so both games beta signups are up and running, and hopefully everyone who wants to will get to experience these games before they go gold. but i was wondering what the concensus was in the community about what the pros and cons will be of both games.
WAR seems to me not like a wow clone, but more like a wow2.0 or something. I like a more upgraded quest and pvp battle system but the RvR system seems to similar for the games to not be really close to one another. wow, and war that is. i was wondering what the reader thought really set WAR apart from the rest. and my biggest fear is i see a huge potential for cookie cutter race/class which is super-lame these days. also one of the artists used the term "Teir 4 armor" and i allmost screamed WOW CL0n3Zr?!?!?!?
AOC seems pretty new to me, alot of "NEW" things have been propsed but i really just see them borrowing much of their game from shadowbane. archtypes, siege combat etc. ii'm wondering how it will all work out. they don't seem to tell us much. the only thing that really worries me about AOC is the whole Xbox PC division of community, and whispers of Xbox players getting better treatment through extra carrotts... which if it's limited wont matter, but if they have excess to higher end items or dungeons or something that would be pretty lame. as long as it's a balance it'll be fine.
just wondering what ya'll think .please this thread is intended to be an honest debate on neutral ground, i'm not saying one game is better than the other and i'd like to have anyone who replys to follow this model.
i will say that in comparison to mmo world shere history whatever,
WAR = WOW2.0
AOC = SHADOWBANE2.0
from what i've seen so far.
Comments
AOC does not feel like Shadowbane. Shadowbane is pure open pvp, AOC is more pve than pvp IMHO. A sheep in wolfs clothes.
Speculation FTW.
CURRENTLY PLAYING SHAIYA
Shadowbane was 100% PvP, with item looting and pretty much a game based around 'banes' (huge Kingdom vs. Kingdom wars).
There were no quests in Shadowbane, only PvP.
Well, this game failed probably because, well, after 2-3 months everyone was max level with uber gear, so the new people who tried to come and play would get ganked...
Actually, I played it when it went free and this is exactly what happened when I got out of the lvl. 1-10 starting area, over and over and over.
Age of Conan starts with the first 20 levels as being single player, kind of a tutorial to online gaming.
You get quests and learn the ropes, there's no human competition until you complete this.
You may think it's lame, but at least this way you are ready for what may or may not hit you once you get to the online portion.
Overall, a pretty poor comparison on your part. AoC will dominate because of its newbie-friendly beginning, and its veteran-friendly aspects.
Toontown > ALL.
Because those are the two big ones on everyone's radar. Eastern designed MMOs just don't catch on well with Westerners. Take Ragnarok 2 for example. The game ideas that I have read sound great, but I can't get past the graphical design. (keep in mind there is nothing wrong with the design it just isn't for me) It comes across to "kiddie" to me. I also do not like the effeminate look of all the Male characters in Asian designed MMO games. Alot of NA/EU customers agree. There is just too wide a gap in design ideas between west and east currently. Also keep in mind that eastern companies do not have to spend anywhere near the same amount to produce their games as their western counterparts. Since the markets are so totally different. The Western Market for MMOs (while smaller in population then the eastern market) is much more profitable then the eastern market. Do to this they have to spend a lot more on making their games and certain things are expected for Western games that Eastern games do not have (nor want in most instances). For instance the Western market is moving more and more toward realism in their games. They want more and more photo realistic gaming environments, while eastern gamers seem to want to escape realism in their games and get a more fantasical environment. Of course other things make the gap large such as differences in gameplay ideas, leveling, PVP, quests, etc.
So honestly for a board that is primarily Western gamers the big upcoming games (coming out soon) are going to be AoC and WAR.
Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

okay one: " Also keep in mind that eastern companies do not have to spend anywhere near the same amount to produce their games as their western counterparts"No. Wrong.
Second, who is talking about asian MMO's? There are plenty of other western MMO's people are looking forward to. Chronicles of Spellborn, Fallen Earth, Gods and Heroes, Pirates of the Burning sea, but oh no, its all WAR and Age of Conan.

Besides, I'd rather have people that know how to play the game at level 21...
I think those of us who played tabletop versions of Warhammer know exactly what game we will play. Yes, WoW came first in the mmo genre, but Warhammer is using the lore and artwork developed over 20 years of their TT games. I for one am glad they are sticking with the look and lore they are, even though it will draw the inevitable WoW clone statements, because it means that Games Workshop is really taking an active role in the game and developing it with their existing fanbase in mind. Now if only the servants of the Great Horned Rat were a playable race, I would be completely committed. But from what I've seen so far, they are doing an excellent job of balancing things out, drawing upon the lore and history that makes most sense for an mmo format. I like the whole RVR environment they're drawing on. This isn't simply going to be a few 60's (or 70's) raiding the Crossroads, but rather an all out seige on an enemy capital city. Yes, there is nothing really very innovative about WAR, drawing upon other games for ideas and concepts (definitely DAoC), but the fact that I enjoy so much of what Games Workshop has done in the TT market will get at least a few months sub out of me. Honestly, I wish they had decided to go with a Warhammer 40k mmo instead, then I'd really be excited, because yes, I am starting to get a little sick of the fantasy genre.
As far as AoC is concerned, yes, I will try that too. I don't really understand why it has to be one or the other. Looks interesting, loved the old comics that my dad had saved and I found as a kid. But again, don't really see anything truly innovative about it. I've given up waiting for some magical mmo messiah that will be the be all and end all of all mmo's, after the fiasco that was Dark and Light and VG's problems. There never has been and never will be a "greatest mmo ever", it's a pipe dream that embittered mmo vets cling to. Just give them both a try and play whatever you like.
MMORPG Maker
Well, supposedly the 360 people won't be playing on the same servers as the PC people but it's still up for debate for Conan.
And also I'm much looking forward to AoC over War... the battle system sort of reminds me of Fable, a lot. Fable battle system in a MMO is the best thing ever. All my friends and I are very excited for this. PVP does seem to be a huge aspect of Conan, but it's not what the entire game is about. But I do believe PVP has a greater role than that of WoW.
I also read some developers stating they may include some method of bypassing the whole level 1 - 20 solo thing after you've already done it once. However, you aren't totally alone during that time. As long as it's day time you can play with other new people in that same area. Night time you are 100% alone. During these first 20 levels apparently you're able to sleep in the inn to switch it from day to night and night to day. Once you hit 20 you can no longer do this and it becomes persistant.
WAR to me looks well, like WoW unfortunately. Not to mention the movies I've seen from it on youtube have some terribly annoying sound effects and lame animations. Who knows how this may change though by the time it's released. I signed up for this beta also, despite not having a genuine interest in it nor do I like that style of battle system.
AoC promises a lot more new stuff to the MMO world, and sort of looks like people will be playing in the world of 300 or Gladiator.
Im guessing you know nothing about WAR.. how can WAR be a WoW clone if Warhammer started like 20 years before Warcraft.. if anything the early games of warcraft would be a clone of warhammer..
Teir 4 armor is refering to the zone teir 4... its not like WoW, maybe you should learn more about the game before you scream "CL0n3Zr!"

No. Wrong.
Actually in most instances it is right. (keep in mind that most Eastern MMOs are not released in the west at all, so I am not talking about the ones that are released in the west as well, since this takes a lot more money to accomplish)

Yes there are other Western MMOs, but either they are not from big name producers (so are not the "big upcoming games") or they do not have set release dates.

So if War is going to be clone of WoW does that mean it will have the same melee system, good lord i hope not, or the same magic system, eh maybe. Does it mean it will have a UI er wait wow did invent the UI didn't they. What exactly makes it a clone? Tthe artwork, how many different ways can you portray a orc I wonder. Besides the fact that warcraft was originaly HEAVILY influcend from Warhammer origanal lore and artwork how did that get reversed when it comes to MMO's.
These argurements are retarded, the mere fact that when you make a fantasy or sci-fi mmo or whatever, its dam near impossible to be completly origanal. I've played WoW along with several other mmo's and the only thing I can say that is origanal about it is how dumb-down it is for the masses. Its like saying Ford ripped off Chevy with the whole steering wheel and four wheels thing or vice versa.
To be fair, I am a big fan of Mythic with Dark Age being one of my favorites, so I will be trying warhammer. I am prayin they don't try to copy everthing that "works" in WoW like mechanics and gameplay. I am hoping they expand more on what I enjoyed most in Dark Age like how the melee works, ( they can take the magic system tho lol), and the pvp works. Especially the realm vs. realm it really adds an element that allthough i don't use all the time its really nice to have there when i want .
Realm vs. realm will make War really stand out from WoW and the reason that I and alot of people who fondly remember it in DAOC that are playing WoW now come back to mythic.
So untill you actually play the game and experiance the mechanics and actual gameplay ,I don't see how you can judge by screenshots. The lore makes this argument a bit harder cause it appears War is copying but anyone who know the history of Blizard and Warhammer would understand why.
Alot of what makes a game great comes from the overall effect including many subtle details in gameplay and mechanics that you might not pay attention too till you try another game.
Honestly whatever you think WoW did origanil it probaly didn't. What Blizzard did do right was get alot of what worked into their game. Questing, mechanics, all that. If War does the same thing and maybe one step better then blizzard how are they different.
I think theres interest in these two games because of the david vs goliath factor.
