Dunno if you're really taking a few days off as was suggested Athelan, but I still have a question on censorship if it's no hassle. We used to have a lot of game censorship in the 90's and thus I'm not quite sure how things are now (apparently no censorship if one can provide ID, but this might only apply to sp games, dunno how it works with a mmo). Thing is I want unlimited content and chop off limbs, and I also enjoy playing in English. So, I'm wondering will there be a digital download available shortly before or at release? Will there be seperate European servers similar to WoW (personally I wouldn't mind chopping of a few European limbs as well)? Could one play with an English client on German servers or vice versa? Could German servers for instance restrict certain content, but people with the English client still be able to see it? Then again what good is it decapitating people if they don't get to witness it. Anyway, would be cool if you could share some insight on this much debated topic, thanks.
Well there shouldn't be censorship in game from what all i've see but there's an option to turn blood on and off etc, it's a mature game so it's assumed everyone that plays it is 18 or older and sadly you can't keep minors out of games it's technical unpossible.
I believe there will be US and EU servers but you won't be restricted as in WoW you can play on which one you want, that i know for sure, i'm not sure if there will be german only servers.
Question to Athelan now
You once said the prestige class crafter won't be able to master all the craft types but only 2 or 3 is that still true?

Thanks for your reply, but as you inclined yourself a M rating will probably not shut out the 'kids' completely. Now in a sp game they can't really do more to prevent this from happening, but with a MMO where the content is constantly available online and as such alterable, it might lead to some commissions interfering (not overall, but on national basis). If so, I'd like to know which 'countermeasures' are available to me (ddl, converting the client etc.). Thus I'd appreciate it if Athelan could also make a few comments on topic, so we have an official view on things.
For those new to the thread, be aware that Athlean let us know he'll be in San Francisco this week meeting with Eidos (AoC's Publisher), so he probably wont be able to check in here and answer questions until next week.
Already got my answer Jayde cleared it up on the main forums.
As for Sposocke here's your answer:
The German version of the game will be modified in order to adhere to the rules and regulations in Germany. It is simply something we as a company must do if we are to release the game in that market, and we consider Germany a very important market. We certainly do not make the rules, but if we are to operate in the German market, then we must follow them. There can only be one version sold officially in Germany, and that will be the German version that are in line with those rules. Releasing a uncut version in Germany is not a possibility as the marketplace would be allowed to sell it legally.
It will still be Conan, but there are certain elements in the game's level of gore that must be modified because of these rules and regulations.

Thanks again scougre, that's exactly the answer I feared. So much for things getting better with an id card, eh? Well however EU servers will be set up, I take it you'll be able to play on unlimited content servers even if you're billing account is in Belgium, thus I should somehow be able to pull that off as well. Hope FC is up for that and will have the possibilities in place at launch.
I am not sure about alts, prestige classes, and restrictions.
Conan will look as he did in the books/comics not the movie. Arnie doesn't really look like Conan (wrong color hair and eyes)
We have some monsters who are normal and a lot who are in camps where they patrol, and sit around and talk to eachother then go take a leak in the woods or get some more wood for the fire build things etc
There's actually a sequence in the first Conan movie; the scene where Arnie grows into adult Conan, pushing the great wheel about after his capture as a boy. He looked pretty close to canon imagery of Conan - very sullen looking, despite the wrong hair colour.
Is the game out yet? I've finished reading the Centennial edition of Conan Complete Adventures, and the Hyborian world guide..running out of Conan fixes here..

Aye, it is, except of course if they prevent people playing on those servers due to foreign billing information. Not sure which game that was but it does happen occasionally and that's what worries me a bit. Hopefully FC doesn't let it come to that.
Mind you I have quite a few imported sp versions, because back in the 90's the synchronization was crap and of course they censored a lot of the gore. But those were sp games, not sure how it works with a mmo. But yeah, I'm optimistic there will be some sort of alternative to censored content should anyone interfere.
Do items have both PvE and PvP stats, or are the stats what determines the items best use? For example:
2h battleaxe w/ +10 attack against beasts in PvE and +10 armor piercing in PvP
OR
2h battleaxe w/ +10 attack against beasts = PvE
2h battleaxe w/ +10 armor piercing = PvP
Sounds like you have to PvE to get the top PvP stuff (unless they decide to put some on the bm vendors), but you have to PvP for bm to buy items to enhance it to it's highest PvP potential?
Sorry but though I read the discussion, I didn't see any specific answer on how the actual pieces are obtained, just how they can be improved for PvP. If this is the case why didn't someone just say "You can't get the top PvP gear without PvE"? If this isn't true could someone please explain how a player can obtain items outside of vendors, mob drops, and crafters, all of which require some PvE? I don't think there is anything wrong with it, but I can understand how Neanderthal felt that his question was being dodged if the answer was that simple.
He replied several times to questions very much like that earlier in the thread. Apparently you will NOT need to do the high end PvE stuff to get your PvP gear ala WoW. PvP and PvE gear will be seperate, though not better or worse then the other. Same with crafted gear. Though yea, they didn't mention how gear is obtained. I'd suspect a mix between crafted and other stuff bought with Blood Coins.
The devs know that people 'hate' that in MMOGs like WoW you have to do all the top end boring as hell PvE stuff to be able to realistically compete (or have a snowballs chance in hell,) in PvP. I'm confident they will work around such issues, or prevent them entirely in the first place, some how. Just remember that just because things are one way in WoW, doesn't make them the same way in any other MMOGs. Look at early DAoC, you could PvP all day with gear you had made for you, and never once were you required to do any high-end PvE stuff to be able to compete in PvP. It also helps that skill > gear in AoC.

1: I'm a huge explorer. When I see a tall sweeping mountain range in a game, I immediately want to scale it. Anarchy Online was great for it's day when you could see platues in the distance and go climb them, find and jump off huge waterfalls (I had a whole group of friends that just would look for the tallest waterfalls lol.) SWG was great for this as well. Those picturesque mountains in AoC are calling to me. Can I climb them? Or will I find an artificial 'wall' 1/4 the way up them?
/agree
i always loved being able to explore and enjoy the world of the game, it's really getting annoying all the games with their walled off sections, the scenery is only as good as you're able to experience it.
1) Will the same items have different stats ala Diablo II. For example, will I be able to find the Sword of the Gods and on one sword it have +170% max dmg, +9 to stamina, and other stats...then find it again later off the same boss and this time it have +180% max dmg, +10 to stamina, blah blah blah...or will every item you find be exactly the same as its twin:) The difference in item values was kinda neat imo.
One very easy question for you!! Yeah, it was and I really missed this random generation in WoW. Apparently it was dropped because of duping, but personally I think that feature outweighed that concern and it would still have benefitted the game if they had kept this feature for green or similar items and kept the uniques (purple, orange) with stale values. So, I'm hoping for this too!
Hey Jason, must give you props for getting "attacked" with numerous of funny questions.
But like me, I feel that this game will dominate the world, hope you have good server otherwise maybe hiring me ^^, I´m a IT guy myself.. ahh stay on the topic.. sorry about that.
This topic is about blocking ability.
I must say when I saw the in-game footage of the melee classes I thought of 300, King Leonidas standing there all mad etc.
Then when I looked more deeper into the game your dev talks about the shield and correct me if I´m wrong here:
Depending where the shield is placed the opponent must attack the other side and the one with the shield can switch between right and left in order to confuse the attacker (meaning place the shield in the left hand or right).
After this I felt "Its cool" but after a while I thougt of real-combat like you stated on the E3 and all pre E3 videos, wouldn´t it be cool if players would have a manual block ability?
Imagine these two examples:
1: (without block)
Two melee soldiers fight, the concept will be to see the opponents weak sides (armor, lack of movment, etc.).
You will see very nice combos and sidesteps etc but thats it?
Dont get me wrong here, its going to be cool but why not make it even more realistic?
2. (with block ability)
Two melee soldiers fight, the concept will more be movment and counter the enemys blows, It will more be block, hit, hit block and the fights are going to be more and more complex due to many are maybe playing defensive sides etc.
Like oblivion, you can block with the shield but in AoC it would be more of sides/areas to protect.
Let us say that you´re holding a shield in your left arm, then the middle left side will be protected but the lower and higher left wouldn´t and the right side is completly nude.
So in this method, people will be more concerned about blocking if you are a defensive type and the people attacking will do any means necessary to win.
Imagine with the collision system what this will do, its going to be large battles where you can defend from arrows from the sky etc.
The downside:
How do you interact this with the caster-classes?
The block ability is a positive thing for those who can wield a shield but to the casters?
1.we have seen 2 fatality animations so far. are there more?
2. in the raids. will there be more to the raids then simply killing bosses? will there be any storyline content to them? and other puzzles and riddles to solve?
3. is there any other way to make money other then crafting and blood money?
4. ive seen a few videos with camps and players fighting in them. Is there any way that you can talk your way through a peacefull passage?
one more question. Will the classes have profession systems or jobs that correspond to what class they are? This i mean is not to say what they do in combat but for example:
a barbarian or an assasin can be some sort of bounty hunter, or taking odd jobs to make money.
a guardian could become a soldier of his country and make money through his duties.
There is going to be a plot line in the quests?, at least in the majority, or we will continue suffering quests infantile from the type: " you go to hunt 5 wolfs ", "brings to my village 15 claws of bears ". Since(as) minimum I hope that the quests are entertained.
As a gamer who just found this title a bit ago and loves everything so far I have read and many fans have been very informative, I do have a design question (sense that's what you do) about cities. Not sure if this was your aspect in design, but you did mention you are on a balance and tweaking team atm, so I figured I would throw this one at you.
Back in the day of EQ then a few years later WOW did it then LOTRO has. I have always loved the feel of "epic story battles". What part of these I loved the most were triggered events. Many of these game had maybe 1 or 2 I can remember then that was it. The exact implementation went like this ... you get a quest to defend a town, you go report to a guy and now you get zerged by incoming army of (insert whatever toons here) and have a mini epic battle.
Now the thing that really got me riled up for this game (beyond all the very cool references of DAOC sieging type of play ) was the pve sieging on your own towns. Can we expect this sort of build up around our towns as mentioned? People will probably go, "hey that's already posted up" but my question isn't that these rival cities build up if not checked. The question really is..
"Do these cities that build up around player pve cities actually at one point do a siege with actual siege equipment and the like ? or is it just zergs of troops smashing against the walls?" I know this question kinda jumps around a bit, but I want to emphasize the feel of an epic encounter of battle which you find in many Conan writings and lore. I think you are getting what I mean, will it feel like "woh! This is an epic battle upon our own walls!" and will quest have those epic feels to them when you have to "fight off this oncoming zerg". While this question can seem more of a bias opinion. I noticed you are an avid game player as myself so I take your response as that of a gamer and not a designer and how you feel these epic battles will feel like. Is there anything that you can say that would give me a bit better insight on how AOC is handling it?
Sorry for the long post, but very excited to see this game come to light.
*Edit* I was thinking on this a bit more so others will know what I am meaning in the wording "epic scale feel" , for instances, does the A.I. Actually hold units back and protect the seige units (if there are some) does it feel like I am playing against actual players? No A.I. can replicate the "unknown factor" of a player compaired to A.I. but when we are in these battles, can I look down from my wall and think.. "omg, we have a problem!".. and have my jaw drop? I think again as you are an avid game player as myself from many games like UO and the like, you know what I mean by this statment and hopfully what I am trying to ask here. thnx again for your reply if it is possible to answer.
"The monster created isn't by the company that makes the game, it's by the fans that make it something it never was"

I'll answer what I can in his place for the moment.
1.) Yes, several more
2.) Yes, yes, and probably.
3.) Yes
4.) Unknown. Disguises may be possible for some classes, and some races may be able to negotiate through some camps, but for the most part I suspect that bandits are simply bandits, more likely to kill and loot on sight than talk. This is all speculation I'm afraid.

Question to Athelan now
You once said the prestige class crafter won't be able to master all the craft types but only 2 or 3 is that still true?

2. in the raids. will there be more to the raids then simply killing bosses? will there be any storyline content to them? and other puzzles and riddles to solve?
3. is there any other way to make money other then crafting and blood money?
4. ive seen a few videos with camps and players fighting in them. Is there any way that you can talk your way through a peacefull passage?
one more question. Will the classes have profession systems or jobs that correspond to what class they are? This i mean is not to say what they do in combat but for example:
a barbarian or an assasin can be some sort of bounty hunter, or taking odd jobs to make money.
a guardian could become a soldier of his country and make money through his duties.
something like this.... or close?
There is going to be a plot line in the quests?, at least in the majority, or we will continue suffering quests infantile from the type: " you go to hunt 5 wolfs ", "brings to my village 15 claws of bears ". Since(as) minimum I hope that the quests are entertained.
Obviously the English is not my language, sorry.
Athelan,
As a gamer who just found this title a bit ago and loves everything so far I have read and many fans have been very informative, I do have a design question (sense that's what you do) about cities.
