The mechanics behind the whole game would make a FFA server completely undoable without some serious revamping.
On the DAoC FFA servers, guilds could take and hold the keeps and you'd store relics in those keeps. You can't really do that with the guilds and the capitol cities in WAR. I wouldn't count on seeing a FFA server in WAR. The Dreds didn't do well enough to make the investment worthwhile for Mythic.
As for the Games Workshop people, you actually can have two of the same races fighting each other in the tabletop. They are full on armies though. I think the no FFA server will be due more to a game mechanics than by Games Workshop outright saying no.
Just to throw in a bit of info, here's a quote from Mythic's Community Rep in a recent interview:
"If by PvP-heavy you are indeed referring to a FFA based game, then unfortunately I have to say that they are indeed, and will continue to be, a niche market game.
The threat of getting jumped by another PvPer definitely enhances those actions for some people, but I definitely feel that they are a minority. In my opinion most people out there want a definite separation between PvE and PvP. "
To many people will be coming from WoW for them to start ffapvp servers imo.

The problem with FFA servers is, if they are not done right, the balance can quickly get out of hand. For example, a couple of my real life friends played Vanguard's FFA server. They said that it was all-ganking, all the time and not very fun. I played Lineage 2, which was basically FFA - except you got karma for becoming a chaotic character. So, in essense, it was FFA with some restrictions.
I just prefer the RvsR concept over anything. Battle lines are clearly drawn, and if you love PVP, there should not be any shortage of it. If you don't love pvp, you don't have to. As I said on my site, I like the fact that I can pvp all the time if ai so choose, but my 12 year old daughter can play the game, and I really don't have to worry about her getting ganked all the time. (She's the ultimate carebear lol)

What does people coming from WoW have to do with what Mythic will do with their game?
It's going to come down to 2 things; firstly the mechanics of the game. The game is built on RvR. In order to implement a FFA PvP server, drastic changes would need to be made to the game at its core. With RvR being a part of every aspect of the game, it won't be as simple as merely changing the way PvP works, as was done with DAOC on Mordred/Andred. The whole game would have to change.
The second thing you have to consider is that DAOC was Mythic's IP. WAR is not. Mythic has done well with DAOC in providing something for every play style (FFA servers, co-op servers, classic servers, etc), but in order for them to do something like this with WAR they're going to need approval from Games Workshop.
One of the podcasts on the official site explains the way the zones, PvP, and RvR work.
Basically, each zone will have areas that are for RvR where there will be open PvP. As the zones become higher in level (closer to the capital cities) the overall area of that zone designated for RvR/PvP will become more plentiful. I suppose the idea is to integrate more and more PvP into the gameplay as your level increases.
With that system in place, FFAPVP servers are unnecessary: people who want to PvP can just stay in the area(s) of the zone designated for RvR/PvP.

I know it's faction based, but will they release one like DAoC did?
Judging by how (not) successful the FFA PVP servers were I'm thinking the short answer would be no......
Which is a shame...I had a great time on Mordred...but it wasn't for everyone The pvp server's were great back then another game that had great pvp ffa server was asherons call 2, That was a great game i miss it so much...
Playing: Everthing Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW. I have played every MMO that has ever come out.
I think FFA pvp only really works if the game was designed that way. When they just turn all the pvp flags on with a game not designed for it, it is just stupid.
Mordred was fun at first, but after DAOC had been out a couple years, if you tried to make a character on Mordred you couldn't even finish creating your character before you'd get wacked. It was pretty retarded over all. That's why it died.
tbh, i like pvp alot, and imo the system they are making for WAR seems pretty nice.
If anyone remembers it, Paul was talking about a chaos chicken in case someone wanted to gank you. am I the only who think that FFA pvp is no problem then? as i "think" its gonna be is, that if a much higher lvl player tryes to attack a lower lvl, ull be turned into a chicken and can run away without taking any dmg ? "If" its gonna work like that, i see no problems in creating FFA pvp...

Haha, err no, the higher players turn into chaos chickens if they are in lower tier zones, not the other way around
It's a shame they won't have FFA server's, as thats the main factor in me choosing AOC over WAR. But with that said, if they make PVP death's meaningless in AOC (read: only blood money) then I'll probably end up playing WAR anyway.
I like the freedom of FFA, as well as the enhanced (guild) politics, consequences and randomness it brings. I also hate that in most RvR games the people I always find myself wanting to kill end up being on my own bloody team.

Exactly! I've been in numerous groups, and about half of the groups had an "element" that FFA would handle just to my liking
I dont see a reason why someone would even want a FFA PVP server on War, there is already gonna be PVP everywhere and im sure of a dueling system. If they do decide to put a ffa pvp server in I will test it, but it really takes alot away from the warhammer storyline, as they say it is to take over the enemies capital city, People cry about griefing and getting ganked, i couldn't imagine what a WAR ffa pvp server would look like , I just dont see a need for a ffa pvp server. BUT maybe WAR will make a FFA Battleground.. Blood Bath <evilgrin>
I have to say that I oppose a FFA PVP server. The game is simply not structured to support it. Hell, entire zone paradigms would have to change in order to do FFA PvP. There is already going to be more than enough PvP play in the game. Letting Dwarves gang Dwarves really would not add anything to the mix.

Weird... Why would you oppose to a server that you probably wouldnt even play on? hmmm....
My suggestion would lean towards a semi-FFA server where it was still RVR, but without the ability to toggle pvp on/off outside the RVR/PVP areas. That wouldnt be impossible... just more WAR hehe
To many people will be coming from WoW for them to start ffapvp servers imo.
Actually, WoW is more FFAPvP then WAR currently looks to be.
Think about it.
On a WoW PvP server, any member of the opposite faction, of any level, at any time, any where can be attacked.
In WAR, the PvE and PvP areas in each zone are seperate, players of the opposing faction cannot enter the PvE areas of the other side.
If you try to go to a lower Tier zone then is appropriate for your character's level, you will be turned into a chicken/chaos chicken and uneffective in PvP.
So, WAR is actually less FFA PvP then a WoW PvP server.

I think it's safe to figure he's voicing the general viewpoint of Mythic on this matter.
For me, PVP is much more fun if it has a purpose.
FFA servers generally degenerate pretty quickly. I'm very much looking forward to the RvsR aspect of Warhammer Online. It looks really interesting.

I seriuosly hope they set up a ffa server. Mordred was the BEST! Anyway... Daoc had safe-zones in the cities.
Theres nothing like a little killing-spree
IMHO if you want a FFA style of PvP game play go play a FPS deathmatch game, L2, EVE Online or Darkfall if it ever ships in our lifetime.
WAR was built on factional RVR game play from day one and PvP is setup in this game so that it has a meaningful purpose.

Well... Im buying the game with ffa or no ffa. But if they choose to launch with a ffa server, then thats my first choice
