Well, that's probably right that it's good to have things in common with a partner, particularly in terms of religion and culture, which can be pretty big things not to have to share. Skin colour does often correlate with religion and culture, but by no means is it any kind of indicator in itself.
Social acceptance could be a reasonable issue to bring up if you're living in an area rife with racism, and there's an increased risk of social rejection or even assault for a mixed race couple.
That said, this kind of example, and from the OP, are often just excuses, hiding prejudice.

Where we live, mixed race couples are extremely common. I mean, EXTREMELY. It's not really an issue here, so worrying about that seems a little out of touch with the reality that you can see if you just look around. Except, of course, that my mom sees how common it is, and comes to the conclusion that she needs to lecture my kids about it. Hence the . Also, I live in a very racially mixed neighborhood (it's working class, about 50/50 black and white), so my kids have a lot more exposure to black people than I ever had growing up; I never spoke to a black person until I was 18 and had moved out. My mom isn't particularly happy about us living in this neighborhood either.
My husband and I have a mixed religion marriage and very different backgrounds. We've had a lot of challenges, and we've done everything but throw in the towel and divorce on a few occasions, but the challenge just makes it interesting to me. It comes down to 2 things:
1. The main, real, reason is.... to paraphrase Dennis (sp?) Leary...... like it or not, dark skin is genetically dominate. The "leaders" of the White-American community who don't want their daughters dating this group have a fear that their genetically inferior skin will be "wiped out" if their daughters date Black American guys.
2. The rest of White Americans who don't want their daughters dating this group are simply lemmings, followers, following along conciously, or sub-consciously.
Where does that leave you? IMHO simply date whoever you get along with. I was raised to go by the education level of someone when considering getting together. (IE: My parents would frown on the womenfolk in our family IF they dated a guy who was a dropout, who was not college educated). Do things in order - Spend 100% of your time going after your education, get a good career job. Then worry about finding a date.

It's true that you can be prejudice without racist. I can understand how you can not want your child to marry a person of a different race than you... For instance, my friend who is 100% Mexican will only date Mexican girls, not because he's racist or anything (he has a lot of white friends, including girls). He's just so proud of his heritage, he doesn't want to convolute the gene pool, and for his kids to be as proud as he is to be 100% pure blood. Honestly, I wish I could say the same. Are people in the world really so mindless that they have to succumb to the human behavior of generalizing?
Do people realize how stupid they sound to even begin to think that they are better than someone because of the amount of pigment in their skin or lack of? And when I say that I'm talking about blacks as well as whites. Because it goes on from both sides.
Why are there black neighborhoods that have been subjugated by whites? Why do blacks insist on remaining inside a black neighborhood instead of telling thugs to go to hell? Why would a person doing hiring consider the amount of pigment in a persons skin over their qualifications or behavior when filling a position? Why is there "black music" and "white music"? Why do black people make fun of white people and white people make fun of black people? Why are there organizations like the KKK and the New Black Panthers?
The fact of the matter is that it is all simple minded and from my perspective boring. Yeah, boring. I'm tired of this racial crap. It seems like by now every race would be over it. Yet, we all keep perpetuating this f'd up myth that because our skin color is different we are different in our character.
We are in the year 2007 and we are still reeling around in religious b.s., racial b.s., political b.s., societal b.s., and we've all been through it over and over again in history. WHY????
I'm bored with the hatred, the separation and segregation, the elitism, all that garbage. We could be so much better than that, but we insist on living in this medieval mindset that is holding us back.
It seems like we are on the verge of doing something great, but something is holding us back. Is it fear? Are we scared of being a great? Are we scared of succeeding in something? Are we scared of giving up the past?

It comes down to 2 things:
1. The main, real, reason is.... to paraphrase Dennis (sp?) Leary...... like it or not, dark skin is genetically dominate. The "leaders" of the White-American community who don't want their daughters dating this group have a fear that their genetically inferior skin will be "wiped out" if their daughters date Black American guys.
2. The rest of White Americans who don't want their daughters dating this group are simply lemmings, followers, following along conciously, or sub-consciously.
Where does that leave you? IMHO simply date whoever you get along with. I was raised to go by the education level of someone when considering getting together. (IE: My parents would frown on the womenfolk in our family IF they dated a guy who was a dropout, who was not college educated). Do things in order - Spend 100% of your time going after your education, get a good career job. Then worry about finding a date.
Succumb? It's as natural to people as breathing. It makes things easier to digest for people. Despite suits and ties, and fancy sportscars, and all the modern trappings humans use to fool themselves into thinking they are something more, they are simply dumb animals. With technology that makes them more efficient at killing.
Human nature. Or rampant stupidity and/or greed. Or America Idol was on. Take your pick.
The funny thing is.... EVERYONE on this planet is a mutt! LOL! And yes, Mexicans are mutts too. There is no such thing as a 100% pure blood anything. They are a combination of Spaniards, Natives (Aztecs, Olmecs, Toltecs, etc...), Irish, Jewish, Asians (Chinese for example) and a small part other Europeans.
The only groups that come closest to being homoginized are the Japanese, Zulu, and the Native Australians (the ones who play those 12 foot long musical pipes). All educated Whites know the master race spiel is moot, since every sinlge guy in the German highest command during WW2 did NOT have blonde hair.
Next, every human is 99.99% the same. Everyone has the same organs. Everyone's blood clots the same way. Everyone has cones in their eyes that work the same way. Everyone has villi in their intestines that function the same way. Everyone has mitochondria in every single cell that functions the same way. Litterally thousands of examples can be made.
Try being a white guy dating a girl with a real hispanic family. Or my friend is dating a native american girl and every time he goes out on the reservation to pick her up he gets the worst reception ever and im not talking about cell phones.

yeah it still happens, my grandparents would totally freak if i brought home a black girl. more and more people are realizing how dumb this attitude is but its slow going because most people dont easily change their attitudes unless they are directly affected by person or event. take a look at your own family and try to challenge their long held beliefs like about socialism or abortion or which political parties they identify with. its so true that you cant teach old dogs new tricks. take my gramps for example, almost a year ago he had cancer and most of his digestive tract was removed, do you think that stops him from drinking and smoking? no way. do you think i could change how he feels about certain social issues? nope, not unless it directly affects him or my grams. they're not bad people, they love their family and stuff but they are goin to think what they are goin to think, no matter what.

um...if anyone said negroid around me i would definately laugh my ass off in their face. groups pick their own names and references. jews can call themselves whatever they like, same with blacks, asians, gays, or whatever. you cant make up a name if your not part that group, thats just the way it works. so i can call myself a honky or whitebread or cracker or saltine or whatever i want but i cant just make up a word or use a super old outdated one like negroid for another group of people, not unless i want to stay healthy.
also race is also such an outdated term. when one says race i think they really mean nationality or culture or i'll even take ethinicity (though that is a very broad term); there is just human beings. you can be from somewhere but how does that really define you? you can be black and find out that there is caucasian in you from many generations ago from slaveowners boffing their slaves or conquistadors doin the same in mexico and south america. i those cases what does race mean? culture and perception is what separates us not biology.
Anyway, you missed the point, whether or not I made up the word or if it's super outdated, the response "i'll beat your ass" to the use of the word is only indicitive of his ignorance of what the word means, much like your post.

just because something is in the dictionary doesnt mean that is widely accepted or used or offensive.

It's not the meaning of the word that is wrong, it is the contest in which has been used for centuries that make it wrong to use it, in particular by white people.
Negro is a derogatory word, the fact that Hip Hop stars call themself Negros doesn't justify white people doing the same.
They call each other motherfucker as well, I am sure you'll understand that is not right that white people refer to them as motherfuckers too.
Negro is a Spanish word, you are American and speak English, you don't need to use that word anyway, the right word in English is Black so why not refer to them with this term?

Negro is not a derogatory term. If it was, why do official institutions for black people use the word negro? Negro league baseball. Negro league hall of fame. United negro college fund. Look up the word negro in other languages. Negro means black in spanish, and portugese. Nero in italian is similar. In latin niger means black. These words existed way before slavery. If people add some extra meaning to a word that means a color then that is their ignorance.
It is a big deal. I am sick and tired of choosing words carefully as to not offend some over-sensative person. Toughen up a bit. I mean no harm.

I agree with you that in todays politically correct world you have to watch too much your language or how do you call people or things, but I believe that the negro word is still very offensive to black people if uttered by a white man.
