If you were ever curious about it, at least give it a shot after ch.6 goes live (this week). This is going to add quite a few nice things such as player story telling abilities and beast mastery (plust a LOT more, one of the biggest updates in a very long time)
honestly its one of the most content filled MMO's out there if you like sci-fi offering both planetary adventure and spacecraft combat.

You guys got me interested in the game as I am not one to listen to whiners who like to complain about the "Good old" days. I downloaded the trial version. So far so good. Movement is kind of awkward IMHO when compared to other MMO's but I like the laser gun combat as I've grown bored of melee combat as it's the staple bread and butter of many a fantasy game. I like the mounts / vehicles in game and feel of the planet / town I am on. Overall I might stick around and play SWG a little further and see if I truly like it or not. I haven't gotten into the crafting system yet. Of course I am also trying to download Saga of Ryzom but it's not behaving well at the momement. :(

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

Hereis a guide to help you set up SWG to a "normal" MMO keyboard (WASD) movement with auto combat instead of clicky clicky shooting writen by our very own Obraik.

I'm also downloading the trial at this moment.  I'm curious to see what's become of the game.  I'll approach it with an open mind and a clean slate.  However, there is no way to ignore the controls and polish that we've all come to expect.

One thing I really hate is how very few of the few Sci-fi games are original licenses. They all end up IP's and that just creates problems because they never live up to anyones expectations. None of the big name IP's have had any success. SWG was always a train wreck, The Matrix bombed....Star Trek is a disaster waiting to launch.

I would like to see some Sci-Fi games built off of old P&P IP's if anything.

    Traveller would be ideal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traveller_%28role-playing_game%29

Maybe: 2300 AD, The Morrow Project, Twilight 2000, Rifts ......on and on.

Thanks for the FOA mention Torak. The info that is up on this site has defintely not been updated with our latest creations in the Alpha world environment but it's defintely looking much better then 2 months ago. For example the mech in my sig is the same low poly model that we're currently getting rigged/animated to be put into that world.

We totally agree and we dig the old school p&p games. It's what we are basing our combat/roleplay off of. We are utilizing the Hero System. I loved playing old Traveller and Rifts myself along with many others on the team.

As a matter of fact we're currently playing a copy of our Force of Arms game on the Hero Central website in the old p&p fashion just to make sure we're flushing out character creation and combat correctly and the way we think it should be, right from the start.

Auto Assault --- I actually liked this game.  I thought it was well done for what it was.  The problem was the lack of people playing.  Empty servers for an mmo is bad.
    Vhayne,

Not sure if you're still monitoring your OP still, but I'd like to re-invite you to AA.  The server merge and four Updates have made this game even stronger.

Of course, it still is a smallish community, but no longer does it make you REALLY feel like your the last one on Earth!  I jokingly refer to the game as a MMOG, but my acronym stands for Marginally Multi-player Online Game instead.

BioMek and Mutants have a couple very active Clans...and believe it or not populations are actually on the upswing.

Anyway, agree with your "No more Elves, Dwarves, and Gnomes" plea...grab your keys and strap on your Auto-Cannon...it's time to take a Sunday drive!

Thanks for the invitation. :)  I might download the trial (if there is one) and try it out again.

I'm goofing around with SWG right now, and immediately after getting into the game, I found a serious issue.  The controls suck. :(  I had totally forgotten that you can't jump/drop down from ledges.  And I still can't find any way to strafe.  WASD movements are there, but the A and D keys are for turning.  In conjunction with a mouse for targeting, this is redundant.  It's also awkward and not "with-the-times".

Other than that, I've found some more problems.  The sound for combat isn't very good, nor is it accurate.  I get a sound when my staff hits a critter, about 75% of the time.  This type of problem in the tutorial, isn't a very good sign of things to come.

But I'm still trying to keep an open mind.....

I miss earth and beyond terribly. It was so interesting delving into the mystery of the game and uncovering its story piece by piece. Unfortunately UO and TSO needed servers and EA was cheap and didnt want to buy new ones so just threw EnB out. 6months- 1 year later TSO drops lower subscription rates than when EA announced closure of EnB but thats nothing at all.....

For the past few years I have dabbled in EVE, i don't particularly like it. I do like the economy setup and the politics but otherwise its useless. People say how stunning it is graphically but i just dont see it. If they focused as much on gameplay as they did on graphics it would be so much better as a game.

Recently Ive been playing Vendetta Online for over a year now and i think its a great game. Lots of updates and it has changed a lot in one year then I expected it to. Its gradually getting better and closer to 2.0! I can't wait until i can own my own station and capital ship. Then my guildmates and I can man the turrets and fly around having a really good time muhaaa....!

You can  pretty much change everything in the keymap options to work the way you like it.  I'd try a few of the preset keymap options first to see if that changes it to the way you like it.

Endless Ages was by far my favorite sci-fi game. Though suppoedly it's getting an overhaul and changing its name to Phylon. It's in beta right now so you can always check that out.

My opinion is that Sci-fi isn't seen as "mainstream" yet.

For some reason playing with elves, wizrds, and riding around on mythical beasts isn't geeky, but badass space crafts with lasers, Giant Robots, and space colonies are.  I think space is way cooler than playing in some "Tolkenesque" world.

I mean space is SPACE.  If they threw in giant robots I would be in.

Something like a Wing Commander MMO would be cool.  Or Mech Warrior, or anything in the Battle Tech Universe.  Perhaps an Asian Company will snag the rights to a Robotech MMO.

I think the emphasis has to be the combat for anyone to buy into a Sci-fi MMO.  It has to be intense, and fast paced.  I'm thinking combat like Zone of Enders (first one).

Only when it comes to MMO's. There is no shortage of good Sci-Fi (or any other theme) in other gaming genres.

MMO players seem pretty content to play the same game over and over with different skins though. Look at the success of LotR and the contrivesy over Vanguard. They want this fantasy crap.

Someone needs to make a Sci-fi MMOFPS that is good, planetside is ok and it’s the only thing that is out. Sci-fi MMOFPS a huge market just waiting for a game. I hope it will be a Sci-fi game. I want something fun to play that’s not all this pointless leveling, auto attacking, 5 hour raid to get nothing, bull.

Anyway we can only hope for a real MMO at some point in the future.

I should have elaborated, but yeah thats exactly what I meant.

Even Warhammer is starting to look WOWish to me.

All the innovation is in the Asian MMOs, but the quality isn't always there.

    Eh give, and take.

I'm tempted to mention Universal Century: Gundam Online, or UCGO.

Brilliant game if you like Gundam and the skill system from Ultima Online.

There are a few catches, like the game never came out outside of Japan, so all the sign up process is in Japanese (There is a guide to walk you through it on the URL at the end of this post), most of the players (obviously) talk to each other in Japanese annnd the English community is very small... oh and respect the japanese culture ^^

Good game though, lets you play and fight over austrilia and in space, but be warned, its primarally a PvP game, much like EvE or something.

But aside from all that *ahem*

Anyways check out http://gundamonline.pbwiki.com if you're intrested, head to the IRC and ask around, and if i'm on there, send me an IM :)

I'm banking on Huxley. The gameplay videos I have seen look very promising.

The problem with most of the Sci-Fi that I've seen is that it's exactly the same as the Fantasy MMO's except in place of orks and trolls, there some kind of alien species and in place of Swords and Shields there's laser pistols and energy shields.  C'mon people think outside the box a bit.  Give us something truly different, not just the same game in a different colored package.  That's no different than giving us another Fantasy MMO based off another IP.  I want something different.  Eve attempted something different, but it's not quite my style, I need a little more visceral and less "glitzy".  I thought I would like Auto Assault, but it's poorly done in my humble opinion.  I like City of Heroes, but it's not deep enough.  Earth and Beyond was exactly what I wanted, but EA screwed that up.
