Warhammer Online = Bright and Cartoony = Failure.........
Some of us "veteran" players are closely watching this game, and you know what?
Many fear it will be like WOW. To ME, it looks and feels like WoW.
The game still looks very exciting and fun, though. I look forward to trying it. It might not be for ME because it is so PvP-oriented; I enjoy PvP but mainly am a PvE adventurer.
EDIT: let's be fair. The cartoony look is not as bad in WAR as in WoW, though.

Dont look at the old pictures of WAR before they became EAmythic, look at the pictures of war NOW. There is not a single thing that looks similar to wow.... and it uses the daoc engine so it plays like daoc not wow, you cant run around and 1 button circle straife to win all of your melee fights or bunny hop around while using insta cast spells either.
Your healers can melee, heck even your casters can melee. trust me as someone who has played the game and played the heck out of it, it dosent play like wow as all
The biggest one for me though is not including Skaven who are one of the most popular races in Warhammer.
I'd like to see Skaven in-game too, but one of the more popular races? Where are you getting this from? I've seen less Skaven players than ANY other race...hell, I've seen more Bretonnian and Lizardmen players, and the armies are significantly newer.

That's not necessarily the perception I get from Warhammer Fantasy. I think this perception comes from 40k (which is very "dark and grim"), since it's more popular and people are more likely to have seen it, and hence, based their perceptions of GW games as a whole on it.

Ah GorkaMorka! I never actually played the TT games, but in my distant past I had a lodger who was a Games Workshop employee, he was a painter for the shop displays. Lost count of the times he was sent home with full armies to paint for a rush new product launch. Being handy with a brush I used to regularly help out just for fun and my favourite of all the sets i painted were GorkaMorka.
Loved the crazy Orc helicopters and battle carts, the machetes and huge bulky guns, so much fun to paint up. Though i still dont play i do still buy figures and paint them up for my son to play with.
The Ork race is a largely comic relief from the usual grim outlook the other races give and thats what I like about them so much. If the Witch Hunter class is a flop I'm instantly rerolling an Ork Choppa
The minis are painted bright as hell so they not only stand out when you're playing, but because a red trukk goes fasta. They've made an effort to make the MMO look like the tabletop game, but that distinction will be lost on an audience that knows only Warcraft and not warhammer. All most people will see is a violent, bright cartoon.
I would just say that low system specs and PVP attract kids, not elves. Dark elves eat kids. You don't want to know what followers of Slaanesh do to them.
Actually, low system specs and PvP do not attract kids. Quite the contrary, PvE is what attracts kids. Kids don't like dieing, and generally you die MUCH less in PvE. They also don't like a penalty for dieing. WoW caters to that demographic. Low system specs attracts everyone... not just kids.
This game is going to filter out kids well. If the dieing in the constant PvP doesn't make them quit, then they are actually a quality player, despite their age.
I'll agree on the grim and gritty feel somewhat missing from the world/ graphics, something akin to what we saw depicted in the Warhammer source material/ novels / rpg/ comic books would have suited me much more for this incarnation of the game. I'd have preferred that over the direction we're seeing now.
That's not to say humor didn't play a role (just look at some of the abilities granted to some TT units, brilliant), but I strongly believe that for myself, it was the juxtaposition of the dark, gritty world and the humor that gave the game / universe it's charm.
All in all I'm excited about EA's Warhammer anyway, but I know where you're coming from. Hopefully Beastmen, Skaven & undead make an appearance someday. Truly bummed about Skaven not being a playable race though (at release anyway). Perhaps they'll pop up in PvE.
The graphics for Warhammer is nothing to complain about. Because I know FOR A FACT, that soon as it is released there will be people coming to boards complaining they cant run the game. Look at Vanguard, so many people couldnt run the game on opening day. So if they are going for mid-range/low-range PCs to run it, fine by me.

good thing most of the people who played daoc already have graphics cards good enough to handle daoc esq graphics that are going to be in war.... i dont see a problem.
i wouldn't care, it's WAR... warhammer... possibly the best lore, history and stories since Tolkein.
The fantastic detailed account of Nagash and his dealings got me straight into the game when i was younger (that and the new revamping of 40k; the orc/blood angels armageddon one). Kinda ironic to think the whole old world was saved by the skaven (and a crazy prisioner). who'd have thought it :-p
Warhammer Online = Bright and Cartoony = Failure.........
+ Warhammer Online has only 6 of the most boring Warhammer races, theres ok 1 race of elves but why do you need two? Why not just have none and put Vampire counts and Lizardmen in there or even Skaven?
Elves attract kids which means this games going to be 13 year old l33t kids heaven like WOW.
Your insights are plain and your arguments are weak.
Next thing you know, you'lle be calling it a WoW clone, which is still the best joke I've ever heard.

I'm happy for WAR actually...It will keep the epeen flinging Kiddies away from AoC :-)

If you actually read AoC's features some things they have will be a way bigger "kiddie" magnet than WAR's.

God. I can't tell how much is wrong with this topic...and you
Warhammer = Warhammer Style
Warhammer Online = Warhammer Style.
Have you seen the Miniatures? They look EXACTLY like the In-Game Models.
Have you played Mark of Chaos, or Dawn of War? Orcs looked cartoonish, but they were one hell of darkness and gritty-ness.
Games Workshop has to approve every single Design that makes it into the Game.
Games Workshop, you know, the guys who INVENTED the Warhammer IP, with it's own Art Style.
And Warhammer Online has 6 of the most popular races in it.
You need two races of elves because 1st: They are their Arch Enemy.
And 2nd: WoW's Night Elves were always the most popular. Now the Blood Elves are.
By giving both parties an elven race straight from the start, they make one step towards Population Balance.
You can't add Vampire Counts that easily into the game, because the normal Unit-strong Units are Mindless Zombies who have no control over their actions...would be like watching a movie of your char running everywhere because you can't decide. THe actually cool Vampires on the other hand are WAY too strong to be normal, balanced Player characters. Same reason Ogres probably won't ever be added. Remember: GW has to approve everything. And they probably won't approve "OK, 1 Ogre vs. 1 Goblin Squig Herder is a balanced fight".
Skaven and Lizardmen are VERY likely the first new racial Pairing, which will come through an expansion. Nothing official, but among Warhammer Buffs, it's very likely. Reason they didn't make it into Release? Mythic had to decide between 3 Racial Pairings, otherwise the Development of the Game would've taken more years. They said they'd love to be able to include every single Race as playable Race into WAR, but it's not possible. And Now you have 2 Humans, very Popular Races in MMORPGs, two Elves, very Popular races in MMORPGs, Dwarfs and Orcs. It's a guaranteed initial success that way, and with Expansions WILL come more races. THat's already official.
WoW is no Kid's Heaven. I dunno, ever were in a WoW Guild? How many 13 year old kids did you ACTUALLY meet in there? In TS?
I myself knew exactly 2 throughout my whole 4 server wide WoW experience.
WAR won't be a Kid's Heaven either. Instead, you'll have Thousands of People ~35 years of age, who once played Warhammer (in whatever form), but had to give up because they hadn't the time/money anymore. Now with WAR, they'll get a fairly casual experience for a very cheap price.
Nothing can be said for sure, of course. But since you were oh so sure about the "l33t kids", I am sure it won't happen.
Now please leave, you utterly failed in giving even ONE valid point why WAR won't be a success, please leave the world now.

That's the truth? Oh, right, because you've posted it on the internet, so it must be true!
Time will tell... then we'll see who's playing what.
Just so you know, WoW uses the "carrot on a stick" method where you run to the dead-end and get to showoff your "uber" gear... that is what attracts the "1337" kiddies.
Warhammer Online will be completely different to WoW in every way. You only need to watch the Podcasts, and that'll confirm my statement.
Graphics don't make a game, gameplay makes a game.

I feel like linking pictures. Yes, that is what I"ll do. This Bright and Cartoony thing will fade eventually I'm sure.

Very dark and grimy tones to this picture:
I think this one is an example of what it's going to look like with the new lighting engine in place. Looks much better than the current screenshots of the Chosen.
A link to the bigger version, since some of the details are washed out when it's this small: Chaos Chosen
And finally a video that shows what happens when they start putting the WAR in. Meaning blood, body parts, and such. Just a short vid of a bloody snowfield.

Warhammer Online website in the Screenshot section. lol
They just added it today actually.
If you compare that to the older in-game screenshot of the same Chosen with the same armor and sword, you'll see that the graphics in the newer picture are more completed.
The new one looks much closer to this Concept Art picture than the old one does:

Graphics don't make a game, gameplay makes a game. i agree that gameplay does make the biggest impact on a games popularity. I personally take graphics into huge consideration as well, but that is me. I still have high hopes for this game and i will give it a good try before i write it off.

Bought the rights to Necromunda and Gorkamorka? Now that will be fun.

I belive the same thing, but every time i say it I am called "out of touch"
kids like pve. They like to be "rewarded" and they like to be a soloist/individual
the older generation likes competition, likes the rush of overcoming odds to pull a rocky esq comeback and win
i think thats why the general age in daoc was so high, the game was hard and the pve was so non fun
This http://pc.ign.com/objects/573/573062.html is what I was personally hoping for from an online Warhammer game.
