Man.....
I appreciate that its easier to communicate with people using voice chat. I apprecaite the benefits it presents to player run organizations and for the social aspect. With all that in mind I personally hate it. The rise of VOIP communications as a gaming component has the potential to ruin MMORPG games for me.
My PC is in a common area of the house. I'm a father of a 10 year old and a 7 week old and my wife and I share a room with a TV and said computer. There are lots of times where its practical for me to do a quest or run an Eve mission but in those same times it may not necessairly be as practical to have a headset on.
I know im a dieing breed of gamer and that everyone likes chatting but is there anyone else that shares my sentiment? On top of all of these issues sometimes the last thing I want to do at teh end of the day is talk more.
Am I alone? It seems to me that the future of player run orgs in MMO gaming is directly tied with VOIP chat. Although I fully appreciate the benefits this presents in accomplishing tasks as a group I ask myself is there any other way?

I agree on two points. One, I really dont want to hear the RL voice of that Female NE, unsettleingly deep, or the Undead Rogue, pitch high enough to rattle my speakers, in my guild.
Two, my computers also sort of in the middle of house traffic. Its embarassing to have a headset on when you have girls and friends running around your house. Its even more annoying when someones yelling/spaming over the server. Everyone in the house comes in and sees what the noise was and I have to reduce my sound quality to that of my logitech economy headphones.
I think voip is ok in special situations (raid/clan match) but needing it on at all times is rediculous.
My $0.02
IRT Fion> dont overgeneralize everyone -21. The 'Nub Pwnrs' are rarer then many pretend. I was in a 13-17 year old clan 3 years ago and not one person was like that. Ive also been in adult clans with an avererage mental age of 8. Physical age means next to nothing in the world of maturity these days.
Playing: EVE, WAR, Cybernations lol
I think i'd enjoy eve more if I could be in a good 0.0 corp that wont ban me if i'm not logged on Vent the second I sign on. I respect the fact that others don't share my point of view and that much can be accomplished with voice but i still hate it.
Now if you dont have vent or a mic in some of these guilds/corps its like saying you dont own a keyboard ffs
I've never met you before, but I can tell you right now that you don't need to be playing MMOs if you don't like voice chat
Bye
I am one with the both of you and I am sure many feel the same.
I enjoy gaming as a getaway into a virtual world. I enjoy the aspect of roleplay , not that I am a huge roleplayer but for the fact that the character in game is a representation of myself. No i don't like to hear myself in game or other folks in the real world we live in. I enjoy who I am in real life and commonly play a paladin type character because that is much like myself, caring and giving of others needs before my own. I play evil characters when i need to take a break from "me" and those are the characters I make for pvp. No where in there have I ever felt the need to share myself personally or my familiy in a virtual world. Even when playing with friends, we never use voicechat of any kind.
I certainly realize the benefit of voice chat in alot of situations, I just don't tend to play in those situations unless I have some alone time and the kids are out playing or something. Even in those times I seldom speak, only listen to a raid leader or whoever is leading the pvp group. I won't knock it , but was just saying I also don't like it , but games have really turned that direction. For many I am sure it is better.
Out of raids I never have vent on. I find it totally ridiculous in 5mans most of the time.

What games do you play that fit with your ideas because I share your sentiments?

I respect your view (no pun intended :P ) and although I've never run a raid I can appreciate how messed up it would be.
I'm thinking the answer is Raids arent for me and I need to find a game where the end game is not raids.
ps great analogy with the dropping your sword to write a note thing.
For me, the benefits outweigh the negatives. A new age of MMOs has come, and if you want to get along and press on you sadly have to adapt to it.

In voice chat or the type of game and characters?Apologies for I am not sure what direction you were asking.Really? And what about those of us who are deaf?

Ahh got you now. Well currently I am playing LOTRO a little but mostly Vanguard after just leaving EQ2. Where as many enforce vent you will always find smaller groups and still quite a few guilds that dont require you to voice chat. I was with Crimsonwind throuhg a few games and we never used any type of voice chat . We raided alot and pvp'd alot on Daoc and WoW, then again we spent years with each other so we knew our roles enough for pvp and raids. I have yet to be asked since playing lotro since beta 2 and vanguard since launch in any grouping situation if i even had vent or any type of chat(lotro has a voice chat of its own). If it comes to a situation i will just kindly decline and if the folks don't like the fact that I won't use it then I will understand and hopefully so will they. I am comfortable with any current game not using voice chat and as I can see here alot of folks probably feel the same way. WoW made raiding situations to smaller groups and lotro it isnt really necessary in anything except raid scale pvp atm so I am sure you can find plenty of folks who won't find it necessary.
Hope that's what you were looking for.
Technology always outpaces society, and it frequently leaves people behind.
Adapt and adjust or be left behind.
Truthfully, though...you do NOT have to have VOIP to play. What you are clearly upset about is that some corporations/guilds are requiring it and you don't want to. That's your choice. You put your own life interests ahead of those of the gaming community to which you belong. There's nothing wrong with that, but face the consequence of your own choice. Don't blame the technology.

Oh I know typing words and watching them apear above player's heads is quite immersive. Why on earth would they want to kill that?
No offense meant Samuraisword, sorry if it seemed that way, I just think the complete opposite of what you said.
Then again I use Vent with my mates more than I use msn now, we are all addicted to it, it's so much easier.
Currently Playing: Everything but MMORPGs
