WTF are you on, Voice chat adds so much to games, OK so the people I am chatting to don't sound like elves, but at the end of the day it is a game and I am not trying to convince myself it is real. If you are then go and do some LARP (live action roeplay) or something lol. to be in a top can/outfit/guide/corp or whatever you need to have a teamspeak server or a ventrillo server because typing is just 2 damn slow. Besides I have had hours and hours of fun and have made many good friends on TS. Voice chat for the win!! and the best thhing is it is the fututre, it is gonnna happen wether you like it or not :P. and I like it.
"at the end of the day it is a game" yes... and not everyone plays games to be the "best" and brag about it to their friends. Seems like there are two kinds of players. the ones that play games for fun and killing some time and the ones who see it like some kind of sport where the only thing that matters is to win win win. How can it be that difficlt to understand people play games for different reasons.
You could also say that if you wanna chat and make friands join a chat room, this is a game...
I appreciate that its easier to communicate with people using voice chat. I apprecaite the benefits it presents to player run organizations and for the social aspect. With all that in mind I personally hate it. The rise of VOIP communications as a gaming component has the potential to ruin MMORPG games for me. My PC is in a common area of the house. I'm a father of a 10 year old and a 7 week old and my wife and I share a room with a TV and said computer. There are lots of times where its practical for me to do a quest or run an Eve mission but in those same times it may not necessairly be as practical to have a headset on.
I know im a dieing breed of gamer and that everyone likes chatting but is there anyone else that shares my sentiment? On top of all of these issues sometimes the last thing I want to do at teh end of the day is talk more.
Am I alone? It seems to me that the future of player run orgs in MMO gaming is directly tied with VOIP chat. Although I fully appreciate the benefits this presents in accomplishing tasks as a group I ask myself is there any other way?
I have set strict parameters as to what is and is not acceptable behavior on my guild Ventrilo. I am very sensitive to the fact that from certain times, there will be minors on or in ear shot of the Ventrilo chat. I warn once, then if said perpatraitor violates again, they have a 1 day ban...PERIOD!
Chat for some is a very useful tool.. I have a couple of guild members that have dyslexia and not having to worry about typing during quest parties or dungeon raids has really helped their self-esteem quite a bit. So, at least for my guild and me, personally, Ventrilo is NOT a boon, but a helpful way to enjoy the MMO gaming experience.
I am a truly social person in real life. I actually enjoy being around people most all the time and I try my best to recruit guild members that have similar social playing styles as myself. Ventrilo adds to that dimension. However, that said I do appreciate and respect the old timers out their that love to hunt-and-peck type and try to kill a mob at the same time. Wheew, it wasn't ever easy for me..LOL..of course I have a tendency to get excited and chat up a storm, so typing was sometimes erratically written.
All I want is the truth Just gimme some truth John Lennon
I too am an olde skool gamer (old English allowed for people to spell in whatever way sounded correct BTW), but I have to disagree with you about VOIP. I will admit that most of that comes from the type of gamer that I am though.
When you're playing online FPS and Combat Flight sims like Warbirds 3, VOIP is not only required but also helps you to suspend disbelief. This is part of the reason that Roger Wilco had an option for a cheesy radio click noise with every message. If you're flying WWII fighter plane, you would expect to hear that radio click noise. Likewise, I think that VOIP makes perfect sense in Eve Online. I would go even further and say that video conferencing would make even more sense in Eve online, except that it would devour bandwidth and you would need to be in front of a green screen in order for it to work. Seeing a modern living with sunlight streaming in would totally ruin that idea
In other MMORPGs I mostly solo or stick to groups of less than eight people so I don't need VOIP. During PvP (I play Guild Wars so I don't raid), VOIP is mandatory. If your opponent has it and you don't, you're going to lose. It's really that simple.
I was beginning to feel I was alone in that sentiment.
I use Vent/TS on many occasions...even had a vent server at one point to help out the guild. And what I found was that half the time it was the same people on...talking about something totally inane and not at all related to the game. When you do use it for raids or group PvP...it's very quiet other than raid leaders yelling out tactics. Although I've had some nice moments with my friends on Vent/TS, I dont like being required to have it or be on it. I'm on the phone alot on my RL job, the last thing I want to do is grab my headphones and talk to someone over Vent when I get home. And what's wrong with typing! I love to text chat.
I prefer to listen to the ambient ingame music or the music coming from my computer when I play. It actually helps me concentrate and I get more stuff done.
Step 1 - Only go into voice chats if ppl talk the same language as you or you can speak as well as they do.
Step 2 - If you cant follow step just get in and be quiet.
Step 3 - try to talk with oter ppl during breaks.. It will help making friends inside the guild and it will get you used to voice chat.
Step 4 - DO NOT bet ashamed of your voice!! Its not ur fault that the voice chat is bad. (if ur voice actually sucks you can blame the voice chat too :P)
Step 5 - If you dont like try to talk to your guild leader or whatever and explain him why. Maybe he'll only force you to go in in hard raids/PvP/whatever
Step 6 - If not any of the steps above is good for you... DONT GO INTO VOICE CHAT!!
I think VOIP will become an enhancement to typing, not a replacement like some thought at first. Voice chat is a completely different way to communicate than typing, and not all gamers want to engage in voice chat for a myriad of reasons. Therefore, I dont' think typing is going to simply be replaced. Instead there will be the option to use voice, and it will be used in some situations not others.
For example, people might group and type for general chat, but someone might use voip to give an order or warning that's urgent. Or, groups of friends might use VOIP, but not use it when playing in a pickup group.
It doesn't have to become a black and white, either use VOIP or TYPE, you can't do both. Of course you can do both, and mix and match them to make a good gaming experience for lots of players in lots of different situations.
I like to join pick up groups and then fart into the microphone. It's very immersive.
As someone who has dyslexia I would encourage someone else with dyslexia NOT to use a voice chat. Typing with other people online has helped my writing skills and reading comprehension more than any class ever has. There is no better way to learn then by actually doing it, and I think using a voice chat will hurt someone with dyslexia more than it helps.
Man..... I'm with you all the way. In battlefield 2 it is a definite asset and necessity in squad based play, but in MMORPG's I just hate it. When I'm playing an MMORPG, I just want to relax. Also, at the end of the day the last thing I want to do is talk more as I talk plenty at work.
I won't ever do voice chat in an MMORPG ever again. If that limits my raiding, GOOD. I probably won't ever raid in an MMORPG ever again either. I don't want to hear the voices of the people I meet in game, especially when someone turns out to be a drunken ass.

LOL, I like the last part. I totally agree with everything you have said here though.
Voice chat is good for coordination, but just not right for immersion... I wonder would older male gamers playing a female character use voice chat without destroying immersion...? Hmm, voice chat also disrupts good music with all the excess chatter.
Worry not OP, thou art not alone.
... bah, wait till the telepathic word chats using electronic headgear becomes widely use!
I've absolutely no problem with voice comm in an MMO, so long as it always remains optionary. I've used Vent/TS plenty of times for raiding or just plain out gabbing with guild type moments in the past and I've always found it fine.
Where it would be bad is if you logged into a game and there wasn't even a chat client, just a voice chanell, you wouldn't catch me playing that game ever.
I will not use VOIP except for a Raid, and even then I don't speak, I only listen and I mute everyone but the raid leader. I would not use it if it wern't for raiding, period.
I hate it and won't use it. I explained why in the last thread about this so I'll skip that.
I can understand why some people are so fond of it though. I remember watching one of my real life friends playing EQ years ago. He is one of those 'hunt and peck' typers. It was painful watching him try to type out even the briefest of comments.
Also, I realize that some people are probably embarassed by their poor spelling. Some people are slow readers, etc. So yeah, I can understand why those people think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. But I absolutely refuse to use it.
I guess I'm old school as well, however I've learned over time to adapt to the new technology and use it to supplement typed chat, but not completely replace it. Sure, for raids or large guild runs, I put on vent and work as a team.
But often I leave the headset laying on the desk and just play in blissful silence....
But many of today's players can't or won't even read text chat, much less type some so its hard to communicate with them at times.

I understand that a lot of people want to play the roleplaying aspect of a game or have a high immersion. In this case a voice chat may really be a killer. It helps to be in an over-18 guild. There is no shouting and most people are polite so it works quite well.
Understand though that typing decreases your playing efficiency. In pvp you drop your sword to type. You cannot control your character while typing. Having a voice tool gives you an edge over any opponents who are not using voice tools. The information richness of a VoIP channel is so much higher than writing that it will always be prefered for competitive stuff. Yes, it has become a necessity (for pvp anyway) and I really pity you folks who are after roleplaying.

The thing is, PVP in mmo's in my opinion is only good BECAUSE of the inherent RP and immersion in MMo's. The combat sucks ass, if you want good team based combat play Battlefield 1942 or something if the combat is all youre looking for.
The competitive level of PVP in MMO's has been raised beyond that originally intended imo by voice-chat.
Roleplaying has nothing to do with it I think, just generally I only use voice over for when I'm talking to my friends over the net generally or in FPS' it should only be used for games with quick combat and where you just simply don't have the time to type a message like "Needs some help at the bombsite a" like in Counterstrike. I think making voice chat a necessity is personally a fun killer, sure you can chat with your friends, but that's what teamspeak and skype is for but it means you have to take the game seriously and be overly organized and have people nagging at you when something goes wrong even if it mightn't be your fault, I wouldn't like that, that kind of thing is easier to ignore and work past in chat, not when you have several people screaming in your ears.
I think there are quite a few people who share the same views, I personally think that people are just getting too lazy to download and use the software that's available to them and so they try and get developers to do it for them so they don't have to set it up themselves, but meh, that's just my opinion.
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
I'm not very fond of it, when you goof around doing quests and 5man's, saying something like: oh man, that sure did freeze my gonads after beeing struck by icebolt sounds realy lame over VoIP, but it can be funny when written...
But, if I have to use it, I just wish that people using it would make an effort and get somewhat better microphones because saying what, or please can you repeat that 2 or 3 times each time we TRY to comunicate gets annoying realy fast
Running a raid without voice chat is perfectly possible provided that the game has a good macro system.
Just do some preparation as a raid leader.
Put all tactics of bosses into a macro beforehand.
Create
"<Target> please lower DPS, don't draw agro!"
"Attention <Target>! Don't slack!"
"Full stop on DPS!"
Macros.
It's actually more efficient then voice chat if you get some practice. Just tell everyone to disable all channels save raid chat. And you can instantly send messages across. After a few runs you'll know where to find each macro and it's really easy.
The only problem is that you'll have to select teammates. This may sometimes distract you. So make sure that the raid leader is something like a mage who can spare some attention.

Or worse, your team's nigh invincible lvl 49 stone tank beg his parents to play for 5 more mins during a fight with an Arch-Villain.
