you can possibly imagine)

Also, you can play an item shop game for free without paying for anything.
Still alot of people play it and enjoy it and some cant even afford to play games with monthly fees.
And Guild Wars is a free game altough you'll have to buy the CD and it's GREAT.
Oh and was it isnt up to you tell if the games sucks or no.. its up to the player base that support it...
honestly why is it anyones problem if i like apples that fell of the tree .. while you like bananas that you bought from the store
just becuse you bought it dosent nesseacarly make it better.. (though there is a great chance that it will be)
just becuse a game is free dosent make it impossible to be somewhat enjoyable
(Watch me Stradlle the fence)!

Yes, they may "suck" in your eyes, but they might be appeal to another group of gamers. And for many new game company, you got to start somewhere, and using the idea of Free Game but with purchase, or Free Game with Item shop, can help them start up and get into the business.
Current MMO: FFXIV:ARR
Past MMO: Way too many (P2P and F2P)
This post is either a rant or a flame. Either way Im not gonna give a response but will point something out that is flawed. A good game costs 50 bucks or so yes. Then you don't have to pay for it again(exceptions for this rule are games like oblivion) and get entirley new games. Half-Life 2, BF2, UT, etc. there are complete total conversion mods for these games. Those in a sense are free games in there own, and many people play them /shocked. Look at the college project done in half life 2, it is now a charged game that pe ople pay for. The offical Half-Life 2 members picked the mod up and are now selling it to the xbox360 version. Not bad for a free game ya?
Also one more point I need to make. Most mmo's are not free to get the client...You pointed out you have to pay a sub every month, so 3 months is about how much a normal game costs. Except that most mmorpg's cost 50 bucks alone just to get the client. Then you pay for sub's. MMORPG's cost much more then your average game. Be more careful when expressing your point my friend. To give people a false impression in a arguement is like stabing yourself in the heart.
lolol, great example. I must say I agree with anastaia. If people enjoy playing free games, what's the problem?
Personnaly, I prefer games made by small companies or even games made by one or two programmers in their spare time. Don't ask me why, I just find it quite appealing.

This is their chance to playe many mmos and may be their first exposure to the mmo environment. When money, age and experience come to them, they DO find the paid games to be superior and don't look back. I have a newphew who played Runescape religiously until he found Guild Wars and WoW. It kinda had that 'How did I ever believe santa was real' emotion to it.
Give a man fire and he''s warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he''s warm the rest of his life.
It doesnt take a lot of reasoning to come to the conclusion that something free will not be of the same quality as something you pay for, at least typically, there are exceptions to most things. Free games are generally good for those that do not have a lot of time to devote to their online gaming. Even if you have a lot of cash to spend on entertainment, if you can only play an hour or two a week its hard to justify spending the same amount as someone that plays more than that a day.
Also, for a lot of people that play that casually, the features that you get from P2P games may not matter that much. The more detailed and expanded games are great for those that devote a lot of time to them, but if you just have an hour here and there to kill some stuff, I would say some of these games really dont "suck" overall as they are enough for the people playing them.

hahahahaha... hahahaha.... hahah...
*phew* thanks for that.
Free software has always been a resource for hacks to get their trojans out there. It's the Internet's dirty little secret. To say that none of them are phishing tools is to say there are no criminals in your home town. They may not all be criminals... but...

Thing is, we are not dealing with "Play our game completely free!". Those games either have a cash shop or depend on a premium option. they need the money just as bad as a company like Blizzard and SOE do, as well as the reputation. No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
Hemingway
Ok... sure... hehehe
Besides... I stated I would love to see the statistics on this sort of thing, and stated that I wonder how many F2P games were phishing and/or virus scams. I did not state that I thought it was a widespread issue. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if it were.

When people shell-out a measly $15 bucks a month - which is less than half of what it costs for a little kids school lunch each month - then they shouldn't expect to get a kick-ass state-of-the-art MMOG.
I play the free MMOGs as a way of punishing greedy western MMOG publishers!
As soon as a Sci-Fi/ cyberpunk MMOG is made that is/has...
But until then I'll be playing the free ones.
Don't be a silly boy.
Take, for example, a game population of 10,000 active subscriptions. Now multiply that by $14.99. You get $149,000.00 per month in revenue. That's $1,798,800.00 annually on monthly subscriptions alone. Retail sales cover the packaging design and distribution, and don't forget about expansion sales. That's a hell of a balogna sandwich.

You are for the greatest part right about f2p mmorpgs, but you should think about the fact that some people might not be so demanding or might just not have the same experience like you maybe had in some spectacular mmorpg many years ago. So basicly we settle with less and just enjoy a free mmorpg with a nice clan and some good people.
I have a powerfull computer and yet i play a free mmorpg, im not gona bother mention the game to avoid unnecessary flaming but i have my fun for 2 or 3 hours a day and thats good enough for me. Without a doubt I will keep an eye open for a p2p mmorpg that suits me but till then my free mmorpg is good enough
And last but not least, why in gods name would you care about what people like to play and what not?
Why do you care that I care?
It's a discussion on a forum. That's all.
I do, however, wish that the whole "gimmie gimmie" attitude would fall away. So many people looking for something for nothing. Every thread I see for a free game is one more subscription that could have gone to a decent game's development. Others see it differently. Life moves on.
